My trouble with religion whether it's Christianity or Islam is as you said, people pick and choose aspects of it to suit their purposes, including taking things to the extreme (onward Christian soldiers, freedom fighters, etc). Personally I don't go to church and my belief in a greater good whether you call it God or the Universe or whatever is something I question everyday. The only bottom line conclusion I can come to so far, the only truth for me, is that the world would be just fine if we could all just learn to follow the Golden Rule. How much more complicated than that does it need to be?

We now have many different types of telescopes. Some only see in infrared, others see in UV or radio etc. The biggest breakthrough came with the Hubble telescope which is in space & therefore has a clear view without the distortion caused by our atmosphere. It was launched in 1990 & is still producing amazing images. It will take about 9 months to get to Mars when it's closest to Earth. There's very little doubt that there is intelligent life on other planets but the distance is the biggest barrier.
