Great vid. I picked up a tip from Corey Congilio where you press your palm on the strings (light to moderately) and keep it there while applying the capo. This would apply to the spring loaded types, Kyser etc. I was always good at putting a capo on but this tip helped just that little bit more with consistent tuning and pitch.

Makes sense! I have one, but modified with 2 pieces of weather stripping for cheap string noise mute for recording, an upgrade from an old sock, which also works well, good info, thanks, just found your channel.

I still use my original Hamilton capos, made in Hamilton, Ohio back in the '60s. I've tried different ones, but always prefer these.

I bought a G7th Compensated Capo for my Danelectro 12 string and it doesn't screw up the intonation when its on for all the string except the G strings. G string are just nasty, and I'm still working on getting it more perfect.

Really difficult to get a capo just right on my 12 string...especially the tension part as it obviously requires more tension to hold double the strings down.

Lefty's RULE

Great stuff, Mark! And - love that you're a lefty like me. Another set-up issue to check: on most new guitars, the nut slots are too high; they need to be lowered so that they match the other frets. This fixes two problems: 1) it makes the guitar easier to play in first position because the strings aren't too high, and 2) it reduces the intonation problems, because you're not stretching the strings sharp when you press them down (too far) against the frets.

Great videos. Straight and honest from someone who knows what he's talking about. Especially like the observation that "your guitar is never in tune". This is true of any fretted instrument or even a fixed string instrument (such as a piano, which can be in tune for one key, but will then be out of tune for other keys). This was a revelation for me when I watched this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqfQq5qMqb-ni7M Keep up the good work.

Good vid, Gary. I HATE, HATE, HATE capos probably because all we had in the 70s was choice A. A is for Asininely useless. That, and a dose of jazz roots with a real snotty attitude have left me an anti-capo bigot. I found one song once, a country standard that I can't recall, and I had no real good way to play sans rubber band. If I had to play on a stage, I'd probably try to work it out on a baritone or 7-string, and give it a twist.

Capos are like crutches, not needed and cumbersome. Just learn how to barre properly and then learn the thumb wrap reunite and then do whatever the fuck you want after that
