In Battletech, I was once asked, why I dedicate so much tonnage to AMS and point defense weaponry instead of going just for capital weapons. True, in that game a war ship can take a lot of punishment, but if you can stay in the game for a few round longer those defense weapons will benefit more than one capital weapon.

I kinda feel the balancing of the Modern Basestars could use some tweaking. Once they run out of missiles*, they are basically useless. The Battlestar can turn off his flak and engage them head-on. They should probably have a regenerating missile supply that regenerates more slowly than the usual missile cooldown, at least for standand guiding missiles or torpedoes. *) realistically, they should at some point, but we never see any engagement in the series where the fight lasts that long, just as the Galactica and Pegasus never seemed to run out of Flak ammo during an engagement.

My strategy for this battle if I was the Cylons would've been to make a quick jump to the rear of the mercury class ship, keeping some distance to not get vaporized by the guns. And then fire off my nukes. And if they started the flak I'd then put my raiders to defend my ships from the incoming ordinance(so I don't lose one of my only defenses against ordinance). With the Mercury either dead or heavily wounded. I'd keep peppering it while having another Basestar make a quick jump and fire off the ordinance. Killing the ship while keeping my distance from enemy ships. And if they turn, I keep jumping to the opposite sides making sure to be hitting from 2 separate sides. And I'd make sure to hack some systems. Especially the weapons to be able to get a better range and shut down the Armory preventing flak from vaporizing my missiles.

I think this also shows why you need to be above or below your target with a Jupiter class. The clusters of 8 main guns mounted on the top or bottom barely get to fire if you are at the same altitude with the Cylon ships.

It occurs to me that, after years of the show and these games, we've never once heard, "Frakking flak."
@CapitanoAraym3 жыл бұрын
I just put my hands on the "Modern Ships" DLC: first battle I made, in skirmish, was Galactica (Jupiter-class Mk.2) and Pegasus (Mercury-class) vs 4 Cylon Basestars, as the battle of New Caprica. Even if fully loaded with missiles and cluster-nuke the 2 Colonial Battlestars' flaks were basically impenetrable both to them and all the cylon fighters (I kept just the Jupiter as "frontliner", to make it aggroed by all the 4 Basestars, and her flaks were even too much). Once they had no more missiles, it was just a steamroll...
@WildCharger3 ай бұрын
It does feel a bit of an exaggeration in this game how utterly impenetrable flak shields are when boosted by posture. We could theoretically give whatever excuse we wanted - but I think the most realistic one is that, in an actual scenario of this magnitude, there would be at least a couple missiles that get through, and ammunition to deploy flak would not be infinite. But those are sort of the things you have to allow leeway for because game logic. If it was 100% fully faithful to reality, it’s not, because at least a small majority of the civilian ships, even in the reimagined Galactica, have nothing to arrest their own momentum. If it was 100% faithful to the show, then I highly doubt they’d want to just run the clock and hope that the Basestars just.. run out of missiles eventually, whilst a much larger amount of Raiders use overwhelming numbers to at least put a heavy dent in Viper numbers, or strategically take out a ship’s FTL, etc. There’s a lot of possibilities.

Honestly I find that with modern basestars they play more similar to a cratus than an argos, you wanna close the gap with your ftl jump and combine your two instant reload munition slots with hacking and overwhelming fighters. The way they are shown in the tv show, combined with the lack of guns, makes most people try to play long range, but ironically you want to do the opposite and charge in immediately. Its basically a cratus with a phobos FTL jump, and cerberus worth of squadrons in the pocket. Jump in turn 1 and unleash missiles, fighters, and hacking to just bury fleets, and jump away and recall when they get too beat up. Then repeat once hull repair is good enough.
@sevi1173 жыл бұрын
For balance there should be 2 flak modes. One only with the PDS that would be overwhelmed more easily but allowed to fire the main guns through it and one that was like the actual but disabled the main guns for ship to ship combat focusing them por flak (like the Galactica does in the show everytime it's cornered)

One of BSG Deadlocks problems, that makes battlestars overpowered, is they have got the flak completely wrong. In the game, if you turn on flack it turns off your point defence guns, but your 'battlestar artillery' still fires. What is supposed to happen however is flack is fired from the MAIN battery, meaning if you have flack up it is your main guns that should not be firing at the enemy! Therefore, rather than just losing point defence, the Artemis, Minerva and Jupiters should actually lose all their battlestar artillery to put flack up, while the Mercury should only retain its bow battery (which does not fire flak).
@Mobius_1182 жыл бұрын
Battlestars can still fire their main artillery while keeping up a flak barrier (as evident by the Resurrection Ship battle, during the Captain's Hand episode when the Pegasus gets ambushed, the Ionian Nebula battle, and the battle of the Colony). The main batteries can contribute to a flak barrier, but aren't the primary source of it. With the Mercury-class, they have their AAA concealed between their armor plating (most likely a standard feature aboard Battlestars, but the Mercury was they only one that that's mentioned on).
@Debbiebabe692 жыл бұрын
@@Mobius_118 During the Resurrection Ship battle, Adama orders a section of his main battery to stop firing flack and start firing at the base ship (when he orders batteries A through E to 'switch to salvo fire'). Cain puts down his flack field and orders ALL his batteries to fire offensively (you actually start seeing Pegasus rocking and taking more hits after this). Both battlestars obviously keep up their smaller AAA fire. During The Captains Hand, Adama jr. only orders the bow battery, her 86 inch forward cannons that do not even fire flack, to engage the base ships. All the rest of her guns are still devoted to flack. During the Ionan Nebula and Colony battles, Galacticas main battery was firing completely defensive.
@Mobius_1182 жыл бұрын
@@Debbiebabe69 A Battlestar has two types of AAA: Long range which is what their main guns fire and CIWS which is what's shown here. Even if the CIWS is active, the main guns are free to engage enemy capital ships. The primary contributor to CIWS for the Galactica is the smaller guns mounted on the sides of the flight pods (which is why you lose the secondary guns in game when you turn on flak) as well as several guns that are never shown on the CGI model. The Pegasus has guns concealed between its armor plates which is how it can produce a flak barrier above and below itself despite all of its main guns being mounted either on the bow or the sides with no ability to aim up. - During the Resurrection Ship battle, you still see bursts of flak from both Battlestars even after the order is given to switch the secondary batteries to full attack mode, though not as concentrated as they were previously (the Galactica even intercepts 4-5 missiles in the shot right after that line). - During the Captain's Hand, Lee fires the turrets mounted above the Pegasus's main guns in conjunction all the while the Pegasus is still producing a flak barrier. - During the Colony battle, the Galactica's main guns were firing normal anti-capital shells at the Colony's defenses while maintaining a flak barrier with its secondary batteries and AAA.
