nice and informative vid in saudi arabia we used to have palm dates trees in raws from north to south and they do a great job regarding the shading of undeneath crops and small trees cheers

Hello! Thank you for that insight.

You say 'used to'. Is it done there at all anymore or have new techniques taken over?
@ban96405 ай бұрын
yes it is an old practice in saudi arabia to grow palm dates in 6-8 meters distance then grow most of fruit trees and some vegis which r suitable for our area if u grow in hot dry desert try to do it and see the results without that method trees easily get died from heat in global warming

I literally told my friend this last week that in Texas our crops WILL still grow in shaded areas because of our incredibly intense heat in TX summer!

yeah, plants only use 1/3 of the power of the sun.

Hoping next year I can put up shade cloth for the garden. I did something similar for the chickens, U posts with 8 ft landscape timbers with steel cables across the top to attach the shade cloth to. The winds are tearing them all to hell. I live in Temple, Texas just up the road from you but I’m out in the country with nothing but corn fields around me. The posts are leaning and the grommets are breaking. You must have lots of windbreak around you because bamboo would have lasted me a week. I think I’m going to have to cement my posts in and then take inspiration from you and have cross beams at the top. Then lay the cloth over the opening and screw another board down on the edges to keep the cloth in place. If it works, onto the garden. Thanks for sharing, it’s nice to know the effort and expense will be worth it.

Thank you! I do have some wind breaks, and I never take the integrity of bamboo stakes for granted. Texas weather can quickly humble me. Holding up for now!

Try strapping the shadecloth over the top to prevent flapping. I ordered black greenhouse strap like 1" wide.

Love this idea, it sure would help me too, I believe, working under a bit of shade rather than the harsh sun!

I love this video! This is the first year I've used shade cloth and I struggled with climbing plants growing into it. I love the idea of a taller structure to shade the whole garden area. I have found some inspiration - thanks Scott! Also we need an informal garden tour!! Your garden is looking absolutely lush.

Shade cloth is a game changer. Cold front coming, temps coming down to 70 at night and 90 day. Cloth is coming down soon.

You might want to check out a system called maker pipe. It is a set of connectors that lets you assemble galvanized conduit into structures like this. It is probably slightly more expensive than this, but it would probably be more durable as well.

Disease, Pest pressure, heat, derecho and hurricane has destroyed my garden this year. Going to buy some starts and try some fall tomatoes. Only thing that did well was my hot peppers.

Great content. I had to break out my 50% shade cloth to protect some of my small trees in containers. Good idea with large scale coverage for garden beds. We’re hitting 97-99° days here in southwest Louisiana and needless to say, it burns the plants up without protection.

I have to do some shade cloth this year.... the garden burned up in the 120s last summer... I gotta make the structure more hurricane friendly though... them bamboos would go flying in a storm lol

I set up a 30 percent shade cloth on my 3 raised beds. I live 25 miles west of Fort Worth and the plants were much less heat and sun stressed. I am going to move my potted citrus trees under it soon for Aug.

Nice! My citrus are doing so well under shade cloth.

Howdy Scot! Thanks for sharing! I too am on this journey and ever trying to engineer a better system. I hadn't thought of the high tunnel concept and really like the idea. Do you have any ideas for how I could do that on a concrete slab where I can't exactly drive rebar into the ground?
@newgardenroad5 ай бұрын
You could build a frame on the slab and anchor the conduit with metal fittings. It would be important to strap down the row cover and provide weight at the base for securing it through high winds 👍✨

Aluminet is a total game changer in Southern New Mexico too. I used cattle panels to make hoops and when we needed a bit more space, 8 foot tposts. I edged with ground contact 2x4s held to the ground with rebar pins through a drilled hole, and then pulled greenhouse strapping over the top and attached to the 2x4 edging, as the shadecloth flapped in the winds and ripped out any attachments. So far it has held up several seasons and allowed me to grow a lot of things like rhubarb that normally I could not in this region. I do like the extra height on that bamboo stake setup.
@newgardenroad5 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing those insights, I would like to try building a high-tunnel structure in the future.
@pecospablo5 ай бұрын
@@newgardenroad There is a video somewhere in my videos of my budget aluminet shadehouse setup. The kitchen garden one. The key I found was strapping it over the top otherwise the wind just tore it all up as it flapped. I am in a really windy area.

Way to make it look so tidy! My OCD approves😝 Love the low tunnels too. I bought a small hoop house for summer/winter shelter after my greenhouse was pummeled with hail. Do you heat your high tunnel in the winter?
@newgardenroad5 ай бұрын
Thank you! I don't truly heat the high tunnel in the winter, but will add incandescent rope lights through arctic outrbreaks.

West Texas has some strong winds. I can’t really have a weak structure.

Have you used the pex during the winter for supporting heavy weight frost cloth? I'm interested to know how it holds up with addition weight.
