I have learned that those yellow tape measures have slack at the tip that people 'hook' onto wood. So I took one and cut it off at 1" and at 19" and I cut it dead center of both black lines. It gave me an extra 1/8" to my benefit. I would use a dowel but not the size of the one you demonstrated with. I use a 1/4" dowel and move it around until it seats it's self in the dead center of the breach block, then I mark the rod like you do but not with a knife. I move the rod around in a circle and let the barrel make the mark at the very tip of it. Just my suggestion.

You can use the cold packs after they have been used by, filtering it thru a coffee filter than boiling the water out of the remaining solution. Dont use the solids you filter out of the cold water, the fraction that is not soluble in cold water is no good.

I used veggie oil for bar and chain oil a year ago. Thought it was a great idea. Worst mistake I ever made. The oil polymerized and turned to plastic and goo throughout. Not counting the time scraping and scrubbing it off of four chains, I have spent over four hours scraping and scrubbing this crap off of and OUT of the bar, the oiler, underneath the clutch and out of all the crevices. DON'T DO THIS!

Have my Vietnam era P38 opener and still use quite often. Today, I bought some imported Cans of crushed tomato's and my regular electric opener wouldn't handle the heavier gauge steel the can was made of. Got out my trusty P38 and Wella!!!......takes a bit, but opened the can perfectly.
