Thank you for the informative video. In this situation, wold you recommend to attach bridle lines or snubber to take off the load from the anchor chain? Would you do anything different, if the boat is a catamaran?
@epicnavigator
@epicnavigator 7 күн бұрын
I always use the anchor bridle. For the catamaran I place more long lines ashore to secure every possible wind direction
@epicnavigator

For the catamaran I do not place the bridle though, I just take the load out of the windlass with a short line using snubber or rolling hitch

What kind of knot you would normally do on the chain? And would you do it over the chain or pass one of the ends through one of the links?

We do clove hitch or even better rolling Hitch. Passing through the links is causing the line to brake due to the friction

great explanation but few things you should not teach people by doing. never ever set your foot off the boat especially if alone especially if it is bigger than 15-20foot. show people how to throw the line on a bollard ( take a roll in two halves and throw up and outward with 2 hands - distance you can manage is at least a half boatlength) if it is a ring, you buy s special hook that can thread rope througha ring. never ever get off a 20 ton boat. no jumping nothing please! also a wireless remote for your anchor and bow theuster comes very handy when docking in greece in crosswind
@epicnavigator
@epicnavigator 10 күн бұрын
I really disagree with the "never ever" approach. You do whatever is best for the specific action and conditions you have and, I can tell you for sure that in that case, that step out of the boat gave me much more comfort and confidence that the line will be fixed successfully. About throwing the line I agree and I already mentioned to another comment that is great technique, nevertheless I personally feel more confident with the bowline and step out. The hook 🪝 is of course a must have to all boats, especially the single hand. I really appreciate comments like that and that's why I give some extra attention, because it's obvious you have a lot of experience, but the "never ever" approach is something I generally avoid saying and applying because it is almost always keeping you back. Thank you
@tamast1423
@tamast1423 10 күн бұрын
sure your approach seems more practical but the never ever is driven by my simple safety mindset=zero accidents. you simply try to avoid a danger situation if there is a safer working alternative. you don’t jump from a 20 ton boat especially if it is close to a wall, another boat and the prop might be engaged. it is easy to believe that it does not happen to you but if it does it’s either fatal or serious injury or material damage. so get comfortable throwing when possible. yes there are situations when it is unavoidable but it’s your choice to risk those or not certainly. so where is the size limit where you also say never ever? 100feet? 400 feet? 1500 feet. cruise ship?

I am a 57 year old professional, I have been on boats and the sea waters for as long as I can remember. I have had a professional career in the yachting sector for more than 20 years. In my opinion, in such places, the port authority should definitely make an arrangement and have professional personnel at the entrances and exits, the maneuvers should be done by professional personnel and the boat crew should pay for this service. Such an arrangement will be beneficial to both the local workforce, safer for the boats in the port and the approaching boats, and will prevent major accidents and damages and most importantly, prevent people from getting injured. Insurance companies, charter companies, private boat owners and port authorities will primarily benefit from such a situation. It will be a win-win situation for everyone.

Thank you for the video. Question: Would it be a valid action to arrive next to the catamaran and then ask one crew member to use a spring line from your mid cleat to the cat's mid cleat (held by hand to allow movement) until you sort the stern lines? The cat owner was on deck, could been asked if he agrees... Is this accepted, is it done usually, or it is not liked by the other boats captains in general?

You optimized the position of your boat and your anchor is still on the seabed but on the wrong position? You do not expect crossing anchor-chains with the following vessels? 🤔 Regards
@epicnavigator
@epicnavigator 14 күн бұрын
You are correct. For that specific position I had the anchor a bit off center but because of the very limited area 1) all the boats drop off center to achieve more chain in the water, hence better scop and 2) I stayed only 30 minutes so I didn't care a lot about the alignment. The same technique though is used for Repositioning the boat to achieve the proper position

Nice instructive summary, in the last sequence the lazy line appears to be far away to starboard so it’s not likely that it got into the bowthuster. The mooring could have been saved if the aft windward mooring had been properly managed. In these strong wind conditions, why not moore along the quay?
@epicnavigator
@epicnavigator 16 күн бұрын
Usually the slots with lazy lines and mooring lines are problematic for alongside since the wash from the propeller pushes the lines parallel with the dock and the get tangle with each other or with the rocks and blocks underwater. Sometimes they can even get to the propeller and the are causing big Drama that need diver to fix. I have to say that the Captain here was a few seconds away from success but he got overwhelmed from the lack of preparation and the inexperienced crew and he let the boat end up to the ugly position. He has the skills and the knowledge but he was on a bad day obviously...

Can I ask why in Greece most people prefer to use cleet hitch rather than XOX? Also, do you consider it a mistake to have bowline on the bottom part of the cleet and then tie a hitch with the part of the rope that gets thrown back to you?
@epicnavigator

Cleat hitch works better for the way of docking we use in Greece. Slip lines, med Mooring etc. About the bowling at the cleat I see only trouble and no benefits when you do it, so for me is 100% wrong

The fundamental problem is in training and experience. When you learn to sail a sailboat, sails are in focus. Unfortunately very few learn how to manuever using a motor. Clearly shown in the movie, where wrong rudder position pushes the stern into the neighbors, rather than away. This is not the right place for advice in this respect. Study books on single screw manuevering (motor boats), and go test it out.

I always try to be polite with everyone because it is encouraging people to comment so other people get the information they need but there are moments that I cannot really accept this kind of toxicity and misguiding. You came, you watched the video, you comment, you say that people should not get information from the video (exactly what you did) and you encouraging them to read books about maneuvers and then go and test them. Tell me now what should I think about you?

Why go in stern first when there's all that empty quayside available? Why not put her alongside facing into wind. Secure stern and let go forward. Shove bow off or give a touch astern on a stern spring. Allow wind to blow bow into position. Have two watches. Have one watch & competent watch leader looking after bow and other watch and competent watch leader looking after stern, all crew wearing life jackets. Forward watch members lined ahead of foremast when not required. Stern watch members sitting in cockpit when not required. Have required amount of anchor chain flaked ready if it can be done safely. Have loop in a long bow line ready to drop onto chosen bollard, the remainder eight-flaked ready. Have competed person, skipper if necessary, controlling wheel and power. Have an escape plan ready for each stage of the operation. Approach upwind end of quay at about 45 degrees initially. Drop loop over bollard and control line using a turn round a cleat. Allow wind to blow vessel alongside. Once vessel secure alongside. Put party ashore, using additional lines if necessary, to allow wind to move vessel along quay until stern is in the correct position.. Move any spare fenders to protect the stern, Move unnecessary crew well away from anchor chain and have anchor hanging a-cockbill. Bring back 8-flaked bow line clear of anchor area and controlled by forward watch. Ease bow line and let wind take her bow out. forward watch controls the rate. Lower anchor in the required position. Shuffle anchor forward and tidy up as necessary.

Easy to say but extremely hard to execute this plan. Not all sailors have experience, not all crew is skilled, they all have right to sail and the right to mistakes. I hope I didn't get the wrong message here but finally the Captain did great job to keep vessel and crew safe and he learn a lot for the next time.

Very nice! Thanks for the video. What I struggle most with is estimating the correct distance to drop the anchor. One thing I would add as a word of caution: when you step onto the pier with the engine at 1/2 reverse, there is a risk to fall in the water and get sucked into the propeller. I think I‘d stay on the boat and either throw the line over the pollard or get someone on the land to help me. Putting it into neutral and then quickly jumping off might also be risky - with strong wind or a short line, it might get pulled out of your hand and swing away.
