This summer I decided to watch every vampire movie ever created, and I was talking with my research advisor about it... I mentioned how many lesbians exist in vampire movies, especially in the 1960s/70s, and he explained that at the time being a lesbian was considered viral, something you could become ill with, so it was exploited in horror films about catching vampirism (lesbians being equally as terrifying as sanguine creatures).
@shashatainment5 ай бұрын
yes, being a lesbian has been other’ed and portrayed as a threat quite often! as far as i remember jessica kellgren-fozard discusses that in the video i put in the extras playlist in the description! would you mind sharing your research question/hypothesis?? cause i think that’s very interesting!!
@AC-dk4fp5 ай бұрын
To be honest I think its more just that Carmilla gave film makers a 'literary' excuse for making exploitation films. British censors put a stop to Hammer portraying Lesbian relationships in their Carmilla sequels the moment the films stopped being adaptations. You only really find a lot of them if you go to every European country looking for them. There are a lot of Lesbian coded characters who are 'vampiric' in a more metaphorical sense that fit the demonisation explanation but sometimes it seems Lesbian Vampires get to be more sympathetic than living ones. 'The Hunger' is an 80s film and has a much clearer infectious lesbianism angle than the Carmilla novella or most of the adaptations (I haven't seen the Italian ones which is most of them).

Thank you for mentioning Polidori, I feel like he's often overshadowed by Stoker. I would like to add two more works to the early queer vampire lore. Christabel by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is an unfinished poem about some kind of demonic woman who seduces another woman. Since it's unfinished, it's unclear if she is a vampire, but Carmilla (Christabel being often called inspiration for it) is explicitly about lesbian vampire. Both were published before Dracula, Christabel even before The Vampyre! Byron knew Coleridge, having visited him and Wordsworth when there were living together in Lake District. Highly recommend reading both Christabel and Carmilla, they're very similar, I feel like Carmilla is what Christabel would look like if Coleridge had finished his poem. Gothic, erotic and also pretty gay 🖤🦇
@shashatainment5 ай бұрын
yesss, carmilla is very important, but i kinda group it with the lesbian vampire trope and only mention it at the end :) thank u for laying it all out so eloquently and clearly!
@AC-dk4fp5 ай бұрын
I subscribe to the theory that Carmilla was an attempt to provide an ending to Christabel but the ending of Christabel implies that Geraldine just used the eponymous heroine to gain access to her dad so I'm not sure she counts as a Lesbian Vampire. Le Fanu doesn't use any of the plot elements set up but not employed in Christabel he just reworks the basic premise. But I'm a mostly straight guy trying to write a Christabel adaptation in spite of thinking animated mummies and skeletons are cooler than vampires so what do I know.

One of my favourite things about bi people and vampires is that the first time (or one of the first times) the word 'bisexual' was used in a video game was in 2001, in metal gear solid 2: sons of liberty. In the game, Solid Snake is describing a man that is pale, imortal, has great speed and reflexes and drinks blood, the man in question is called Vamp. Because he's a vampire, right? No, its because he's bi. I find it amazing that the first time someone was explictely called bisexual in a video game, the guy was a vampire and in the most bisexual game franchise I've ever played.

I got it suggested. Your searching it out and commenting did it. The system worked! This video fell into the lap of a vampire loving bisexual. @@shashatainment I'm so glad you asked. Basically, vampires came from humans, so their need to continuously feed would be the same as _our_ continuous need to feed. The average human has around 10 pints of blood. However, the average human stomach can hold about a quart of liquid. That's roughly half a pint. I'm assuming a vampire can only drink fresh blood, and _isn't_ keeping a pantry of victims, and probably has spit with anti-coagulation as a feature. (By the way, you can lose about 14% of your blood before it becomes an issue.) The initial feeding won't kill you, the being left to bleed out _will._ 3+ meals a day base line to keep healthy, plus snacks will be at _least_ 3 people a day. This is why they're such a problem and have to go, because small Romanian villages don't have the population to support a vampire.
@shashatainment5 ай бұрын
@@wareforcoin5780 oh, thank u for elaborating! it’s such an interesting though which can be applied to different vampire canons and that will give us different outcomes, as well as factoring in the enhanced features like physical abilities which would probably require more than an average human

