If you think two is tough, try 4. I've always had one or two, my whole life, until a good friend closed his pheasant hunting ranch in Utah. A deal was made, and I ended up with two of his top dogs. These dogs hunted every day of the season, and came to me as Master Class hunters. I had the pleasure of sharing their lives, until their final days. Ben was about 4-5 years old when I got him, and was the epitome of an alpha male GSP. He hunted harder, deeper, and exponentially more effectively than any dog I had ever worked with. I'll never forget the time when planning an Arizona quail trip, a friend wanted to come along and let his cute little Brit hunt with Ben. I told him fine, but you better bring a pack frame, if you want to get your dog back out of where Ben is going to take us. These dogs are like machines on a hunt! They are not for everyone, and, in fact, I have talked many a person out of getting a GSP, because they are not for the feint of heart couch potatoes, even when they are just "cute little pups" No finer breed exists, in my not so humble opinion! Rock on!

They act like puppies for upto 2 years, and get better each year that passes. As far as hunting drive goes they can be high energy at 14 years old. My friend made a comment about how old and slow my dog looked at 13 years old, I laughed then went and got my shotgun and racked it, the dog transformed into a puppy instantly. She was a laid back dog when in the house, but never lost her passion to hunt. GPS's are truely a special breed.
@tonystornant33685 ай бұрын
Also ask for what shots they have had, are they upto date? Did they have their dew claws removed and tail docked? Hunting dogs are prone to lashed bloody tails and torn dewclaws if not removed. Sometimes they dock the tails too short which is odd looking ( 6 to 8 inches when grown sometimes is the only thing you see in the brush when they are on point).. Health history of parents is also important, worth asking. Male or female are not better than the other for choices, some females are better, some males are better, when it comes to drive and trainability. Some breeder test the dogs at 7 weeks to determine hunting ability using the Volhards puppy aptitude test. I have seen the videos and some puppies in the litter score much higher than others. This helps in finding a dogs that is focused and has natural prey drive. Some are clearly better than others and it can follow them into adulthood. However, nothing is 100%, it is only a snapshot of them at that age. For those that spend the time training the dog can have a polished dog in 1 or 2 years, even if they were not the best one at 7 months. I had one puppy for just over 1 week, the breeder said 2 vets looked at the puppies. I took my dog to my vet the first week, and she showed me the dog had an overbite, and 5 holes in the roof of her mouth from the lower teeth. My vet said you can't breed her or show her. I was concerned about training a dogs that was in pain, so I returned her to the breeder. I was bummed, so always ask what garranty you get with the dog and if anything shows up in a month or two can you return the dog? I good breeder will agree, most will not. $1000 to $2000 is a drop in the bucket for the initaial cost, you will spend thousands in the first year on other items for the dog (efence, dog house, kennel, garmin collar, toys, training equipment like pigeon coup and pigeons, food ect..). I spent well over $10,000 on my current dog in the first year on those items. The dog is inside most of the time, but I put him outside in the kennel during the day if the weather is nice. He is an awesome bird dog and companion.

When GPS's play it scares the average person, it is normal for them to be exetremely rough.however they are just playing. When I was a teen I rough played with my GPS daily. The neighbor called my mom, and said I was being too rough with the dog. My mom laughed and said that dogs loves it, he is not hurting it. I had a blue insulated flannel shirt I put on when I played with her. She got fired up everytime, and we would rough house, she would bite the flannel and I would swing her around. We both had energy we needed to spend. I would say ok we are friends now, be nice, and it was over. Other than that she was a sweet gentle well manered dog. She was my sisters dog, who lived about 100 yards away through the back yard, the dog spent all of it's time with me. She was waiting by the tree in the front yard when I got off the bus every day. My sister moved away and left the dog with me, I loved that dog, I back packed, fished and hunted, the dog was always with me.She lived 14 years, I still miss her.

I glad you did not get rid of your dog, I see so many GSP's getting rehomed. They are family, if you take the time to bond with them you will get good results. I have had many, house raised puppies and kennel raised puppies. I got female that was raised by the whole family, the kids were home schooled, and dad worked at home. She was extremely smart, I raised her during covid and worked remote at home. The second day I had her I trained her to go from two platforms, and then said kennel and she went to her crate. At 8 weeks old I was amazed at how well she did. My male puppy was 100% a kennel dog, he was a different story. He took longer to train, but I trained him with pigeons and his retrieval was and still is awesome. I has no fear of guns, or thunder. He wanted outside during a thunder and lghting storm, I found this exetremely odd, so I let him out just to see. He went outside to pee and had zero fear., I laughed and he came back in after about 1 minute. He is the most driven, athletic, cordinated GSP I have ever seen. He is a hunting machine, and a great dog. He is like a kid wen he wants something he just stares at me until I give in. For example, if he wants a toy, or some of my ice cubes in my water, he is super persistant. I tell him no and he never gives up, all part of what makes Hawkeye, Hawkeye. If a dog gets on my nerves i just laugh because that is what GSP's do. When I was a teen my GSP went with me when I was fishing, she would blow bubbles and put her nose in the water and grab my stringer of fish and pull then onto the shore. I would get mad at her and chase her away then put the fish back in the water, 5 miutes later she did it again. My point is I never allow myself to get to upset now, I just laugh when the dogs start to get on my nerves. You have to learn to enjoy them, regardless of the silly things they do. If you can do that then you can own a GSP. If not get a Lab, or dog that is a little more laid back. They are bred to be high energy outdoor hunters, if you ignore any dog, they will develop bad habits and becomne destructive when left alone. You have to make time daily to exercise them and spent time with them. Training is difficult is you have multiple people in the house, others tend to untrain the dogs, it takes time and cosistancy to get results. I have never met a GSP I did not like, they are great dogs, loyal, loving, full of life, playful, silly, funny, and great family dogs. Nice video it helps people thinking about getting one, understand, good and difficult things about GSP's

