this is a great mini documentary! i enjoyed it a lot. the way you told the story while standing in an old crofting settlement, first talking about life there and then about the clearances really made me feel unsettled. I could almost feel the horror of them being dragged out of their homes.

The problem I have is letting go of sentimental items. Things that belonged to loved ones who are no longer here.. people and pets. Its like a part of them is still with me as long as I have the item.

Thank you for a beautiful and sensitively done documentary about the clearances. I am a descendent of the MacLeod family from Culacnoc, Skye who were forced to leave their croft and emigrated to Australia under the 'assisted emigration scheme'. My Great grandmother was the first MacLeod in our family tree to be born here, whilst her father Red Rory (Roderick) travelled to Australia on the Araminta, in 1852, aged just 4 years old. What a harrowing journey it was on a terribly ill-eqipped ship with a cruel and incompetent ship doctor who held terrible attitudes towards Gaelic speaking immigrants. Rory came out with his siblings and his parents, Red Sandy (Alexander) and Mary MacLeod. Their youngest, baby Hugh passed away 3 days after arrival. Mary and Sandy were contracted to work for one of the largest farms, Waldie's run in Ballarat Victoria, just prior to the Gold Rush. Mary was a dairy woman and Sandy a Shepherd. They saved 100 pounds in one year and purchased land in what is called the 'Central Highlands' region of Victoria, and this place was named 'Glendaruel'. They later acquired land in the Talbot/Creswick area and there are many places given names after significant landmarks in Skye and the Highlands. I have beautiful photos of Rory and his daughter, Mary, my Great-grandmother. Thank you once again, for helping to fill in parts of their story so that they are not forgotten over time and over oceans.

I'm a Londoner with a cockney accent. It's really tiresome living in Scotland because everyone thinks you are the epitome of pure evil and responsible for all of Scotland's historical woes. Every week I have to deal with this ginger bearded nationalist in my local supermarket who gives me the stink-eye on the checkouts, from the moment I approach, until the moment I am in the car park. Scottish kids these days grow up watching Braveheart and think its a historical document. All the English did was pay off the corrupt Scottish lords. Thats it. Blame the English, hate the English, but all of the evil work was done by Scots. I think Scotland is a great nation with the potential for being a great independent nation. But this will only happen when it sheds its corruption. Exactly the same circumstance that existed then, exist now. Scotland is more corrupt than any third world nation, and most government money circulates between a few "favoured contractors" and the Scottish Parliament. Westminster is utterly corrupt, but since moving up here I realised that Scotland is so corrupt it makes Egypt look like a role model for fiscal responsibility.

Thank you for that interesting information. It appears that, though people were evicted, there were no new structures built, as it looks like wide open land among a few relic homes. Very sad.

Fantastic video, I hope you find your cottage in the countryside one day. It makes me appreciate what I have a wee cottage in NE Scotland. I love the peacefulness, the wildlife, I am trying to grow a woodland for future generations and leave as much of our garden to nature. Trying to grow veg in an old polytunnel that has been battered by storms. Keep following your dreams.

Thanky you for sharing your thoughts! Another idea to simplify life is take EVERY day some 20min to clean your rooms ...doorframes, all tabletops, hoovering, replace flowers etc. The toilet OF COURSE...EVERY DAY! This gives you more time on your days off...I know so many people spending hours of their weekend to clean up...this is STRESS! And don't forget to put a ritual for YOU on every day🌻 ...a nice cup of tea and a Walkers shortbread with chocolate and orange (product placement)😉Best greetings from northern Germany...you see, we have the same problems, you are NOT alone!✌

Beautiful video and great advice!! For myself, the most critical aspect of 'simple living' is a positive, questioning and focused mindset. An example of that would be....when deciding to purchase any item, I ask myself: 'Do I need or want this item? How will this item streamline/simplify my life? Is there a membership required? Is this a consumable or non-consumable item?' Also on the subject of stuff you already have: 'If you haven't used it in a year it needs to go. And, everything has a place....so when you use an item, clean up after yourself.' Those are just a few tools I use to live simply.

This immediately made me think of the Expulsion of the Acadians out of what is now Nova Scotia (New Scotland). Clearance, Expulsion, Ethnic Cleansing… different words with similar meanings and ending with the same devastating results. Thanks for posting.

One of my favourite slow cooking recipes is pumpkin coconut thai soup... you add each item slowly, one at a time & stir stir stir for about an hour, never letting it boil...
