Hope you had a great Christmas and happy holidays. So my CEL recently came on (it's been awhile) and it's throwing me a code 26 (running rich) I was going to start off with the spark plugs, new wires, and oxygen sensors. Do you think that's the right thing to do at this time?
@AgileWoodsman
@AgileWoodsman 9 күн бұрын
Hey Merry Christmas to you as well! This can be so many things. But i would start by pulling the plugs and inspecting those. Check for wear and gap, replace if worn. Also "read" the plugs. Lots of online resources for that. See if it's running rich, lean, oil fouling, or all looks well. Also inspect wires, cap, and rotor for wear. Replace if needed. Next as far as a good bet, you can change the o2 sensor. If it's a CA car, do the upstream one before the cat. Also toss in a can of fuel injector cleaner for good measure.

I've had a few comments like this if I recall. Mine seems ok until it's over 95 outside and I have the AC on. I never had ac so I figured that was the culprit. However going by comments, it seems some cooling was lost somewhere. I can't figure it out, because many 4runners didn't have the rear heater at all. I'll compare my mod with how my daughter's is set up, no rear heat from the factory, and see what I come up with. I'll make a vid if I solve it.

I dont want to encourage people to delete emission components, but EGR and PAIR valve are purely emission systems. Deleting these will neither increase power, or decrease reliability if done properly. The EGR flows inert exhaust gasses into the intake manifold to lower NOX by reducing cyl temps at cruising* speed. This is only done during low load (aka low engine heat) situations. Under high heat and high load situations when head gaskets are most likely to blow e.g. banging the 3vze to the rev limiter, foot to the floor, climbing a hill, or towing, EGR is OFF. The problem with the EGR is it leaves heavy deposits in the intake manifold and on the intake valves. The EGR (and PAIR) system is heavily prone to vacuum leaks being a ~30+ year old exhaust valve, actuated by a vacuum system. And a vacuum leak leads to a lean condition which will indeed lead to reliability issues! The PAIR valve injects filtered unmetered air into the exhaust during rich condition warmup to help light off the cat and prevent the cat from being over fueled. if you are worried about reliability, service and inspect your cooling system!! and use toyota red coolant! especially on 3vze. also change the oil!
@AgileWoodsman
@AgileWoodsman 9 күн бұрын
I agree with almost all of your assessment. Can't really be argued with. However it taking down several of these motors, deposits weren't an issue. That's just my experience. I would say that if an engine is getting carboned up, other forces are at play. As far as vacuum leaks, a few lines and a gasket are an easy fix. EGR reduces cylinder temps, so my advice is still my advice, on a motor prone to having that #6 cylinder getting hot, don't mess with it. But yeah, guys beating on these things and not maintaining them is a far bigger culprit! Thanks for the input!

good explanation of the process. I will have to go one step further and figure out why the window is coming out of the bottom lifters, and I suspect the adhesive has given way due to poor maintenance and rusty or stuck pivot points on the lifter (shown in your video). If it's as I suspect, I will reglue the window bottom into the holders with a product called 'Thru the roof' which is an incredibly sticky caulk that when set up is flexible but almost impossible to get apart. The same issue of the window coming loose from the lifter can be found in the side windows as well.

@@AgileWoodsmanI was able to fix mine. It was a plugged return coolant line running from the rear of the throttle body. I found my solution on a yotatech forum: get a brake bleeder pump, used the vacuum to pull fluid from the block supply and the throttle body to make sure it could flow. Check. Then I put the hand pump vacuum on the return side, which would pull the fluid the opposite way from which it would normally return to the Y shape pipe the firewall heater-core return it is shared with. I started pulling fluid and there was a distinctive resistance that was quickly and easily overcome. I figured it might be because I was going the wrong way in the way it was suppose to flow. I got my fluid after only a few pumps but there was a lot of particulates in the coolant. There wasn't a plug, per se, but there certainly was a bit of large black flakes.

Although many car enthusiast dog the heck out of the 3vze and are quick to speak negative about it, this motor has a special place in my heart. My father has an 1989 4x4 automatic model and I had her fully rebuilt from the ground up. And when I mean a fully rebuild from the ground up, I'm talking about a full suspension overhaul, a complete engine rebuild, a rear drum to disk brake conversion, a newly rebuilt transmission, rear differential overhaul, drive shaft, and an undercarriage respray. If you get a chance, I have a small KZbin channel pertaining to my journey with my fathers truck. I hope you enjoy my experience the way I've enjoyed watching yours. Thanks for everything, my dude. Could be a vacuum leak or unmetered air coming in between your air box and the throttle body. Mine was doing this and it ended up being the old / brittle crank ventilation tube that plugs into the rubber intake hose. It could not seal onto the valve cover. I replaced it with a $5 generic hose from the parts store. No more low idle. I’d look at the intake parts and see if you have a crack or bad seal somewhere. Good luck!

Lubricating the suspension parts doesn't do anything because there aren't any moving parts to lubricate. The suspension pivots on rubber bushings that flex to allow the arms to move up and down. The creak/squeak sounds shows up when the rubber bushings fail, either the metal sleeve or rubber itself tears and squeaks. You probably blew out your control arm bushings. Jack the front end up, take the wheel off, grab the control arms and wiggle them around. They shouldn't move, if they do, you got blown bushings.
