I recently found an axe stuck in a live tree. Looks like a good quality axe head from what I can see. I've owned the property almost twenty years so it's been there longer than that. The tree has grown around it. It's really cool, just don't know what I’m going to do with it.

@ I do but it is bittersweet. Mostly I found my tool hauls from mutual blue collars who sadly passed away and their offspring didn’t see the value in their tool boxes and vintage hand tools. I have milk crates full of axe heads/hammer heads/vices/clamps/etc. that I salvaged from the landfill. Just couldn’t resist it since they don’t make them like they use to. Sold a few on eBay but I’ve found solace in hanging axe heads and getting a rudimentary set up to keep these tools alive. I wish people would donate their vintage tools to the next generation but that would require A) rekindling that interest B) teaching them via shop class or another venue to use them properly C) assuring them that this knowledge has value. Is what it is. I’ll keep picking them from the garbage pile for the next generation. Someone will see the value. I hope. 🤞

How not to sharpen an axe. It's for cutting wood not paper, it needs a convex edge not a scandi

Never be afraid to make a mistake, it’s all in learning something new. Buy two handles for your first axe. After you do 5 axes you’ll start making the handles yourself and learning how to read the boards before buying them.

I don't consider 'grain runout', in and of itself to be a particular problem, the main decider for me is what I have always known as 'short grain'. If you were to cut a handle in slices along the growth rings it becomes easier to appreciate the difference. Broadly speaking the handles ability to stay intact, is related to the surface area of each of the slices [and that will vary quite a bit along a curved handle] and to where in the handle, these small surface areas or 'short grain' occur. Where you draw the line between runout and short grain is a matter of judgement a handle maker has to take for each handle.

For sledge handles I choose one that has perpendicular grain. Heads are generally heavier than most axes, but are straight along the length. It's my view that the 'completely wrong' grain orientation transmits less shock through to the users hands, provided of course that the grain is parallel along the handle's length. sledges tend to get a lot more of a of a hammering than axes. Can I prove all that ? Nope - it is just my own observation. A bit of runout on an axe does not generally bother me too much, but 'short grain' absolutely does. Got a 4" scar to remind me ... that one came from a short grain break.

Absolutely agree. Having smooth ground bevels and cheeks up to the depth they are likely to be sunk, makes a big difference to efficiency in use. Makes no sense to me to grind out every last pit and crater in this area, just keeping the main top surface smooth is plenty good enough. Back in the day, I reckon the only time the complete axe would ever be polished would be for a retirement present. These days, they seem to be for wall hangers in macho man caves As for wedges, the main reason for them bouncing is there is a tendency for folks to not sharpen them to a fine enough angle. Given the rough nature of their use, they will suffer wear and tear and it takes time to maintain the edge and keep the cheeks smooth. With careful use of a fine flap disc and/or a belt sander, this extra work takes very little time. I bought a new wedge last year that had an included angle of 60 degrees at the tip, about the same as a cold chisel ! Most casual users buying them, simply don't know that the edge has to be significantly corrected for it to work, they just assume they are meant to be like this.

Pop quiz 90% of the products in the grocery store cause cancer or actually it activates cancer! Because we all have Cancer cells in our bodies! Here's another huge fact there have been several Doctors, Scientists just in America that have cured Cancer since the very early 1900s! That will answer my statement that I made about 90% products cause cancer in our Grocery stores! It's actually higher than 90%! I Do Not make this Statement for No reason! I make it to open people's eyes! Listen you are using your phone or computer so start researching what I said and don't look up Americans Fake lies News! Look up BBC and there candy products and different colors between USA and Great Britain! Then research Monster energy drinks and 5 hour energy! Then here's the big one Sagar!! If a product says Sagar free then it's got fat in it and if says fat free then it has Sagar and if it says Sagar free and fat free then it tastes terrible! This is on purpose! Get to work find this out and more then tell family and friends,! God bless and Jesus Saves!
