When gluing the pieces together, use glue gun or super glue, just tape them first then apply glue

The fact that you were able to sculpt the lids with wood filler is impressive. This build reminds me of the old Master chief days. I can still smell the resin and car body filler.

I used 200 grit for shaping the helmet and then used 600 grit for making the surface smooth
