Hi my boots barely fit the crampon, bar adjusted on the last hole, is it going to be a problem for durability etc? Thanks in advance
@SnowAngelfishКүн бұрын
Personally i like to always use an ATC or fig8 for belay. Not really fond of body belay.
@DaveSearleКүн бұрын
Body belays are fast, require no equipment or a harness and can totally serve the purses of belaying someone onto a steep slope to check out the avalanche conditions.

I wonder if a different Prusik or a Klemheist would work better for backup-on-top? Maybe the built-in slippage to each of those would be a benefit in for rappelling?
@DaveSearleКүн бұрын
A lot of folks use vt prussiks in that configuration but I don’t personally carry one as they are slower to rig and don’t work as well on thin ropes.

Hi Dave! great video, very informative. Would there be any benefit on getting the Freerider 15 evo VS the Rider 13 evo; if my DIN is around 10 and can add the spacer? i guess im mostly asking because i can get the 13 significantly cheaper
@DaveSearle2 күн бұрын
Your din on alpine boots might be 10 but your release value on the raider it might be 12 or possibly 13…that might be a reason to go for the 15 but I would say that it sounds like the 13 is fine for you.

@@DaveSearle right. hadn't considered that. i am a rather beefy dude (186cm, 100kg) so i guess the extra cash is probably worth it. Thanks a lot for taking the time to give me your thoughts

Hi Dave, thank you very much for your explanations. I am really excited for this combination...Faction La Machine Massive and ATK Freeraider. What are your honest opinion about this Ski? For sure I am not a Pro like you but I am a good skier and looking for a big, light and playful ski for ski touring. Can you recommend the ski and what is your mounting position for the ATK binding on it? I am looking forward for your honest opinion! :) Flo
@DaveSearle2 күн бұрын
Hi Flo, I have so much fun on that ski I think it’s my favourite setup. The ski is a little tricky in icey bumps but who has fun in that anyway? It’s mega surfy and playful in the soft stuff and is great when things get tight. Ideal combo with the freeraider. Faction don’t pay me so I hope you can see this is my honest opinion

Awesome explanation. As i think of a lighter setup as my Agent 3 i was wondering what you think of the La Machine mini with a Raider 13 evo as a setup for Steep Terrain (colouirs)? Would this also work in harsher or hard conditions?

Could anybody give me advice on what insurance to get when skiing offpiste on the Alps?. I´ve heard of Air Glaciers but I believe they only cover the rescue part, not medical expenses not rehab if needed... I´ve also heard the common insurance companies do not cover offpiste terrain over certain altitude, most they do not cover it at all... Any clues?

is it sensible to lace up the stock liners? also i cant really figure out how to lace them up, with the dalbellos I have, there are only loops on the shin, so I suppose just got through these, but wouldnt it be a lot more sensible to have loops lower down to increase lockdown?
@jazzman_107 күн бұрын
Hi Dave, great video. I would like to ask if you use the same techiniques for belaying someone when you want to keep someone safe when crossing a risky traverse. You once started with ski mountaneering techniques using th erad line system but it would be nice to keep that series by teaching different ways of building an anchor, for example. Just giving you ideas... BTW, what happened to your Ronin skis? They seemed awesome but I do not see you skiing on them that often.

Hey Dave, awesome video and very interesting choice of skis! I find it interesting that you mostly ski 100 and above around the alps as I've found lots of European skiers like the 70 and 80 underfoot. Ever tried Black Diamond skis? I'd be interested in hearing your opinion about them

Super cool content. Appreciated seeing and learning about: A. The different diameter rap set up with explanation of which rope goes on each side of maillon. B. Carabiner Block to Carabiner Block transition between P1 and P2. C. Flaking the rope ahead of you All three things immediately made sense, but are not intuitive if you haven't seen it. Thank you for sharing!

Hey Dave, great video! Do you know the reason there are no interchangeable classic picks? The Sum'Tec would be great if you could add a classic pick to it for glacier travel, that way you'd only need one for a wide range of climbing

ever ski on a Shift 2? I've never tried ski touring, but aim to start this year. Not knowing if I like it or not, I'm tempted to throw a shift(2) on a Salomon Echo and give it a go. Figuring if I don't love it, at least I'll have a fun ski for the resort (not the most damp, I'm aware, nevertheless probably decent on powder days)

Bluewater VT prussic offers an alternative to the standard prussic, which can easily be released under load when tied in a Valdotain Tresse. Also gives you another backup rapel device as they won't melt when rapeled on. If rigging the prussic above the rapell device, this is the prussic I would choose.

Great video. 14:50 'Ice Climbing' Temres do a lovely longer rubber glove 282-02 ('outdoor work glove') with a cord for cinching the closure. Magic glove, just don't flock your nose with the side of the index finger or you end our like a Red nose reindeer :) Rubber has some aggregate in it for enhanced grip!

I've thought about it quite a bit ... for canyoning the rappels are often very messy with the descender dragging over the rock. I think this will be a lot harder to manage if the descender is further away. Lots of canyoners are using a third hand these days, but I don't think many are using an extension.

Jump turn practice!. There are lots of subtleties to this type of turn. The timing of the unweighting of the downhill skill. Getting the pole out of the way. The gradual application of the edge angle to avoid a judder. The easiest way to practice this skill is on a short and easily accessible slope that you can easily side step back up to practice over and over again. Trying it on a hard snow slope (or piste) is best. Start without a bag on then build up the weight to a normal sized ski mountaineering bag, notice how the extra weight changes things. Starting with a slight stem can make the manoeuvre a lot easier when learning but it’s got to aim to not have to do that. A light ski setup will help but you can do this style of turn on any ski as long as you have consistent sharp edges. Find yourself out on the mountain with 15 mins to kill? Get a bunch of these done to practice and you’ll feel a lot more comfortable in the steeps! #steepskiing
