I actually never thought about the driver inside the train.... I also had no idea people did this so often. I thought it would be like once in a while someone not paying attention or whatever.

If the lights and the sirens are all going off, and you are still unfazed while crossing the literal rail line, it's just natural selection at that point

Is KiwiRail going to try harder to take freight off the road? Maybe put some incentives in place to gain more freight. I'm an ex Loco Engineer and have seen a steady decline in the carrying of freight over the years

You’ve gotta be brainless to try and out run a train… For the sake of seconds? To not have the patience to let the train pass… yeah you must really be brainless.

On my driver's test in 1975, we had to cross a set of railroad tracks. I carefully drove over them. The instructor yelled at me that I didn't even look for trains. I said that the signals weren't on. He said what if the signal is broke? 49 years later I slow down and look both ways for trains before crossing. One kid from my highschool died on the train tracks, walking. Many years ago we took a train from Milwaukee to Denver. An hour out of Denver, the train slammed on the brakes and struck a car on the tracks. It had been parked there. A prank? I don't know but I remember we sat on the tracks for over 3 hours and the stink from the burned brakes was horrible and filled the cars. It was hard to breathe but we couldn't leave the train even though we were literally in the middle of nowhere, early morning,1980s.

With no more sabertooth tigers waiting for us, no poisonous snakes in many parts of the world and being on top of the food chain, we have lost our sense for danger. Some people will pay for this with their lives. I just feel very sad for the train drivers who need to cope with that situation.

I almost got hit by a metro in my car a few months because it was my first days driving, I was confused and didn't pay enough attention. I had watched this video beforehand, and it made me feel so bad about it, not only for me but for the metro driver and it made me much, much more careful going on train/metro tracks

I mean at some point it's your own stupidity. Can't even feel bad for them. Some of them don't even look or look and go anyway. I mean it's fine if the lights are on and you don't see it but still hurry across because you know it's coming. Is it really saving that much time?

I'm sorry. I got questions: A near miss means the train nearly missed the person, and therefore the person got crushed and pulverized under the train. A near hit means the person nearly got hit, and so they get to go on with their lives, being nearly hit by industrial equipment, which Î assume is their thing. I'm not a native english speaker, so it's all very confusing to me... thank you for your pacience! :)
@MatHennessy9 күн бұрын
Near miss means they were nearly hit. It’s all the same, never heard of that
@SoupEarthOfficial3 күн бұрын
That’s a good point actually, but by near miss they mean they missed but it was very close to not being a miss, so it’s a near miss I guess, but near hit would be better to say.

My stomach turned at this. A friend lost her cousin at our local railway crossing, the level crossing was closed permanently afterwards. My father would sometimes come home in a “don’t come near me” mood from his railway job, told me why one day when I was an adult. He was a Station Master and had to clear the tracks after a puppy was hit by a train on that particular day. Not long after he came home in a worst condition, had to help locate an arm after a drunk guy had decided the tracks were the best place to have a sleep.

I dont live in a country with a railway (doesn’t have one anymore, anyway), but overseas I’m super careful w train crossings. Trains are huge and fast and it’s insane to me that someone would try to cross a rail crossing as if you’re just jaywalking across a road. Trains can’t jam brake the way cars do and trains p much alw have the right of way as a result. But I do imagine having to wait a whole minute for a train to pass can become tiresome on the daily. Still though, major crossings could probably do w automatic gates
