Fine countdown. In 1973 I was in the American Air Force on military duty at RAF Chicksands in Bedfordshire. I did my record buying in Bedford, Luton and Hitchin. I own just four out of your twenty lp's --Alice Cooper, Paul Simon, Elton John and Pink Floyd. If you'd like to know what a Yank would've bought in the UK, I have albums by Slade, Medicine Head, Moody Blues, Lindisfarne, Kiki Dee, Faces, Robin Trower, Rolling Stones (Goats Head Soup) plus reissues by Georgie Fame, Zombies, Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, Yardbirds, Searchers, Hollies and Unit 4 + 2 just to name a few.

Thanks for sharing your story David. It’s so important because when you first hear those words “You’ve got cancer” you tend to feel pretty isolated among other things. I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in2001. Turned out it was stage 4, so the choices I had were pretty limited. I went through all the feelings and emotions you went through. Obviously I’m still here thanks to luck, a great surgeon and tremendous support from my family and a few great friends. I’m very open to talking about it, and it certainly changed me as well. Stay well my friend. Glad you made the video.

Congratulations to highlight this silent problem and share your experience. All men on my both side family died with prostate cancers ,some very old in the 70s with only hormonothérapy but others like my father and his father more younger because it was too late to treat when they discovered it. All depends on your generalist doctor who can inform and detect you ,what was not the case with my father . Not easy to have just a good doctor, mine was very good but go on retreat and no substitute . I'm 66 and one or two times a year I do PSA tests as he told me and everytime I'm very anxious because I think the surgery would be particulary paintful in this part of body as I saw for my father. Only one time 6 years ago I had an alert I was 350 PSA and my doctor successed to treat me without surgery and 6 month after my PSA became normal with the help of my past doctor. Thanks for this very instructive video and having sharing your experience .

Hello David , thanks for posting this. Had radiotherapy over 20 sessions in autumn of 2021 when I was aged 60 and initially it was detected via a couple of PSA blood tests back in the latter part of 2020. Really enjoy your music posts so fair play for this one . Stay healthy and keep enjoying the music , it keeps us young at heart . 👍🏻

Congratulations on making the video and revealing your experience. The Vinyl community is full of men in the prime target area, so hopefully you will encourage them to be checked. Prostate surgery is not as invasive as it once was, now that Robotic surgery has increased. Again well done for making this video. Now back to the turntable please 😁

Great video and a very important one at that. My dad died of it so I was awhere of it big time. I had it checked out at 56 and and told I had it but it was very small so now I have it monitored every three months. However the important thing was it made my older brother get his Checked. So be proactive and get it checked and take control. Mentally I have parked this issue. Thanks David for this video tim x

Great video David. I'm 60 and have prostate issues at the moment, I have an enlarged prostate, I have my PSA tested every 4 months and it's normal ATM. I'm taking meds to shrink it and hopefully, they will work, but if they don't the specialist has said that they will probably take it out, my dad had the same thing at my age. Fantastic of you to highlight this silent killer, because most men don't have it checked until it's too late.

Sir David. Great vid. I have not to date (age 74) had any prostate issues...but I beat a cancer prognosis 10 years ago now (Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma ) and another heart speed bump with a need for 2 stents 3 years ago. I passed the link onto 2 friends who like you have been down the same route as you and the removal of your prostate. Your discussion of this is so beneficial for other requiring it or some form of treatment for prostate cancer (radiation etc.) or just stop them from delaying annual checkups. You may have just saved someone's life of even more than that. Well done!

Thanks for sharing your prostate experiences David. I’ve been enjoying your channel for a few months now and found this latest one particularly insightful as I have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I am 61 years old with a Gleeson 6 level and will be on ‘active surveillance’ going forward. So good news as it has been diagnosed early. I am particularly interested in your choice to have surgery. Were you a higher Gleeson score? I have been told most men die with prostate cancer rather than from it! Anyway it has encouraged me to take early retirement and will finish end of Dec. Looking forward to a long and healthy future.

I am very glad to hear you have survived this cancer and are with us to bring so much love and enjoyment of music. Every single time I have watched a video of yours I always say "we are brothers from a different mother" . A Canadian saying meaning our lives seem to parallel each other with experiences, likes, believe and music collecting similarities. I am 63 and am retired as you and right now at home recovering from Prostate Surgery as I too found earlier stages of cancer in my Prostate. My father had this Cancer but 25 yrs ago had less options to battle it. He lived till 88 so whatever was done must of worked. I chose removal and like you suffered with the Catheter and other discomforts but with the love of family, friends and God I am recovering fast and again to mirror your experience, I have been given the greenlight regarding any remaining infection in surrounding areas. I will be performing the twice yr PSA tests to monitor and my optimism is high that all will remain good. I eliminated all sugars and alcohol and most carbs from my diet which was needed to kill or slow cancer cell growth. regardless of my cancer , this was needed as my weight was getting too high. I now weigh 32lbs less but am working on regaining muscle weight which has been lost. Brian at Embryotic in Toronto has been my pen pal from the start as my journey through prostate cancer hell began and the VC has given me something of interest to watch as I recovered. Long rant and sorry for that but I had to write when I heard your story and am still amazed at how we two have so much in common. Good luck , all the best from Vancouver. Cheers Jonathan.

Once pete died it was never going to be the same. In a perfect world they would have split up after ocean rain. Leaving a beautiful legacy. Will obviously eternally great, but mcculloch is kind of a bloated remnant of his former self, voice destroyed by booze, fags, and coke. Surrounded by faceless session musicians. Yeah, this album was really really great.