FYI - I've had my new gsp male puppy for a little over a week. (I also have a doberman girl that's 17 months.) This little guy was NOT napping at all. He was acting very aggressive within a few days of settling in. At first I was very concerned. His biting was out of control. He would not respond to conventional training. He pestered my girl constantly and she's high energy too. My Dobie resorted to grabbing his throat (gently but firmly) and press him to the floor and he still fought her, he would not submit (She's a big 85lb, tall girl). He would do the same towards me. Then I realized he was getting wired due to over-stimulation. He was raised outside in the country in gated kennels and I brought him into a big, colorful, noisy, house with two dogs (old pug) & a cat. I started kenneling him in my dark room w/soft classical music. After four hours of wake time, right when he's getting into his spinning out of control mode he goes in the kennel. So now after only a few days, these forced naps are no longer forced. He wants to sleep. He naps at least an hour & 1/4 about 3x per day. His behavior has changed drastically. He is now very loving, sweet, and a bit of a clown, and is responding to training and eating more. I'm not an expert on gsp but its obvious mine didn't know how to respond to exhaustion.

Kennel pupies are hard at first, house training takes awhile, glad you stuck with it. It is best to separate the dogs during trainng, and do short sessions often. There are tons of videos to reference, remember the first 6 months is critical to deleope the dog to overcome unwanted long term issues. Train often, they love the interaction, and are willing to learn. They are smart dogs.

All about time and training, the dog might have been a total pain, but in the end I blame her. It is a cold person that can shoot a dog over frustration. She is a total idiot, who would make it public they shot their dog, she has a poor character. My father had a wiemweiner, that bit the kids, he gave it to a state tropper and it bite his wife when she was feeding it, the tropper came home and shot it. That I understand, the dogs time was up. Overbreeding can cause bad temperment. I have never seen a GPS that was not friendly after meeting someone. they are naturally coutious at first, but warm up quickly.

You are so right. My Bullet is also stubborn. He comes around though. He hates when I'm mad at him. I love him so much. He is a rescue. I have never had GSP until Bullet. I had several labs. I loved Cash my lab before i got Bullet. Was so smart and would not leave my side. His previous owner was married to my first cousin and he killed himself. So Oneday Cash jumped in my jeep and would not get out. So a few days later i called my cousin and told her i was really enjoying him. So she asked if i wanted him and she said they were not able to give him time. I thought he was needy. Omg if Bullet does not get my attention plan on him doing something else and its never good.lol. i love him so much. I had his daughter he had with a full lab for a year the 2 together were terrorists. It was because they each wanted me. I had no gf or roomate so it was rough. But i had a friend who wanted to get her daughters a puppy and i said they love Sassy and shes still a puppy just a huge one. Those girls almost rubbed her fur off Christmas Eve when they got her. Ill never forget her tirning around as they were leaving as if to say thank you. so happy happy ending and i still get to see her. The mix is beauty. She looks like a black and white lab. Shes also just one black eye. Not the mask like Bullet. I love you videos. In fact i got ball time sorted out after watching you. 2 balls what a genius idea.lol

My female GSP held down full grown Great Danes as a pup... that was discouraged. Finally got her to slow down as an adult. Now she's the perfect trainer for aggressive dogs. She is social & friendly until another dog gets aggressive & then it's over quickly since all she wants to do is hunt. Maybe I got lucky, but my GSP is a kind monster. Her favorite friends are pit bulls heavier than her, oddly the 2 breeds play the same way.

I thought I was an expert dog trainer. Till our current (1st GSP.) Yeah you can force leash training late, but these dogs will never be happy on a leash. On beds, I think it breaks their souls keeping them away from the pack sleeping. It's a thing, having them sleep w/ your kids is the best thing. Second to that is prolly time on the couch w/ you & a clear bed @ night. They won't like it, they're cuddle robots when not hunting.

Maybe an odd question, but what genders are they? I’m getting a male GSP and in roughly a year I want to get a GWP to accompany him. I want to keep my male intact for as long as is healthy (I would like a junior, I don’t want to breed dogs for a living it’s not my cup of tea). My question is are the mixed gender and both fixed? Or are they both fixed males/ females? I want them to be friendly with each other and ultimately don’t care about fixing my male after he’s grown. Cute video by the way!

@@Tammy_Bashore good to know. Is there a significant age difference or are they just good boys? I imagine with proper training there shouldn’t be any issues between “siblings” but I know that keeping them intact has its pros and cons temperament wise. Hi Tammy. My family and our dog 3 y.o. female GSP live in a warm climate. Our coldest day in winter is usually up to - 6 degrees Celsius. Next year we are planning to move to Calgary (Canada). I wonder how GSPs handle frosty weather when it's -25 or -30 degrees Celsius outside. Of course, it is possible to put on a coat on your dog, but what about the rest of the body parts? Ears, feet, respiratory system, etc? I would really appreciate your opinion.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I took our 18 month old GSP hiking in the Georgia mountains for a couple of days. The temps were in the high 20's to low 40's. Where we were hiking there were numerous streams and waterfalls to explore. Mika (the dog, not my wife 🙂) loves the water and was in and out of the streams. For the most part she did not get wet past her belly, except for dunking her head in the water to grab sticks. As usual, nothing slowed her down and she never appeared to be in any discomfort. We did have little coat on her. How cold is too cold? When should we have the coat on her and when should we be keeping her out of the water? We live in Florida, so this won't be a frequent occurrence.
