I remember reading about how Toriyama and the illustrators were so excited to finally start drawings fights with adult Goku. The longer limbs and height allowed for more dynamic choreography of these fights and it really shows.

I personally enjoy all 3 equally, all 3 OG, Z and S are unique in their own way, (OG is more of an Adventure Story Telling Anime, Z is more of an Action Anime, and Super is more of a "Modern Gen" Anime) All 3 need different mindsets to be fully enjoyed and I feel thats what some people have trouble or dont really realize. For the most part OG fans love OG, like Z and cant really get into Super, Z Fans Love Z, like Super and cant really get into OG, Super fans cant really get into either, aside from the generational gap, you really have to shift your mindset while watching each but doing that will make all 3 Fantastic lol I even love GT too haha

You two are the freaking best for so many reasons, you pay attention to the story and your reference game is on point. This tournament is so good, our boys who came back fresh and strong, Piccolo who came back fresh and strong too, Krillin who became much braver that he could stand Piccolo, the Sokidan of Yamcha (idk how it called in English), Shen who is actually Kami, the awesome revenge between Goku vs Tenshinhan, the discussion between Kami and Piccolo in another language and the mafuba is so badass too, and this awesome fight between Goku vs Piccolo which is on another level, there are so many reactions you could do about this tournament

something i never noticed before is how piccolo never really uses anyone as a hostage or something near the end when hes on fumes unlike his dad....he wants to win fair just like goku...he does not kill anyone or try to really....he tells them all its not their fight and to just back off...he respects kururrin i bet after their fight...it showed humans are not all spineless and weak.....in theory theres no stakes near the end cause the full powered albeit semi fatigued z fighters combined should be able to kill piccolo or just kill kami fast enough as the others distract piccolo if need be even if goku lost cause piccolo is also hurt and tired so theres no real fear or stakes at the end besides for goku's life which is why goku wants to win alone to ad some stakes but if hes about to be killed they could step in and kill kami...or kami can help them kill his other half.....piccolo jr. wants to rule like a king not kill everything...big difference..but he has to kill goku for his dad who gave him his powers and that mission probably playing in his mind every second...he wants to kill goku and prove that hes the best at the competition where humans decide it aka the people his daddy feared and wanted killed last time who goku revived...he wants to prove he earned i and deserves to rule...and on top of that they have this limited space to fight aka a ring and they still want to move slow enough for people to watch and goku wants to win the tourney for the first time as he has lost in the finals twice and now he wants to win to impress chi chi as he is with his new fiancé who is watching up close in torture fearing for him seeing him get hurt for the first time which makes her traumatized about fighting which explains her over protectiveness about gohan and thus she was only learning to fight to see goku at the 23rd budokai hopefully after being known as a coward as a child who always thought goku was super strong and all this in front of his master who tells kami at the end that without him these kids never would of found each other and saved the world...its awesome storytelling how goku spares piccolo gives him a bean says if kami dies the balls are gone and thus he can't kill piccolo or kami and tells piccolo to be his rival cause he needs one to motivate himself to be better/work harder for as he trains and goku shows no fear even as the enemy laughs and flies off claiming revenge one day...and how after kami offers goku role of guardian and he just ditches it to marry chi chi cause he wants to get laid which he can't if hes the guardian i assume and he would have to leave her behind or force her or live on the lookout away from her dad aka a place where he stayed for 3 years alone basically away from the world and i bet got tired of at this point of time...yeah nice choice goku..he leaves his friends as champ and will not see them for 5 years....its so fitting...

Very iconic fight. This really was the transition from Db type fights to DBZ type fights with the blasts and Piccolo's transformation. Finally after so many attempts throughout the show; Goku is the Worlds Marital Arts Champion! The moments after the fight are worthy of a reaction as well imo.