1:14:31 - Superstrength, at least, has been a part of vampire lore since the original Dracula novel; I am certain that Dracula was noted as having lifted heavy boxes of dirt with remarkable ease that multiple humans together had been struggling to move. I do not currently recall if Dracula also had superspeed or not, but he might have been noted once or twice as having moved from one place to another very quickly too(I would need to reread to recall for sure). Lol But both have very definitely been a part of typical/popular vampire lore for sure ever since Anne Rice's _Vampire Chronicles_ if not even earlier than that. I could list so many other things before Twilight in which vampires have both superspeed and superstrength, among many other things.😁😁

I think people love the charisma the clasic Vampire has. Count Dracula was heterosexual but he speak with a calm and soft tone of voice with both boys and girls that makes you think "Is he's hitting on me or just beeing friendly?" Same with Carmilla of Styria that was strictly lesbian when she bites her maidens and Laura but could mask her preference among everyone else.

Same. lol. But the video was very well done and interesting. Before I clicked I was totally going to mentally rant about how MCR isn't emo and Gerard/MCR wasn't exactly cishet nor queer-baiting but both fronts were covered so I'm happy. I think this is the first youtube video I've come across that discusses the nuances of emo/MCR so thoroughly and accurately.

1:13:00 as a Brazilian I feel obligated to let people know that 9/11 also lead to the death of Portugal’s portuguese. a growing issue in portuguese homes has been the fact that young kids are now adopting Brazilian Portuguese due to the videos made by KZbinr Lucas Neto. Lucas Neto is a Brazilian content creator that makes content for children, and he’s essentially a nepo brother - he only got his start on KZbin because of his brother, Felipe Neto, one of the most well known and successful Brazilian KZbinrs of all time. And Felipe Neto only got his start on KZbin because he wanted to bitch about Twilight. So 9/11 is now responsible for Brazilians finally paying back Portugal for years of colonialism lmao

This was so good! I didn't even think about Jennifer's Body as a vampire story but it really is! A lot to think about there! What We Do In The Shadows really speaks to me because the queer characters aren't "good representation." They're messy. They're complicated and even outright bad people. They suck at communication. Their polycule is gross. They're embezzling and doing insurance fraud. They're bisexual idiots. They're just like me fr.
@shashatainment5 ай бұрын
thank you :) i also like the representation in wwdits because it’s not the Oh My God This Character Is Gay type of spiel and their existense in the show and does not revolve around queerness - they’re fully fleshed out messy legends

Anne Rices vampires were asexual. But they were seemingly bi/pan romantic in general tho. I was really upset at the asexual erasure in the IWTV amc version, but they did the swap to bi representation of them well so I ended up not as mad at the end of season 2.
@shashatainment4 ай бұрын
idk if they can be classified as asexual if they still engage in sexual acts and feel lust, albeit in another form - anne rice practically equates biting to sex (i’m not trying to refute your point, i generally don’t know that much about ace people and don’t feel comfortable judging as someone who does not belong to the group), but they could probably be interpreted as ace, and i would looove to see ace representation on the show

Great video, but I'm kinda sad you didn't talk about Carmilla. Maybe it's because lesbian media and not a bi one, but it inspired Dracula and furthered connection 'vampires = queerness'. Also hii from another Eastern European who loves vampires
@shashatainment5 ай бұрын
hii! yes, i didn’t go into carmilla since i consider it to be more influential when it comes to the lesbian vampire trope :) and i thought bram stoker’s life context woulf be more important for dracula!

The whole Twilight section frankly made me feel so vindicated, because I seriously cannot fathom or understand this bizarre "reclamation" and nostalgia for Twilight that has been happening. Anti-Twilight tangent aside, yes to all of this video. All of it, the outfits, the topics discussed and overall conclusions.
