An excellent video - but I do kinda disagree with your conclusion... Even though, Capitalism is the source of a lot of evil, I wouldn't make it responsible here. You've done some excellent research and went through all the aspects of cutting a trailer with all the people being involved along the process (editors, creative directors, producers, music, film makers, marketing departments at the studio/distributor, MPAA ... and the TEST audience). And I think that Phil made an excellent point when he mentioned that if the audience is presented two cuts, one more teasing and one more revealing, the audience tends to prefer the version that's more revealing. So, in my humble opinion... the (big) reason why trailers are so spoilery is that the audience ITSELF wants it to be like that. This is the source of the problem. Then marketing execs take the audiences' word and adjust the trailer accordingly(?!). Yes, the aim is to make as much money as possible. It's business. And the test audience is surely not the sole decision maker in the process, but their opinion weights in heavily. It's a bit of a conflict of interests within the audience. Some like to see more, others like to see less. The ones who like to see less is a loud minority (it seems) - or at least, they're not attending in test screenings...

as I see it, focusing the testing on retention and always preferring the safe option, which stem from the market trends mentioned in the video, is dumbing the audience down for a lack of a better term - the audience does not always blindly prefer the already paved road, and the need to prioritize retention for marketing purposes skews the testing questionnaires and results, as discussed with Philip Daccord with flashy montages as the example. I strongöy believe that larger audiences are way more receptive to innovation and creativity than marketing execs give them credit for, and that capitalism (moreso its specific 21st century brand and tech) and the effects it has had on movies as an art form is to blame for the people working in the industry being backed into this corner :)

Lestat is not "confusing" at all in the series. He's just more complex and deeper. He has more nuance. I don't get a character that chooses a life long partner and after said partner doesn't see eternal life as a gift just whines about it like the Lestat in the 90's film. Sam Reid's Lestat is abusive, but he's also seductive. It's an improvement. It's so frustrating that people need to have it in black and white.

My favourite trailer was the Nightcrawler (Jake Gyllenhaal movie, not anything to do with comics) teaser After seeing the movie, a lot of what was shown was in a dorky different context than the trailer implied but that was ok - it still gave the right feeling about the movie overall

New to your Channel and just starting the video, want to say the first thought I had when I saw your thumbnail was wow the lighting is pretty, the second thought was it’s kind of ironic/poetic to talk about movie trailers which are 1-2 min snippets to get you hooked on a movie in the span of a movie runtime😂🙌

As someone from suburban Southern California, a standard matinee costs around $11. I was surprised to hear those averages in the 15-20 dollar range because here that is reserved for IMAX or other specialty viewing.

from what i've noticed it seems like non-fancy screenings are less and less, and the movie industry is trying to even out the decline in moviegoing with driving up the profit per person, hence the insane prices - but that's an outsider observation i'll probably not be able to 100% verify any time soon

I've been a cinephile for more than 35 years. So at this point, I have a very good idea of whether or not I like a movie based solely off of who produced the film, what studios are involved, what actors are starring and what writers are behind the script. To that effect, if there's a film that I know that I'm going to be interested in, (in an age where we have teasers for the teaser trailer, a teaser trailer, then usually two or three main trailers before a final trailer), I will only ever watch the teaser and the initial trailer drop. Everything beyond that, (to include trailer breakdowns and deep dives), I leave alone. Because once you get into the second or third trailers, you will inevitably be given far more information than you want. The ONLY exception I make to this rule is if a red band trailer is dropped, in which case I will always seek it out as I consider red bands to be the definitive version of any trailer. The first 3-minute trailer should be more than enough for you to know whether or not you're interested in something. At some point, avoiding spoilers comes down to ones on self-control. (Unless, of course, you're dealing with those KZbin a**holes who insist on putting visual spoilers in their thumbnails and having the title of their videos be a literal spoiler for the film. In which case, you will be spoiled just by perusing your KZbin recommendations because some a**hat wanted a clickbait title.) AND ON A SIDE NOTE: I collect movie ticket stubs. I actually have a framed collage of movie tickets spanning 10 years and two continents. So I can tell you for a fact that I haven't been to a movie in more than a decade where I paid less than $12 USD unless I was on a military post at the dollar theater or I used my military discount during matinee times at a less expensive movie house.

Thanks for having me on, shasha! You did a great job covering the topic and it was good to hear Dave and Phil's insights ^_^ As someone who went to the movies before the recliner seats, I'd say it was a worse experience overall. Seats in bad shape, sound wasn't as good, and if you saw a movie early in its run you had to show up an hour or more early to line up so you could run to the good seats when they opened the theater to your screening. When I first learned about movie theaters that let you purchase a specific seat, I couldn't have been more excited (and was fine paying the extra cost). But the extra cost hurts that much more now when I go to a theater where I have to tell the staff the projector is out of focus or something is wrong with the sound -_- When I was a kid, a matinee at my local theater cost $4.50 and the full ticket price was around $8. But adjusted for inflation that's around $12 for the matinee and $21 for the full price O_O
@shashatainment27 күн бұрын
thanks for helping me wrap my head around the topic - interviewing you was a pleasure :) growing up in eastern europe in the 2000s, i‘ve only ever seen non-assigned seating at summer camp and those nice old people holiday resorts so learning it is a real option was a big shock (and we only got the gentrification chairs in like mid 2010s, but that was in big cities), but (from my amateur research) those screenings seem to be the cheapest so i see the appeal!

At 8:54, Derek Lieu talks about how people remix pop songs for trailers and he included Knives Out as an example that reminded me of Matrix 4's trailer. The movie was mid as hell but the trailer remixed white rabbit by Jefferson Airpd made me obsessed with trailer remixes forever. I listen to 2WEI a group that produces that type of music
