So so helpful! I just started writing my first play about 6 months ago and I thought I was behind.

A friend recently called me to write a stage play for her; she's an actor. This was quite a challenge for me, as I only write screenplays for film. Nonetheless, I started researching and watching videos to get tips when I found you. I'm struggling a little bit with it, as the formatting is different, but that comes with the challenge! Thank you for your great tips. It's a good start for me.

Thanks Juel. Great tips. A good tip I've picked up is to always leave the written up scripts/notes at the theatre. Don't take them home with you every day only to leave them on the bus, or for you to be delayed on a show night and nobody knows what to do 🙂.

I am the queen of info dumps, but it's more like how neurodivergent people speak, and I have to fix it. I am a published writer, but I tend to write these big stories with lots of scenes. I need to write the play like I write my short stories. Not enough people write mini climaxes. Theater can work in ways movies can't because the characters can be more unlikeable because it looks different on a stage than on a big screen. Script writing is not the same as playwriting. I wrote and performed a monologue a long time ago, but I'd like to make a short one-act play for the fun of it.

I'm binge watching you videos from oldest to newest. Taking both mental notes, and physical notes. Your videos ARE SO CONCISE. I LOVE IT. I won't mention any names (except two) Kevin Lynch fills his videos with self-indulgent repulsive faces. I'm not sure if thinks this helps, or just enjoys it to much to care. And Musical Theatre Writer Guy, makes video about 4 times longer than necessary with self-indulgent asides, and expressions. Thank you for doing neither of those time-fillers and self indulgences. You are a beautiful lady, and you have a beautiful voice, Your content is very powerful and well presented. (I also love the work of Music Theater Theory).

Can you do more playwriting videos? Also, if writing a solo play - can this be done without breaking the fourth wall? Can it be interesting enough for the audience to observe the character on their journey? I can't find a single example of a solo play that doesn't directly address or engage the audience.

Yeah, this is super helpful for anyone working on a production to understand the Director's role... breaks - I second this. The pace of rehearsals is also something that is vital - some are direct on the fly rather than preparing every minute of rehearsal; both can feel ineffective - one is waste of people's time and the other allows no opportunity to rehearse or block with input from the the actors.

A lot of these tips can come naturally to a writer if they prioritize entertaining the audience and making something worth watching. I’m currently writing a musical and when starting I didn’t watched any tutorials and I never was conscious of these tips but I was using them because I wanted to write something that felt natural and that resembles some of my favorite musicals. It is great to be reminded and made conscious of these tips because they are the fundamentals of writing a good script, and it’s also a great way of checking your work too.

Thank you for sharing your tips and advice. I recently started script writing and every day is a school day. I’ve been writing narrative fiction for over ten years, so I’m having to learn things from scratch. Editing is something a writer can’t skip on, as there will be plot holes, typos and more errors on finishing that first draft. Some writers can be arrogant, thinking that their manuscript doesn’t need editing or proofreading. I can’t stress enough the importance of both. I’ll edit at least twice, proofread at least ten times. I think it helps improve my work as well as omit any errors. As writers we should be giving others our very best work.
