Very informative. I’ve a couple guitars, purchased new, with tusq nuts from their respective factories and, just one guy’s experience, those are the two guitars that are easiest to tune. Perhaps the material self-lubricates, insert joke here, perhaps it’s just luck of the draw.

Pros and cons about roller nuts? I had two strats, one with metal roller pins and the other with ball bearings.

One of my most requested repairs! I prefer either; Bone, antler or mastadon ivory for nuts. I always have to open nut slots and reshape the exit points on nuts that I'm not replacing. Another issue i see a lot of is slots that are too deep.

On the last kit I built I installed on fine tuned a brass nut. One of my first electrics had one back in the 70s and decided to give it a try again on another. I think the sound on open strings is different then say a bone nut.

My wound strings are never an issue. It's always either the G or B, and most often on my Gibsons where the string isn't a straight pass through. Though if Gibson cut the string right I'm sure they tried cutting it on the required angle to meet the tuner in a straight line.

Fender's quality control and management has gone to hell. I have been a dealer for 30 years. I send back 1/3 of all guitars I get in an order for quality issues. Many get sent from one shop to the next and are never repaired. Its sad because when I reject a guitar it goes directly to GC in my same city. GC and Fender both suck bad.

After years and years of playing and owning tons of guitars from cheap made in China stuff and then owning expensive US or Japan made stuff, I've finally realized the truth: It absolutely does not cost a lot to get a good sounding and good playing guitar that will mostly last. Expensive guitars are hardly worth it in the long run. At least to me. It's about your playing and your style. Can be done well on the cheapest of guitars as long as the action is not too high and neck is straight enough to get good intonation

I have a catalog that shows Greco had a custom shop in the 70s .. the SE1200 was the custom build ¥120,000 at the time say 77’. I only say this as every fender fan says American co fender invented a custom shop process.

Whats hilarious is Facebook marketplace ads for guitar thats priced more than discounted new with 48 month 0% at retailer. 😂 People have no clue. The only people who make money guitars are retailers who sell for a small margin, than take in trades and sell at double that margin.

I've got an American Strat and an American Tele. I put Mexican roasted maple necks on both because the fretboard radius on the Mexican roasted maple necks is much closer to that of the LP's I usually play.

My favorite guitar is an original Fender 1963 Mustang. Incredible to play, and the sound is wonderful. 2nd favorite is a Chinese made Gretsch copy, Billy Bo. Also, it's an excellent guitar and a lot of fun to play.

Weird how my Indonesian "Jackson" guitar was worth more on the used market than my 2015 Fender "American" Stratocastor. Do NOT pay a ridiculous price for a used Fender "American" Strat. There is a glut of Fender American Strats.

I have played other instruments since the late 70's, just getting into electric guitars a few years ago and I can't believe how cheap and decent they are compared to other instruments. I bought a bunch to try them out long term and have only sold one. Think guitars are expensive, shop for a decent oboe.

I have an epiphone les paul that outdid my last usa Gibson... and a MIM that destroys my American pro 2 and old American standard strats. Actually have a squire classic vibe that i prefer playing over my old american standard. The thing people dont get is how many professional musicians (even guitar gods) play a cheaper guitar on stage. John mayer once plugged in a kids guitar that got passed up on stage... sounded like john mayer playing any other strat... and it was probably a squire. I believe Genesis guitar player plays a squire on stage etc. Gary holt has said he used the cheaper edition of his signature on stage. One of kiss guitarists played an epiphone at sold out stadiums and so on and so on.

I would guess the people "hedging the market" are just lying to you and needed the money as well. When you need money in a pinch, the first thing most non serious musicians look to is their instruments.

You know, I would never discourage anyone from trying to learn an instrument. But my two-cents would be, buy a name brand's entry level. Like a Squire Strat. It will be good enough not to be so hard to play as to discourage, but cheap enough that you can pass it down when the time comes. When I learned to play in the 60's, there weren't any starter guitars - there were cheap, incredibly hard to play no-name guitars, and there were brand name $$$ guitars. Today, a starter is a damn good guitar. Investment! Ha. Try crypto if you are in risk mode.