I'm a fan of Z, but when we talk about fights in Dragon Ball why many forget about this epic and amazing fight, for me i put in my top 5 of fights!

this is the best animated fight of the show..vegeta vs. goku being 2nd...this is my fave...its so brutal...clearly meant to be the end of the series...this may be a top 5 fight in all of anime...many fights copy it..luffy vs crocodile is one...

in the manga its a lot quicker but also a lot less filled with reaction shots and dialogue so its a lot better...difference between manga and anime..in manga you can guess the speed..in anime it feels slow cause they have to show you but also extend episodes to not catch up to manga so it feels slower then it should be sometimes fight wise...

its real martial arts style just a bit faster then normal with some z flare which we were not used to yet and took the previous big fight's energy beam light show spectacle up a notch....for sure...and the stakes drama and story at least the first part of the story with all the threads characters and plot points being wrapped up its insane how good this fight is...its not about the fight itself its the way its been built to this fight and the execution of the fight the reactions to it the aftermath love it...to me its not even the actual fight i care about much..its seeing chi chi for example in pain watching this and trying to stop it multiple times in tears feeling powerless as the others hold her back and force her to stop and do not help despite caring for goku for his wishes to win fairly without help..now we see why she hates his friends and this lifestyle and keeps gohan from it..its pointless violence and mindless and traumatic to her so she tries to avoid talking about it......and how happy she is both times she thinks he won and the way she knows how much that means to him to win the budokai more then even beat his foe..its about kururrin and tenshinanans roshi and blooma and kami..its more then just a fight..its a climax to the whole story up to that point...for real...the real stakes are not even the fight..they can kill kami if need be...or fight together and beat piccolo at the end cause hes tired...goku's safety is the only stake cause he wants to win alone...its his mess he wants to clean it up...in reality the others can overwhelm piccolo...this is what makes it work..its about the turns...why is she getting so mad at the scene for example when they count?...its drama...why only focus on the fight itself?..who does that?..she knew he would get up but so did kids..thats not the point...its goku feeling happy and his friends counting and then bam vital injury as he let his guard down and turned around for one moment and now hes not the winner of the budokai technically plus he is in pain and may die...

Your right Kami was in the bottle; him and Piccolo fought earlier in the tournament. That's why Goku didn't want to risk destroying him with the Super Kamehameha. They didn't yet know that killing Piccolo would also kill Kami. They also didn't know killing either of them would cause the Dragonballs to stop working; which is why Krillin suggested they could just wish Kami back.

This is probably my favorite fight in the series. Its the progenitor of almost all the classic DBZ fights we know and love, but it just feels so fresh and visceral. The choreography is PEAK, combining the martial arts of the previous fights and reasonably escalating it using these fancy new Ki powers. LOVE Piccolo's old theme too. This fight just gets everything right.

whats really sad is theres actual story going on..people miss so much just watching the fights alone on youtube and nothing else from original db...unlike z theres actual story around these fights...you got everyone meeting up again after 3 years which includes goku seeing kururrin and roshi again after they died which he only saw for a few days before after 3 more years of timeskip training apart from then plus we get adult chi chi appearing for the first time in the manga at least its been years since we saw her in real time and in their time 6 years since they saw her last then tenshinhan vs tao which was revenge for chiaotzu whose in the hospital and then goku winning vs chi chi getting engaged then beating tenshinhan in the rematch of the last finals two rival school students going at it is iconic again and then kami vs pikkoro and him getting trapped and kururrin vs pikkoro and yamcha showing his spirit ball vs kami earlier and yajirobe failing in the prelims..who gives senzu to goku and he gives one to his enemy stopping kami from killing him after celebrating his first win ever at the budokai showing he can fly for the first time and he makes pikkoro his rival saying he can't kill him cause of kami then kami tries to make goku a god..then he flies away not seeing anyone there for 5.5 years to go live with chi chi make gohan get married live where he grew up ...iconic...can't forget roshi's speech to kami..so good...

i miss the creativity..goku using his feet for a kamehameha and using air to push himself or others without hitting them and pikkoro being able to turn big extend his arms and split into 2-3 of himself while regenerating limbs hes torn off and tenshinhan growing 2 arms or splitting himself into 4 or be able to put his life essence itself into a blast that is devastating...this show started to get weird power wise like one piece pre haki and it was wild i loved it personally....it was very interesting to see it evolve from simple martial arts and gags to real powers...general blue's ability to freeze his foes with a stare if you look at his eyes like wtf.......

They found out near the end of the end of the fight that kami and piccolo were spiritually link and of one dies the other will. You're thinking in the generic sense of because kami is inside me if you try to kill me you kill kami which is the way piccolo used to bottle. Because literally right after goku is stopped because super Kamehameha would kill piccolo krillin says we can used the dragonballs to restore his life like you did me. Which wouldn't work because the two are spiritually linked. And the audience doesn't know this yet until way near the end of the fight when kami states it. Its also further proven because piccolo says I killed the dragon a 2 years ago.
