I feel your pain. Vine bores ugh sometimes heard to plant at end of August and supposedly the Vine bores are out of season I'm trying it i hope it works
@gperk92915 сағат бұрын
And have u heard there's a type of squash you can plant away from your squash and the vine bores will go to the trap squash. I think it's like a something blue hubbard squash. Have you heard about this?
@newgardenroad5 сағат бұрын
Yes, I'm not seeing them in the garden recently
@newgardenroad5 сағат бұрын
I have heard of this, and I am sticking with physical barriers. Too much of a risk in a small garden.

I used free wood chips and leaf mold from the local city collection site which was just a couple miles drive and they even loaded my pickup. The smaller particles composted in place during the season and I racked off the bigger chips for reuse the next season.

Have you ever used shredded paper for your mulch? I read you can use it but I’m not sure.

I used that Texas native hardwood mulch extensively when I needed to improve my sandy/clay soil around my house after I removed about 6” of rocks. I used 12 bags at a time 2 springs ago (each quadrant of my house) and it significantly improved my soils so I could plant natives. I didn’t actually use it as mulch but as amendment.

I really appreciate your organized and balanced take on mulch. I hear you on the compacted wood chips. I have to get in my landscape beds and till up the mulch especially through summer. I will use pine straw in my raised beds moving forward. Those birds 🦅 in your video had me cracking up…it’s like they know you’re trying to shoot a video😝

Yes to the leaves. We have a ton of live oaks in the yard, when we rake I run them over with the mower and then use it as mulch over all the landscape beds. Free mulch! Well, free other than the labor of raking… 😅

My natural South Florida soil is very sandy, which drains very fast, but unfortunately it has little to no nutrients, the mulch has been changing it in a very short time though, I plan to keep it going. I did enjoy seeing the differences in the types of mulch, thanks!

Another thing you could do is cover the ground after you've planted the seeds with a mesh fabric like the material wedding veils are made from (tulle) and take it off after the seedlings are big enough. That is what I'm doing in SC zone 8b. You are SO RIGHT about the fire ants. They are nasty. I've learned that they will eat 1 part Borax mixed into 6 parts peanut butter. Carnivorous ants like peanut butter. Supposedly they bring it back to the queen and hopefully, she eats it and your fire ant problem is over.

Great video Scott. A note on pruners - I find anvil pruners better than bypass pruners for larger trees. They're less prone to twisting which is really useful on bigger/hardy branches and deadwood. I find they require less force than bypass pruners too. Greetings from Sydney, Australia

Very nice! What is the process called when you're drying them.... is that the same as curing them like we do potatoes after we harvest them? Beginner here... bear with me please
@newgardenroad21 күн бұрын
Nixtamalization is the processing method that combines cooking and steeping corn in an alkaline solution. Then the corn can be made into masa for making tortillas or dried and ground for making grits and it's nutrients are more available after this process.
