I like the Ronstadt version better. Still, it’s amazing this wasn’t a much bigger hit. Most people don’t even know it exists.

Great tune. My mother had this but not this version, on a 78 with a blue label. No wonder Keith Emerson wanted to try his hand at it.

I knew it was too Motown sounding to be a Linda Ronstadt original and I thought I'd heard it before, back then. This is really a groovin' version. It's hard to beat an original, especially with a Warrick singing it.

There are a number of melodies associated with the Etz Chaim prayer. I personally favor the ageless version, but this is pretty too.

Tremendous. However, the orchestration in the Ronstat version is so beautiful it eclipses this version. But then, I heard LR's version first.

The part that you say is 'incorrectly sung' is one of the most minor modifications I've ever heard. I cant believe you're making a bit deal out of it! I think the way people sing it today sounds better actually. Music changes, especially congregational music as opposed to music for the concert hall. I highly doubt Tanchum cares. In fact, he actually himself sings the 'changed' or 'incorrect' way. There is a video of him with Eli Schwebbel in a restaurant singing the song, and he clearly sings it holding the A for three beats. So stop talking rubbish please.

Actually this is the “world premiere” of this song. But the composer and his friends presented it two or three years earlier at a Yeshiva University Chanukah party (where it took first prize). Later they ( and another two or three guys) recorded it on their Shivat Zion album.

Nobody in England has even heard of this woman, but every single one of them has heard of her sister. For my money that's the same old story, because the actual ability balance seems to be the other way around. In America, it seems like nobody's ever heard of the Swinging Blue Jeans version, which is the only one we know. I'm glad to say I never heard Linda Ronstadt or Van Halen do it, but I'm sure they would both do a ghastly job !"£$%^&*()_++_)(*&^%$£"! P.S. Thank you - as a frighteningly old man, I am able to get a serious buzz off seeing the labels of singles, and even the paper sleeves. .......

I don't know. I listened to the copy I borrowed to make this video, and it's not really CD quality; it's worn on one channel near the end of each side, probably due to having been played on an old VM record changer that used the lateral motion of the tone arm to trigger the changing mechanism. Those changers used to get stiff when the decades-old white grease would harden and cause this particular pattern of wear. I did run into Dr Shapiro at a family wedding this past November (he was the zaide of the other side), and he sat in on keyboards for one set, so he's still around and occasionally performing, and he's got his own channel (www.youtube.com/@rashishapiro ) which has the rest of the album. Maybe you could email him and see if he'll send you MP3s.

Sha1om. There are a couple issues with your statement that everyone should use this tune in the original. 1 when Tanchum wrote this tune he did not use Shem Hashem or even a substitute. So, how do you add words while maintaining the integrity of the niggun. That is a minor issue. The much bigger issue is that words are repeated throughout the original version. Most sholes minhag at least in most US Orthodox ones is not to repeat words this causes a need to make adjustments. I know for a fact that Tanchum had no problem with this. My father Cantor Sherwood Goffin took this beautiful tune from an obscure album and introduced it to NCSY in the late 70's and while singing it he would say now this is how to sing it in shule. This basically created the way at least here in the US that we sing it. If you ever meat Tanchum ask him what he thinks of what my father did to the song. I will give you a hint he thanked him profusely everytime we ran into him.
