I find the easiest way to measure fill is get a tiny jeweler's scale. measure it when it is dry in grams, fill it and put it back on the scale to see what it took up. You can easily extrapolate ml from that.

Hello!, friend 'Parker51', it is a good job, very well explained, and understandable, I have seen some other videos on restoration and repair of different fountain pens, but none of them mention where or who sells the new parts, for old pens, Would you be so kind as to inform me, where or who sells them?, especially for Sheaffer fountain pens, by the way, I am in Zapopan, Mexico and I thank you in advance for your attention and I congratulate you for your videos, greetings friend Parker51 and thank you.

Thank you so much for this video. I am also in the process of restoring a father in law's desk pen, this model, apparently. In the kit that I got for this, there is also a spring, but it does not appear to fit inside the barrel. I didn't see a spring in your restoration. Do the desk pens not use a spring as the regular snorkles do?

That is for the PFM model snorkel, I have not seen any other snorkels that use a spring

Any ideas on how to access the inner cap of a Parker Sonnet pen to fix it? I have a loose cap and learnt that if the inner cap can be removed it can be fixed. Is there an inner cap that comes out in these pens? Cheers.

Is there a reason you use the shellac as opposed to a gel type glue for the sac and threads? Is it just preference?
@Parker51Guy Жыл бұрын
Shellac will soften with the use of heat from a hair dryer or heat gun etc, so you can take apart the pieces later, whereas glues normally are not a reversible proposition and trying to take apart pieces without breaking them is nearly impossible. Also shellac on a sac will not come loose from the water present in ink and will therefore stay attached to the sac nipple.

I have the Pilot Custom in amber, I wish I had gone with a F nib instead of the M I chose, besides that it’s a great pen with a unique filler in this day with a huge ink capacity. I can’t think of any specific things to guide you in your choice of a restoration purchase, but if you have any questions when you get it about getting it back in shape I’ll try my best to help if you post again. I hope you are still doing this, I’m looking for parts for a button filler. Where can I get supplies?
@Parker51Guy Жыл бұрын
Be very specific what type of filler you want. A button filler is what would be on most old Duofolds, this actuates a pressure bar to depress a rubber sac in the barrel for an ink reservoir. Fillers like this pen are Vacumatic fillers, and I point this out because you’re using a term not related to the pen in this video. Which are you referring to? For a button filler, you might try Anderson Pens, they sell the bars, but not the actual buttons under the blind cap.

If one was to try to polish their cap jewel, what would they use? Is it a real jewel, or like a glass material?
@Parker51Guy2 жыл бұрын
The cap jewels are actually some type of plastic. I don’t know if it’s celluloid or Lucite but at any rate, it will definitely only require the use of either a jewelers cloth or if you want a high luster, you could use plastic polishing compound. I use Simichrome for my pen polishing. But there are other brands.

I would not use the vac lube, actually talc powder (pure, non-perfumed) is what most use, but I don’t have that so I use powdered graphite.

Pelikan M1000 EF is THE perfect pen. Several reasons. First, it's a fine (or extrafine) writing pen that's very smooth, with ample ink flow. Next, the nib is flexible, producing a 3x wide line with some (but not excessive) pressure. It becomes quite wet then and does not railroad. There's no skipping or start-up problem, it just works. The ink capacity is generous and the piston mechanism super smooth. Absolutely flawless. My Montblancs can't compare on reliability (start-up, inky fingers), nor can my Sailor KOP. My Sailor Professional comes close in writing quality, but does not have the size, nor presence, nor the convenient piston mechanism. Pelikan M800 is also a fine pen, slightly smaller and more portable--will need to get one with an EF nib eventually. M800 nibs are less flexible than the one on the M1000. Oh yes, and the M1000 EF writes in reverse just as well as not reversed, only with an about 40% narrower line.

Thank you for your excellent collection of helpful videos. After overhaul and testing fill functionality, it's sometimes necessary to ensure the pen performs and writes pleasantly. I like simple black Quink for a 'nib performance check'. We might then face correction of tine alignment, flow optimisation and doing what it takes to ensure a smooth, enjoyable line in whatever direction the nib moves... another satisfying area of pen tuning that enthusiasts can now more easily self-learn :-)

