Amazing playing Asraj, you feel the spirit of the instrument. Maybe you have a longer recording with these instruments - very suitable for meditation.

Hugh Tracey did a great job of preserving this traditional music. He however is not the one who created the Kalimba. He created his own version of the Kalimba. The Kalimba, like the Mbira, is a very ancient instrument occurring in many different variations all across Africa.
@markkilianschannelАй бұрын
Correct! What Andrew did was made a ‘western version’ of the kalimba that was diatonically or pentatonically tuned to the western equal tempered system so that they could easily play with any other instrument depending on key. And this made it perfect for education, which is why you will find them in so many schools and as toys and for kids.

How easy is it to retune the tanpura and swarmandel to a new key? Is it something you could do during a piece of music assuming you had a rest section to do it or is that way too complicated?
@markkilianschannelАй бұрын
I would say it’s fairly possible to return the tanpura part depending, for example, I will often team the D down to C, which is perfectly doable in the middle of a performance. On the swarmandal side it’s not so easy. Possible if just a string or 2 has to be retuned. But anything more than that practically impossible.
@trabouliste10375 ай бұрын
What do you mean with „tuning them correctly“, sure that you don’t mean western tunings/ temperaments?!
@markkilianschannelАй бұрын
Actually, in my case, yes I do mean tuning them to an equal temperament system as I would with any of my instruments because I use them all in the context of writing film music and so they have to be able to play with any other instrument in my studio and indeed a group of string players in Budapest or orchestra wherever. But if I were to play a gig with say Pops Mohammed, well then he might very well tune outside of that framework which would be very common in indigenous mbira playing and in accompanying him I would then tune to his tuning whatever that may be.

The berimbau has more than 2 tones. You produce an open and an a closed tone with the gourd and the coin 4 tones, the coin pressed lightly on the string making a buzzing tone plus the wah wah tone of the gourd.

Hi Mark, great interesting video, I recently got the 660 s for £259, as the s2 been out fir few months , I tend to use 660 straight onto the ifi zen dad v2 using the balanced 4.4mm pentergon lead with the true bass button selected and does come alive at the lowe frequency end. However if have the 6XX also but now fitted with custom cabs mod which also help with the lower bass end. I know that 6XX and 650 not quite the same but the custom cans mod can also be fitted to 650 too. Regards Mark

Awesome video. My grandparents in Monterrey talked about Platon Garza, who was said to be first person to use a bajo sexto in Santiago, Nuevo Leon around late 1800's-early 1900s. Of course the first to record music with a bajo sexto was Tomas Ortiz from Los Alegres De Teran. Another note, If you look up Los Hermanos Cardenas, they played lots of Mazurkas and Polkas from that era.

Well I can't speak for those models so can't compare. But the 650's will basically be timeless. The have to gadgetry to age them. They just do what they do well, reliably and seemingly forever.

nice! I play the sitar and happened upon this video searching for some set-up tips for an acquaintance who acquired an esraj from the late 1800s. I have a theory off the top of my head that the peacock story *may* be sort of like a christmas tree-type syncretic effort to incorporate symbolism associated with Saraswati into the Sikh holy music tradition. Either way, it's a beautiful story. thanks for the vid! I'll check out your channel!

Thank you! Yeah, like so much in culture and religion, stories are just stories and whether we know the truth or not, they take on their own life and then become part of the culture or the religion. It is fascinating and never really meant to be taken too seriously.

I bought my Daily's HD650 on Release Day in 2004. As First adopters they came exclusively in an Walnut Wood Crate and an Grey Fabric Bow around. There was a Card sticked on with "Welcome to the Sennheiser Family" . Exactly now typing i have them on my Ears. These Headphones are my Soulmates in Music. They were going dameged over the Years, Cable, Headband, Shell, Cussions.. a few Clicks at Sennheiser-de and OEM-Spareparts were ordered cheaper and faster than every shady eBay Seller ever did.

I don’t understand why i see so many positive comments on the HD660S it makes me wonder if there is something wrong with my pair because when i listen to music i feel like the music is behind a curtain (veil) i do agree about them sounding very natural but it’s a bit disappointing at this price tag when comparing to other headphones. I have tried out several different EQ settings and the veil is not there to the same amount anymore but it’s still there to some degree, imaging is good but there is not a lot of soundstage. The weird thing however is that on some days they sound better and on other days worse, it’s a bit weird i must admit
@markkilianschannel Жыл бұрын
Well I do agree to a certain extent and I think I even mention in the vid that it sounds a bit like a veil in the high end. But for working with these cans the way I do I find that a positive as they don't fatigue me the way other cans do. And also as I mentioned in the vid I have to work a bit harder at mastering with these which is a good thing because once I've got a good result with these cans, it tends to translate quite well to other systems. So I don't know if there is something wrong with yours, but for me these cans are good workhorses that are flat and don't highlight any frequencies.

For mixing and coming from Sony 7506 which would you recommend that gets you closer to a mix that works on numerous devices? My fear is I’m going to hear a muffled sound on I coming from Sonys. Curious about Slate VSX
@markkilianschannel Жыл бұрын
Well either the 650 or 660's would be a significant upgrade from your Sony's. But as I said in the video what's more important is how well you know the phones you're mixing on then the phones themselves. If you're happy with the mixes you're getting from the Sony's then stick to them. But when I compare my mixes on the Sennheisers and the Sony's the Sony's are much further away from what I want to hear. Those Sony's are great for in-studio work but I wouldn't mix or master with them myself.
@ST-fl5fy Жыл бұрын
@@markkilianschannel tuck you for the reply I’ve heard they they are a bit dark. Which of the two are more pushed in the hi end? Would an Apollo twin power them sufficiently? Thanks
@markkilianschannel Жыл бұрын
@@ST-fl5fy Well I wouldn't call them dark. They're just more neutral and not pushed in the high end like so many are. Of the 2 the 650's I find a little more pronounced in the high end. But you'll get a little less volume out of the 650's compared to the 660's. However, that's not a problem with the Apollo as they'll drive the 650's beautifully.

I'm native born Mexican and now a naturalized American citizen, growing among relative musicians and started to wanna learn how to play an instrument, but no one had accordions pianos or brass instruments, only guitars. And I started to pickup an instrument since I was around 8 years old. And been playing music for more than 50 years. Accordion, guitar, bajosexto, upright bass, keyboard, saxophone, bass guitar, and very basic drum playing. But I listened to your video about your Candela bajoquinto, and your interview with Bajosexto pro. Musician Marco Polo. Man!! Congratulations!! Mark, I can tell you,ve done intensive research on bajoquintos and their origin, plus their culture. Keep up the great work!
