jace falling apart in his mom's arm has been my favorite scene weirdly. as the queen, rhaenyra has her duties and as her son, jace also has his own duties. we see that at the beginning of the scene, he's reporting what happened to the tasks that his queen gave him. but then, we hear his voice break. then to see rhaenyra stand up ready to catch her son. a few seconds ago, it was a prince reporting to his queen. when his voice breaks, it's a son and mom grieving the death of luke 😭

The actual scene from the books is a lot more intense than this. It was a Sophie's choice situation but idk why the show dialed it down.

The creator actually elaborated about the decision to do so in an interview with TVLine I believe. Basicly there were to many kids to age up in season 1 to keep people on track so they cut one of the sons out of the show. And they felt like the importance of this moment is how it will shape Helaena going forward and that that part will still be true to the feeling of the book going forward. So I’ll guess we have to wait and see how the story develop to see if they managed to pull it off 😊

It’s not that he smiles it’s what he is evoking when he does the Homelander character. He smiles like a person who lost his mind a long time ago.