Thanks for the video! I'm a collector and if you collect, and have some mechanical ability, you eventually find yourself becoming a repairer because experienced repairers are rare in Sydney where I live. I've restored all my six Parker "51" Vacumatics (and many Aerometrics). I had to buy the special Vacumatic block tool that unscrews the Vac pump (placing a new diaphragm onto the old pump can be even more of a pain, especially as a learner). I own only one of these Parker Vacumatics and the time has come (after 6 years or so) to replace the diaphragm but my problem is removing that tightly bound section without damaging the pen in any way--the "51" hoods seem so much easier to remove, without significant heating... so I would have really liked to see exactly how you used the hair dryer (even if you muted the sound) cause that is my fear--ruining the pen with too much heat... Thank you anyway as the information remains very helpful :-)

Yes actually! I was just able to fit a pilot falcon converter on my Sheaffer Touchdown Feathertouch( I think that's what it is ). The inner diameter of the converter snugly fits over the nipple/post the sac is attached to. And the length of the pilot converter can be trimmed down slightly to fit if needed. Looks like mine won't need that though. I'm pretty sure there would be other converters that would fit as well. I'm going to attach mine with a little shellac although it fits snugly enough to where I may not need to do that.

Has anyone ever mentioned to you that graphite has a potential to cause corrosion in aluminum? I'm not sure if it would apply in the case of Vacumatic fill units but I wouldn't risk it. So you drilled out the pellet from the pellet cup and you replaced the diaphragm without replacing the pellet? If you don't need a new pellet why was it installed in the first place? What is "that little guy"? Is it a screw? Where did it come from? I thought the pellet cup only contained a rubber pellet. Why are you calling your modified chopstick a "pellet pusher"? Didn't you already destroy the pellet when you drilled it out? Was there a second pellet? Where did it come from? Where did you put it? I think you missed a whole lot of steps which should have preceded your inserting the tip of the ink sac/diaphragm into the little black cup. Could you please fill those steps in?
@Parker51Guy5 жыл бұрын
theinkbrain There is a small plastic BB-like pellet cemented into the end of the diaphragms from the manufacturer. When the old sacs deteriorate that old pellet usually sticks in the pellet cup on the filler upon removal because the pellet end rips away from the rest of the diaphragm. The chopstick tip fits into the tight space of the diaphragm tip against the pellet and gives purchase to push the tip into the cup where it will stick in place once the rubber is no longer stretched thin when the tension is released. Essentially if you follow these steps using the parts that are manufactured for replacement there are no steps that I have left out, the sac is ready for replacement as is except for cutting to proper length, which I detail. Thanks for the questions and I hope this clears up your confusion.
@theinkbrain5 жыл бұрын
@@Parker51Guy I think I am pretty close to knowing what I need to actually change the diaphragm. I don't have any of your special equipment, but I had an old plastic Gold Grip brand pair of plastic pliers with rubber grips, and I used them and a wooden chopstick to successfully remove the diaphragm/pump mechanism. I had a pair of tweezers with very sharp right-angled tines which I used to remove the pellets. The pellet in one pen was rubber and the other one was hard plastic. I discovered that my old Vacuumatic which I have had for some decades and which I had used like an eye-dropper has a working pump, so I am not going to mess with it. I had fixed it up with a spare (not Parker) feed and a Dauer Feder nib and even though it might be what I have heard called a "Frankenpen" it looks beautiful it works beautifully. This was long before I knew anything about Vacuumatics. I had an old metal cap with a lovely grey jewel and a gold, blue diamond clip. Last night I finally got the jewel out and now its on the pen I recently bought which was missing a clip. I kept the metal cap upside down for several days in a shot glass with a few drops of WD 40 and then kept it on my bathroom sink with a long pair of tweezers inside it and turned to hair dryer on it every few days. Last night the clip loosened enough to rotate. I used a piece of brown parcel tape stuck on a piece of cardboard from a pack of sour-patch candy to work the jewel and wonder of wonders it came loose. So now I know this is a technique that will work harmlessly on metal caps. I am thinking that if the seal between the barrel and section can be made to not leak that these old Vacuumatics can be used as eye droppers regardless of whether the pump and diaphragm are not working. That's how I used my old and still beautifully serviceable pen. I polished it to a high gloss with a soft cotton rag and notepaper and shined it up with just my fingers. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Now I know where I can come for very good and very useful information from an experienced Vacuumatic man.

Thank you - that was very helpful. I have my great-grandfather's Duofold Jr. and was never brave enough to take it apart and clean it, but after watching your video, I did it successfully. The only thing different was that there is no internal ring for the pressure bar to catch on - I needed to first screw on the nib with the sac, and then insert the pressure bar, which then rests against the shoulder of the nib holder on the inside. Couldn't or wouldn't have done it before this video
