Still a long wait till 2037. Thanks for showing the beautiful book shelf and the volumes of OED.

You must get your pronunciation correct of the town and district in Mozambique called 'Tete'. The correct way to say it is " Teyt" not "Te Te".

I have the first three books. Her first book was recommended to me by a lady who may have known this author. I have many books on people growing up in Africa. One book I found was A Child of Happy Valley by Juanita Carberry a book if you can find it rates highly on my reading list. Of interest a good friend of ours was telling me about his grandfather growing up in Kenya during that era. I said I have a book you maybe interested in, I showed him this book and he immediately said his grandfather knew her and that as a young child living back in England he got some presents from Juanita. I love true stories and am wading through writings by authors who grew up in Iran and Afghanistan.

I've been looking for a good biography of VSW. I was trying to decide between this one and the one by Victoria Glendinning. I settled on this one based on your review. I might still pick up the Glendinning bio at some point. I also have both the other books you recommended. Creation of a Garden is superb, and I have yet to read the Adam Nicholson book but it looks great. Excellent and enchanting review of an enchanting personage.

The OED is an impressive tome...I wonder how the future will see it. I've had a Harvard Unabridged for decades...It's magical to look through it but; The computer has replaced it for general purposes...I'm in my 60's and sadly the world no longer admires feats of intellectual grandeur...Finding people that read, or have read, anything of substance is the sighting of a rare bird. Shakespeare is all but dead. Melville and even Twain are no more discussed than the steam engines of their time... The world must be turned on its head for the great change it silently shrieks for to occur ......Thanks for the video...I learned from it...

What are your half-dozen favourite essays written by Hitch ? Mine would include his long essays on Proust and Churchill, his essay on Raymond Williams and Orwell, the one you read an excerpt from on Women and Humour, as well as essays on Kipling and on the King James Bible.

I enjoyed your engaging commentary. I only wish that you had kept the examples on the screen long enough for us to actually see/appreciate the interior and to absorb how your commentary related to that interior.

I just watched the Movie with Anne Bancroft and Sir Anthony Hopkins....in as much as the Era and that NY-Attitude shown through, I hated the ending! I didn't really get moved by her at that point....I felt at that point she should just return all the Books and open the Shop back up! ...but, I guess then that would be Hollywood! :) I am certain someone will say the book ending was much more clever than "Here I am, Frankie, I finally made it." ....Oy Vey!

Thank you for the review. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, my Aunts father, a local doctor, received a call one night from the police station in his part of Scotland, could the doctor visit the station there was a man in the cell with a broken ankle? When the door swung open, there in the corner of the cell was the number 2 in the Third Reich. They were desperate times though, the doctor had a file of lethal drugs in his surgery for him and the who family, including children, if the Nazis ever conquered Britain. But fortunately we had the Royal Navy, The Royal airforce, and many good friends abroad who helped us when Britain was alone amongst European countries, being unconquered. What amazes me is all of this was so recent in terms of history.
