For me, the primary "message" if there is one in grimdark, is that there are no sides. It's about exploring humanity, and understanding that everyone has a reason for their actions. Most of the time, we just fail to recognize or really understand those reasons. Grimdark is about seeing the world through many different lenses, and seeing how dogged adherence to any viewpoint always leads to crushing defeat, or immense suffering. I've started writing grimdark because I love exploring all these different viewpoints, but I want to do it without as much of the nihilism that seems to plague the genre. It's a bit tricky because in order to maintain that brutal honesty, it really paints a nihilistic world on the surface. But grimdark is about honesty in human nature, and the real world isn't nihilistic. I'm trying to maintain that balance through lore. While the current characters are going to get hit over the head with a brick at every turn, history tells them that in the past their viewpoint has won out, and therefore there's reason for hope. They will spend the entire (6 book's planned) series bludgeoning each other and themselves in an attempt to restore that lost hope.

17:16 funny, I've been watching Dark Materials videos in the background at work today, and yours is one of the last--but every single video I was reminded of this part. Lyra being separate from Pan was such a devastating moment. I was in my early teens reading these books and that really resonated with me, even at the time. I was also pretty young when I saw the movie, and remember loving it. The HBO series doesn't seem to appeal to me for some reason (for the reasons you outlined, actually). I think I'll just re-read the books, honestly. Thank you for this wonderful video.

I actually loved "The Golden Compass." It appears that the Christian/Catholic establishment silenced the film by way of sabotage and it is a shame. I never even picked up on any religious themes or anti religious themes in the film. It is simply alternate universe fantasy and the religious fanatics are thus censoring creativity and imagination. What happens to humanity and it's future when religion successfully extinguishes both?

I never read the books but when I first watched the Golden Compass I thought it was whimsical and amazing with some dark moments. I even bought the movie on dvd lol at the time. I haven’t watched His Dark Material yet but now I’m not sure if want to 😢…

I love the vid pretty much Alex, I’m a newcomer to your channel and even the series but I’d love to read about it. So which chapter should I start with first, because I’m confused with the Northern Lights and the Golden Compass?

Where i live (Ireland) the Golden Compass is always called Northern Lights. Is this just a me thing or do other people have the same copy. Edit I googled it and it does exist

The first time I read his dark materials, I was in 5th grade, I’m in 11th now, and have lost track of the amount of times I’ve read it. What captivated me as a child by being a fantastical, whimsy, and passionate story, now carries so much meaning to me as I now see its relation to the real world. I now understand what Phillip Pullman was getting at, peeling back the layers every time I read it is so astonishing. My aunt asked me the other day what age range the book I never stop taking about was targeted at, and I was dumbfounded, I couldn’t possibly place it in an age restricted box, no matter how hard I tried.every character represents something different for me, the movie growing up was amazing, I never questioned any of the choices the producers made, but now I see the flaws, that, despite not being entirely accurate, or making sense, do not take away from the films value. The excitement I felt when I found out about the show was rivaled only by the idea that this trilogy would gain some more recognition. However after watching it, I was left dissatisfied, it was all wrong, you could tell that it was produced by people who never experienced the books as a child, never felt that wonder, since I can remember I’ve wanted to become a movie producer, and the movies I want to make the most are his dark materials, I want to everything Phillip Pullman wrote about justice, I want other people to read the books and give me their opinion, I want to see different peoples visions, but I want to do them the justice they so dearly deserve. His dark materials has such an immense meaning to me, that I don’t think it will ever not be my favorite series, I am the person I am today because of those books, and they continue to inspire and guide me through becoming an adult, Lyras adventure was there for me when I was alone and a my worst, I could talk about the trilogy for a lifetime and never be bored.

I think slots of the hate is the amount of detail he put into some of the more mundane aspects of the world. The magic users making cheap lace to pay for their war is something that slots of readers will find boring, but it actually let's the world breathe, in my opinion. I'm actually working on a dnd campaign that I am using Eragon as my inspiration. I also just realized that he wrote a couple more books to add to the lore so I know what I'll be reading next.

I agree with your final point, but moreso that the plots of HBO follow the books more, but the characters don't seem like they did in the books. I think it's because of the whimsy and not seeing that in Oxford originally since it was all about kids finding fun things to do and escape. I do love certain choices with the Edwardian and dieselpunk aesthetic, but it's definitely missing scenes like Lyra looking at the maps in the film and dreaming of going to the North
@Char10tti3Ай бұрын
Like the HBO cast explain, Ariel just goes away for two books and the ideas of the Intention Craft and his war are very on the fringes of the story. Because of covid, they had to cut all of their Asriel scenes of Ariel planned for series two

It's always worth listening to the original Iorek voice actor in the video games. He actually was the last special thanks in the movies because he was cut after finishing everything for Mckellan as a "big name".

It breaks my heart when the Inheritance series is bashed by others and Harry Potter is praised. Yes Harry Potter is a good series, but it's just the Hero's Journey told using elements from other stories. Both series are amazing, but the Inheritance series will be my favorite

The irony to me is that it was the 4th book that was the weakest. Paolini was SO desperate to close out nearly a dozen plotlines that he did so in a rushed and phenomenally unfulfilling manner. The last book was incredibly dissapointing to me.

Tbh season 1 was painfully slow and the way will was introduced into the show seemed kind of rushed in season 1. Season 2 and 3 (especially season 3) were amazing in every bit. They just nailed it. The person who posted this video probably watched season 1 and dropped it.

I agree with everything in this video but it was worth reading thinking there must be a winning ending. Here it is Aug 2024, just finished The Secret Commonwealth and now see there is no 3rd Dust book following the above amazing book. I thought amazing because I could see how it reflected the darkness that is our world now and the blatantly horrifying evil that is the Authority. But actually Pullman wanted to drag his readers down into his darkness!! As we all know, the problem with this book is it leaves you hanging at the end … with NO ‘to be concluded’ in sight. I have concluded that Pullman couldn’t care less about his readers and is part of the evil himself. It shows in the so called Dustbbook 3, the imagination chamber, which is an insult to his readers and an obvious cash grab!

Eragon was the book that got me into fantasy when I was a kid. Everything I love about fantasy today. Swords, magic, and especially dragons. All started with Eragon. Is it the most masterful fantasy series ever written? No. But it is an excellent entry point into the genre. When I have kids of my own someday and I want to introduce them to the basics of what epic fantasy is all about, Eragon will be the book where I start them off.

Don't critics realize that even great writers like Tolkien are inspired by older works? Tolkien's LOTR is basically Shakespeare, the Bible and Beowulf combined with his own style. Every work is loosely based on those that came before that inspired the writer.

I still love Eragon, and enjoyed all of the sequels, and while it does lead into the "traditional story" lotr style, it also promptly dumps that on its head and run that way intentionally. I will always defend these books and you have to start with Eragon! Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone.
