Two years ago, when the Roma (Gypsy) Taxi driver in Bucharest to my amazement almost understood my conversation with my wife in the native tongue of Rajasthan, a north western state in India, I decided to spend time on this and find out how. According to records, Roma left north west Indian around 1050. From no other part of India did Roma leave. They were the tired soldiers of the army of great Rajput King Prithviraj Chauhan who fought 17 wars with Mohammed Ghauri. Most Roma belong to fine Rajput warrior caste and others were farmers called Jat who also were in the army. While the great king was keen on continuing battles, many soldiers did not want to fight more wars and stayed at home. For a Rajput staying at home during war was a stigma. Even women folk taunted them for staying home at the time of battles. Therefore, they left their native land in groups. Some went west and are called Gypsies or Roma now and some went down to south India where they still are in their red and yellow colour clothes and huge moustache. You can know about them on Google by clicking "Lambada in south India". I was further shocked again when our Gypsy (Lambada) maid understood a Hungarian Roma lady talking in Romani on BBC program on TV while I read the English captions. Apparently the two ladies 9000 miles away spoke similar tongues prevailant about 1000 years ago at their place or origin. On the way to west, Roma took words from Persian like bibi and many from other tongues including Greek (drost for road) and Armenian. Also, few joined them on the way from Sindh, another Indian province. They are still called Sinti within Roma and words like laklo, lakli, chavo are from Sindhi. They somehow lost their last names of fine Rajput warrior clans. Roma may try to find surnames like Sisodia, Chauhan, Shekhawat, Nainavat Rathore, etc. But they kept first Indian names until 18th century like Amos Bihari and his daughter Panna Cinka of Hungary, both great musicians, Panna and Bihari being Indian first names. Why would Europeans take Indian names in 1764 if they were not from India? You may look for " Roma Musician Panna Cinka and her father Amos Bihari on Google. Today Roma use many of the words from Rajasthani, Hindi and of Sanskrit origin. Few are ek do trin yak nak bal angusth bersh diwas sassu sussro saalo Sali chora chori cior(chor) gia sov kammes thalle upral purano maal dukh, kasht, tato, langhal(lame) maang, des, lajja and so on. I know hundreds. There are thousands. Sometimes grammar has changed as per European style . Like we would say sov gia and Roma would say gia sov. Same meaning though. Has slept. Romani words are from pre-Muslim era in India and hence pure Sanskrit like hiv(him in Sanskrit) for snow or ice is used not barf as we use today. Please go to the following in KZbin to see more. “Romani an Indo Aryan Language” by Adriano, an Italian Roma and also “Roma girl from Kosovo finds her roots in India” All Roma had moustache which was necessary for Rajput warriors. Purity codes of Roma were till recently practiced in India like a lady not entering the kitchen during few days of the month and Roma breaking the plate if animal licks it. My mother used to give the plates to beggars if our dog ever licked it even once. That is why death rate within Roma during great European plague was so low as claimed by experts. Roma had also carried our proverbs like "while choosing a daughter in law, believe your ears more than eyes” meaning reputation of the girl's family was more important than her beauty. Would native Europeans choose a daughter in law? Another proverb is "If the road is crooked, you can't walk straight." Roma eventually lost their religion, quite understandably but Sara kali of southern France is Rajput deity of Goddess kali. The deity is immersed in water body every year like we do in India. The Vatican has not recognised this deity as it has no link to Christianity. Please see on KZbin "Dr. Ian Hancock: Keynote Address at Romani Studies Conference, UC Berkeley" who makes very scholastic analysis of Romani history. He gives authentic details of entire history and how Europeans first found in 18th century that Romani was an Indo Aryan language when some European students went to India. Many Roma have come to Delhi and Jaipur to get their DNA tested and were doubly assured of their Rajasthan roots. Also, one may see on KZbin " Kalbelia Dance" of Rajasthan which is same as Flamingo dance of the Roma. Even the dress of the dancers are same. As a student in the US during seventies, I saw some slightly brown students speaking language somewhat familiar to me. They said they were new Roma migrants to the US from Spain but I did not know about Roma at that time. I have received many mails stating Roma were Doms and untouchables from India and so on. This may not be so. First, there are no Doms in Rajasthan. Second, Roma who came to south have mostly Rajput surnames and very few Bhil (a jungle tribe, but soldiers too) surnames. Third, down trodden and timid would not venture leaving home to travel thousands of miles and fourth, Doms are very dark even for Indian standards while Roma are not. There should be no doubt that Roma are our lost pral and Pena (We would say pra and behna) Hats off to them to keep the language and culture alive even after 50 generations while humanity in the entire world now melts away in two generations. I am in contact with many European Roma from whom I gather some new facts time to time. I have gathered the above information till now from history of Rajasthan, originally known as Rajputana. Communism under Xoxha took a lot out of Albania. But with social media and a young, invigorated group seeking to achieve education and the freedom to pursue a meaningful life. My father - now 96 - left Albania to study medicine at the University of Graz in Austria just before Albania became Communist. If he came home to Tirane, he'd never be able to leave to go back to school in Graz. He eventually made his way to America with other Albanians similarly situated, met my first generation American mother, got married, and raised me and my sister. In 2009, my father, my mother, and I traveled to Albania for the first time as a family. My sister could not travel with us this time. It was a great experience visiting Albania (Tirane and Berat). Tirane was very cosmopolitan with a wonderful restaurant and shopping district. I think Albania has an opportunity, if it so chooses, to build up both is coastline and mountains for a summer/winter vacation spot. Geographically, It's prime real estate. You have the Mediterranean coast AND the mountains for skiing (it's certainly not good for growing). Albanians are also know for our incredible hospitality. I would love to see these young people given a chance to move Albania in the right direction will all their energy and enthusiasm which they bring to the table. They should get their chance.