Fantastic video David. You are great example of good decision-making around health decisions and a preventive approach. Very generous of you to share your story. Great video. V thoughtful and thorough. I'm a big Leonard Cohen fan but I'm not in the category where I idolise him. I do get the Goosebumps and tear responses though with his best stuff and love the simplicity of the arrangements. I think I agree on him coming into his own in the 80s onwards. Like Dylan, the tongue in cheek, ironic playful side of him and his lyrics are often missed by some earnest fans and critics. I personally don't find his songs depressing. Have you heard Sharon Robinson's Evernody knows album? Beautiful versions of his and their co-writtej songs. And I agree Alexandra leaving is a beautiful song. It's gets me every time!

Believe it or not the ramshacke Beefheart music wasnt random at all, he 'composed' every part on piano and made his musicians learn it all note for note. If you hear them do it live you gradually realise the arrangements are the same as on the records. 😅 Good list again David, I recently picked up that Flock of Seagulls.

Hi David An engaging run down of your favourite albums from 1983..Great that you managed to weave in a lot of your own personal history, that was interesting to hear. I have to disagree with you though and think Armed Forces was a great album, albeit very political and makes Costello cringe a bit now, but the short, snappy songs are great and memorable in imho. I have Trouble in Paradise, and it's OK.. I think Paul Simon is on that one?..agree with the unwelcome 80s sheen. I absolutely knew you would have Synchronicity as your top album, and it's probably up there for me too along with Murmur or The Violent Femmes debut as my own top choice. Enjoyable video. Rob.

An excellent cross section of albums . I totally agree with your viewpoint on your journals . I kept one on my first backpacking trip to Europe for 4 months in 1974 . And again in 1985 , when I took a year off to go traveling around the world . Every once in a while I'll read them , and it brings back wonderful memories from 50 years ago , and 39 years ago . They are indeed treasures , and I'm glad that you found yours . Here are some records that I loved in 1983 , although I haven't taken the time to put them in order : David Bowie : Lets' Dance Tears for Fears : The Hurting Pete Townshend : Scoop Stevie Ray Vaughan : Texas Flood Robert Palmer : Pride Graham Parker : The Real Macaw Mike Oldfield : Crises ZZ Top : Eliminator China Crisis : Working With Fire & Steel Yes : 90125 Bruce Cockburn : The Trouble With Normal Billy Idol : Rebel Yell Ian Anderson : Walk Into Light Roxy Music : High Road EP Bob Dylan : Infidels Police : Synchronicity Genesis : Three Sides Live Big Country : The Crossing The The : Soul Mining Peter Gabriel : Plays Live Thanks !

Nice list, but for me, Soul Mining by The The, 90125 by Yes, the Hurting by Tears for Fears and Points on a Curve by Wang Chung need to be somewhere in the top 20. Great that you rate Let’s Dance so highly. It is a great album of its time that gets overlooked because Bowie’s catalogue is so, so good. Power, Corruption and Lies-yes; Porcupine-yes; Cocteau Twins’ Head Over Heels-yes. Cheers!

Cheers Ash. I do like 'Soul Mining', but admit that I got on board with The The at 'Infected', and the earlier album was always competing with that album and the brilliant singles Matt put out during that period. As for 'The Hurting', I always considered that a pop album, and less worthy than the albums being put out around that time by The Cure and Depeche Mode. It kind of passed me by. As a band though, they matured beautifully from the next album onwards.

I’m a journal guy too, but like you there are gaps. Right now I could publish a novella of the first six weeks in Buffalo. 🤠 “Except to say that my infatuation with her outlived her infatuation with me”…We’ve all been there! When you mentioned your first year after university I could share some stories. Such a crazy time, but all good. Siouxsie’s Nocturne. I’m with you on Spandau Ballet. Speaking of university, I saw so many shows big and small. One was Marillion on the /89 tour for Seasons End introducing Steve Hogarth. It was in Ottawa at a club. Really good night out. “It’s incredibly derivative” 😂 Interesting comparison of REM and Jesus & Mary Chain. I’m with you on War. It’s terrific. I love Bono jokes though, if only there were more. Jason & The Scorchers are so fun. Totally with you on Absolutely Sweet Marie. Your Silent Face is another good choice. I have a CD copy of that album. That Brian Eno too! “Putting on the fancy jackets and going clubbing”….I would’ve been a great wing man David in the clubs with you. Can’t even imagine. 😅 I love Let’s Dance. Nice you mentioned the Metro connection with Criminal World. A New England by Billy Bragg is probably my favorite. Never tire of it. I have a CD copy of that Local Hero soundtrack. Such a great movie and soundtrack. Nice story from you on that record as well as many more as always around the music. Excellent finish with Synchronicity with the exception of Mother of course. So cool you as well that you saw that tour. ✌️

Howdy Mike. Ta for the comment, one with plenty of nuggets. I should probably start by confirming that future videos are unlikely to contain ancient journal entries (unless there are some truly daft ones that I can't resist sharing!), as there are no other women in my life who have influenced my musical taste. I believe this is probably consistent with other grey (or no) haired old blokes in the VC!! It'll be the same dumped versus being dumped experiences of each of us when in our twenties. 🙂 I must say regarding wing man status, in a game of percentages, me being your very own wing man would surely (with your gift of the gab) would have increased our win rate. 😇🤣 As for the music, I never saw Marillion, and I've always thought of their music warranting arena or stadium venues, not some dive club in Ottawa! Over the years, I've kept buying their albums, but still I'm not 'all-in'. Hogarth is a better singer than Fish, but I've never quite warmed to him. One day I'll tell you an embarrassing story (there's a few in my portfolio!) about their track 'No One Can'. Oh man, I've made some dumb moves. 😬

1983 was a killer year. I've decided to re-read my journals before I make any decisions to burn them. I have lists already made for every year, but I keep neglecting to make the videos.
