I prefer Speyburn 18 than Glenfiddich 18 or Glenlivet 18 anytime. Good specs with 46% abv, NCF, natural colour. One if my favourite 18 year Scotch

As everything, it depends on price but I think the 15 is really delicious. It shows a balance of bourbon and sherry casks, by no means a sherry "bomb" but for me arguably better for that, but with plenty of delicious sherry-related aromas/flavours. Roy/Aqvavite is just one of many others who have reviewed it pretty favourable. Roy has observed some batch variation with recent releases he says are darker and more sherried than some earlier ones--but see also earlier comment (above) by @j.r.lalancette4588. I haven't tried the 10 so can't compare directly, sorry.

Yes, it's remarkably good and I con't find it too hard on the sherry or the pocket. I haven't had the Glenfarclas 18 but I prefer this to the current Glendronnach 18 and many other 18s. Old Pulteney 18 clips it for me, but not on price. Thanks guys enjoy it

I was most struck by the putty on the nose, which I had read about in sherried whiskies but not previously encountered. Long, even, linear finish. Excellent stuff, probably objectively better than the 15 but I prefer the 15 for its blend/balance of ex-bourbon and sherry-seasoned casks.

Just got and tried my trade sample from Inver House yesterday. It's a very precise whisky with a lot, but not OTT, sherry influence and clean. It's quite good indeed, but I could never understand what Speyburn's DNA really was because of the sherry overcoat. The latest batch of the 15 here in the UK has a lot less sherry than ever before (I suspect 20% sherry max) and it blew my mind how good it was. Where was Speyburn all along? My gosh the spirits is beautiful there with levels of barley sugars and grain, quince, bruised apple, even a whiff of something tropical akin to kiwi. Inver House has radically changed their blending in the past few years and their whiskies are getting more and more incredible as they go. Oh and get yourself a Balblair 15 if you have it on the shelf in NZ. It was my pick of the lineup in my trade samples.

I'm sure cognac distillates were added to it. There is a clear young cognac nose (not virgin oak, but grape distillate) right after pouring and the aftertaste of cheap young cognac finally convinced me.

I used to buy the regular old monk rum years ago, and it was $14 for a 750 ml bottle. It tasted like liquid butterscotch with a hint of old band instrument. I could see where the old band instrument flavor might throw people off but it reminds me of that one summer at band camp There’s a new big liquor store that opened up and has old monk rum; no one in town has sold it in years, but it’s $23 now. I saw the monk head Legend bottle and was curious, for $40. Sounds like it’s just liquid candy, so maybe spend the money on a mid tier bourbon, or a different bottle of rum

In the US there’s a brand called Military Special, it’s cheap bottom shelf liquor sold on army bases to privates who don’t know better. There’s a 3 year old blended scotch in that brand sold in plastic jugs, I think it might also be uncolored since it’s extremely pale. That stuff is truly horrible, I wouldn’t even use it as a cleaner.

Sounds good, Dave and Tim. On the prospects of 10yo NZ whiskies, it may perhaps depend on the angel's share. WhiskyJason recently addresses this topic. Whereas Scotland has an average loss rate of 2%p.a. for its malt whiskies in cask, Germany's is perhaps more than twice that at 5%. The result is that a 10yo German malt is perhaps in some senses comparable to a 25yo Scotch malt--see Jason's channel for the maths, but note that the loss itself is a compounding phenomenon rather than linear. It may be too soon to have reliable metrics, but *if* the loss rate in moderate climes like Auckland/Waikato is higher than Scotland's, then it may be that any age-stated whiskies from that region will likely remain in the single digits, yet drink (somewhat) like rather older Scottish malts.

Not too long ago, I had a full bottle of it, purchased in Spain in the early 70’s and hidden away in a junk locker, it was decent enough, light, no off notes, sweetish, better tasting than most modern average blends. Had no recollection of it at all.

Intriguing how a whisky can change over time! I've wondered about "old bottle" flavors and just what has gone on to change the liquid inside. It might be worth confirming the presence of dissolved plastics by running the remains, if there are any, some kind of chromatograph. If any chemistry profs are watching or if you have friends at a university or research center . . .It'S always a pleasure to watch your reviews -- thanks guys!
