Hey what's going on guys, Just found your channel. Hey man, Are you from San Diego. I'm from Taylorsville next door to Hickory, I lived in Hickory my Junior and Senior year. Once I graduated in joined Military Navy to be exact. I've been in San Diego for 24 years now. Got here when I was 19 now 44. San Diego use to be amazing back in the early 2000's. To expensive to many people now. I love California so much though. I was thinking about moving to the Inland Empire, Riverside Hemet Murrieta etc cause it's way cheaper so I could at least stay in Cali. Hickory has changed so much, Grown alot, I've been on Zillow looking at renting and owning. OMG so much more for your dollar, I really miss the season, Like Fall and winter even the rain, Because it does rain back there. I just don't know what I'm going to do. All my family is back in NC, Haven't been back in over 6 years since my mom passed back in 2018 from cancer. I have a felling marriage whom I been with for 10 years. Don't think we are going to make it to much longer. I can't make it out here by myself with out doing the roomate thing. Not my cup of tea. Alot of people do that out here. Or familys live together. Glad I found your channel. New subscriber.

Hey man, thanks for sharing your story and for subscribing to the channel! Sounds like you’ve been on quite the journey. Hickory has definitely grown and changed a lot, and you’re right-you really do get so much more for your dollar out here compared to California! I can imagine it’s a tough decision, especially with family back in NC and all the memories tied to it. Sorry to hear about your mom and everything you’re going through - I can relate. If you’re seriously considering moving back or even just exploring options, feel free to reach out. We’d love to help with anything-renting, owning, or just navigating the whole process. Hang in there, man, and we’re glad to have you as part of the community! 💪 Keep us posted!

So both of you appear to be health conscious, just curious. What grocery stores and restaurants do you shop and eat at in the Catawba County Hickory area? My wife and I normally have to drive to Morganton, Mooresville or even Asheville or Winston for this. Such as Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Harris Teeter etc. Publics is ok but the quality and price can’t match the others. Just curious what you opinions are on this issue. What are your clients telling you? I feel this a big void in our area but don’t understand why with the current growth. You opinion is appreciated. Thanks G Little

Hi @kellylittle7780, thanks for your question! We completely understand the desire for more grocery options in the Hickory area. Lowe’s Foods is great for everyday shopping, and we do stop by Publix sometimes too. Anytime we’re near a Trader Joe’s, we stock up-so you’re not alone in wishing we had one here! Hickory residents have been vocal about wanting Trader Joe’s, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see one pop up soon with all the growth happening. We also love supporting local. The farmers market offers fantastic local produce, and there are some great plant-based options in downtown Hickory, like Plant-Based Bossfor when we eat out. It’s true that nearby cities like Asheville and Charlotte have more variety, but Hickory is definitely on the rise, and we’re hopeful for more choices to come. Our clients share similar sentiments, but many are excited about Hickory’s expanding options. Hopefully, we’ll see even more as the community continues to grow! Thanks for reaching out, and let us know if you have any other questions!

Culturally Hickory has more going on than some much bigger places. It is a regional medical center for the northwest corner of North Carolina. Restaurants and shopping were abundant when I lived there. Charlotte is not that far away, and you can get there by freeways. The mountains are handy, especially the ski areas. Asheville is not a bad drive on I-40.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We couldn’t agree more-Hickory really does have so much to offer for its size. From being a regional medical hub to having a fantastic selection of restaurants and shopping, it’s a hidden gem for sure! And you’re right, the convenience of Charlotte, the mountains, and Asheville being just a short drive away really adds to the appeal. We love hearing from folks who’ve lived here and appreciate everything this area has going on! Feel free to share any favorite spots or memories-you never know who might be inspired to check them out! 🌄🍽

We have lived in Austin Texas since 1996 and the growth (as everyone knows) has been massive for years and years. The cost of living here has also grown to the point where living here is not easy for young people trying to start their lives as adults. It has also become a place that is not attractive for many retirees. We will be coming to visit Hickory in the near future to see if it is a practical choice for retirement.

I moved to Hickory about 3 years ago from NJ. I left about 10 months ago for another NC city. There are NO 2 bedroom apartments for $700. There are 2 properties that offer a 2 bedroom, 700 sq ft for $950 month. My rent for a 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment was increasing $250 month for 2024. If you’re on a fixed income, then Hickory might NOT be for you. Aside from that, it’s a great town, has the major stores, a mall, restaurants & lots to do.

Just moved from NE Florida. Florida HOA $1,800/yr vs. $420/y in Hickory, joining beach/golf club $50,000 initiation and $950/mo dues vs. $2,000-$3,500 initiation in Hickory, house taxes $12,000/yr vs. $4,800 in Hickory, auto insurance $3,600/yr vs. $1,600 in Hickory, just the beginning and there are many more examples... Sold the 3,000 sq/ft house for two times the cost of a 5,500 sq/ft house in Hickory. Made the move to Hickory and putting $4,000/mo in my pocket. As military retiree, no state tax on my retirement. One shock was the initial auto registration in NC.

Live north east of Denver, CO and feel that cost of living here has skyrocketed over the last several years. Just paid $3.39 for gas, usually spend around $1700 on groceries a month (2 adults, 1 teenage boy), we commonly spend at least $800-$1000 eating out a month, we could easily rent our 3 bed / 2.5 bath, 1192 sq ft townhome for $2400 a month, but it’s the housing prices that are ridiculous! A new construction house that would be around $300,000 in Hickory would be at least $575,000-$600,000 here.

In every single NC video, everyone gripes about the humidity with no context. My summers are 8 weeks or more of consistent/consecutive days near or over 90f with over 90% humidity. When it rains, it makes it even worse. Is this the same, better, or worse than the norm in NC?

That’s a good point! Context and where in NC would definitely change your perception of the humidity! Your Summers sound pretty humid! We live in the Foothills of NC so it’s mainly humid in the hottest parts of Summer or after rain. The coast is more humid, and the mountains feel less humid of course! Depends on what you’re used to and what part of NC you end up in. The further East, the more humid for us.

The “come here” versus “been here” thing is not just Hickory, it’s all over North Carolina, maybe all over the South, and maybe nationwide, if not worldwide. I think it’s best described as small-town insularity. People are both a little bit defensive and a little bit judgmental of outsiders. Example: I think this tendency is even more true of Molokai. P.S. I used to live in Newton and work in Charlotte for awhile. P.P.S. It’s Wainos, not Wayn-e-os, and nobody calls it The Silver Bullet. That place is kinda legendary in a Porky’s kinda way. Just sayin’. I have never been inside there either. 🤷🏼‍♂️

That's on the other side of the state, where that coal ash pollution incident happened. It's near the coast, we're in Western NC, the foot of the mountains--the foothills.

I always considered “downtown” Startown to be the intersection of Hwy 10 and Startown Road. 🤔
