After a long, hard day of researching the Vane and Russell families, which led me to Lewisham, I found myself working on the Gawens of Blackheath and Greenwich. James Gawen (1791-1867) was, in the 1830s and 1840s an "Irish provision merchant" Shadwell. Meaning, I think, that he sold imported Irish food. Very niche. His parents, I eventually discovered, James Gawen and Jane Starkey were married on 18 January 1784 at...St Margaret's church, Lee. So I sat down on the sofa for a rest, turned on KZbin, and what should Google/KZbin present me with but this video. And you were kind enough to show me the site of the church where that marriage took place. I don't have Adelaide Law, née Vane, in the tree - yet...

I spend a lot of time working though scans of parish registers in the course of putting together family histories of the great, good, infamous and forgotten. Lots of them lived in London and it's been great to discover how many of them were baptised and married in those "Fifty" Churches. And buried in their various burial grounds (not necessarily attached to the churches). You're quite right about St George, Bloomsbury, and St George the Martyr, Queens Square, Holborn, being confusing. For your next expedition, I suggest exploring those burial grounds, opened *before* the Metropolitan Interment Act, 1850, starting with St George, Hanover Square, in the Bayswater Road. and the bucolic delights of the same parish's cemetery in Hanwell. I'd also feel a bit less anxious if you weren't whizzing down all those inner London streets!

I subbed to your channel after watching the Rotherhithe change ringing😅, yes im a change ringer and change ringing has really nothing to do with church worship although the use of bells was to used to call people to prayer the history of change ringing really started at the beginning of the 17th century. I believe in a God or a divine creator, but let's separate this from religious dogma. For me I see that energy is eternal, energy can be transformed into matter, and you can't create or destroy energy . I suppose my view is God is a conscious source of energy. Anyway nufv of that. What amazes me is human talent and genius, as you said look a5 Churches, also look at Mosques, they are beautiful. Music is amazing and it can and does affect our emotions. Just listen to Hydens Serande and you will be transcended I feel.
@hereticatious
@hereticatious 4 күн бұрын
Thanks for the sub - it really helps to build the channel. The plan has always been to explore mosques, temples, synagogues and any other form of sacred space. However it has proved much more difficult to get in and film places outside the Christian traditions. If anyone reading this can help...? Have camera, will travel!

The back 6 bells were cast by Thomas Lester in 1748. Two lighter bells were added and cast by Tayors bell foundry of Loughborough in 1996. The tenor bell weighs 10 cwt 2 quarters 5lbs, which is 536kg.

@hereticatious bery true indeed. Bell ringing is bery therapeutic mentally as it is about following graphical patterns to get different sequences. So basically whilst all the bells start in order 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 the bells change position. There are a few simple rules A bell can change position or stay in the same position. A bell can only swap one position at a time with the bell before it or the bell following it. The number or sequences is the factorial of the number of bells . So 2 bells only two positions when you get to 8 bells it is 40320 when you get to 12. Bells it is 479001600. You can ring a bell of 5040 changes in anywhere between 2hr 30 and 4 hours 30 on a heavy peal of bells . It you tried to ring every sequence on 12 bells it would take 9ver 30 years without ever stopping.

8:48 the flying serpents are from Herodotus famous work The Histories. He reported that flying snakes lived in the Arabian and Sinai deserts - the same desert where Moses was exiled. You are right that they are just like the dragon myths because they are based on ancient peoples discovery of fossilised dinosaur and giant snake bones. I don’t know for certain but I also can’t imagine the early Margaret St clergy were unfamiliar with Ancient Greek literature and the flying servants are generally a very well known image - probably the most famous of the Histories apart from maybe the chariot driving sheep and the gold digging ants of India

What a serene Church! It is amazing that William Wordell and A.W.N. Pugin were very young "self-taught" architects who had the gusto and knack on how to get things built, (especially Pugin who designed St. Stephen's Tower, the finale of the Palace of Westminster, I think from basically his deathbed after his mental breakdown in his late 30s. It is interesting that the most famous landmark building in UK came about that way). Father North sounded like a great priest who needs to be remembered. I hope to visit one day. I hope it is still a strong and energetic parish. England is still filled with many Holy People in all walks of life, old and young, and future saints. The Holy House shrine of Mary the Virgin up in Walsingham, Norwich, was one of the most venerable pilgrimage sites in Europe. It was founded around 1096 by an Anglo-Saxon nobleman's widow, St. Richelsis, after receiving visions from Mary to build a replica of the house of her parents where she received the Annunciation. It was visited by many English kings and queens. It was then torn down on orders of King Henry VIII and the Iconic statue of Mary and Christ Child was dragged to London and desecrated. Our local parish church in La Jolla, California built in 1916 is also shares the same name; St. Mary Star of the Sea. It too, albeit smaller in scale and in Spanish Mission Revival style, is also quaint and serene on the inside as well. Great video and a wonderful and knowledgeable tour by Father Robinson.

God preserve us from 'flexible seating'! Pews are so much more dignified than untidy chairs. So many churches have been spoilt by their removal and to say they aren't original is a red herring, they are a lot more appropriate to the architecture than chairs. And the orange ones are just hideous.
