honestly, probably a lack of effort on my part. Takes a long time to get a video up and then kinda lazy when it comes to all the youtube algorithm stuff.

Forgive the ridiculous noobness of this question please, but on the chape, wouldn't it be easier to make a damascus block and then drift in the center and forge it out to length? Also thank you, your videos are very instructional, which is helpful.
@hippoheadforge
@hippoheadforge 2 жыл бұрын
Not a bad question and probably totally possible. I imagine it would be a horrific pain to do and probably need some tools created for the job like a drift about the size of the chape. Might even need a mold to beat it into. Also would have to make a large block just for the chape and then probably lose lots of material. Could probably be milled out of a block as well. All things that are possible but just beyond my scope and would be nothing less than overkill. haha. Great question, absolutely possible!

@@hippoheadforge I see in videos (FiF and others) that people often shape and weld and it confuses me. I have ZERO practical experience in this, but a decent brain. If you're going to forge a big "D" for instance, lots of folks would forge a "U" and then an "I" and weld them together. I know steel is tough to move, I just feel, based on 150+ hours watched (yes, including Mr. Superchamp), that the potential strength and durability of a drifted D would be better. I know the "theory" behind forge welding is that it mates/merges the parts, and Damascus would seem to give weight to that, but there's still that lingering "weld break" history in viewing. If you were going to ?war? knowing the blade was going to be your only tool (weapon, whatever), what would you personally do? How much more time do you think drifting a D would take? The chape I know would be a horn-numbing experience due to the mass, but a blade type thing? Also, thank you again.
