I loved dressing up as a Vampire for Halloween when I was really young, I grew up watching IWTV from 8 yo, got into MyChem, Twilight, True Blood and other vampire series around 12-13. I was also obsessed with Evanescence at 8 (Ty daredevil soundtrack). Nowwww WWDITS is one of my favorite shows/movies! My boyfriend and I are huge WWDITS fans.

This summer I decided to watch every vampire movie ever created, and I was talking with my research advisor about it... I mentioned how many lesbians exist in vampire movies, especially in the 1960s/70s, and he explained that at the time being a lesbian was considered viral, something you could become ill with, so it was exploited in horror films about catching vampirism (lesbians being equally as terrifying as sanguine creatures).
@shashatainment
@shashatainment Ай бұрын
yes, being a lesbian has been other’ed and portrayed as a threat quite often! as far as i remember jessica kellgren-fozard discusses that in the video i put in the extras playlist in the description! would you mind sharing your research question/hypothesis?? cause i think that’s very interesting!!
@AC-dk4fp

To be honest I think its more just that Carmilla gave film makers a 'literary' excuse for making exploitation films. British censors put a stop to Hammer portraying Lesbian relationships in their Carmilla sequels the moment the films stopped being adaptations. You only really find a lot of them if you go to every European country looking for them. There are a lot of Lesbian coded characters who are 'vampiric' in a more metaphorical sense that fit the demonisation explanation but sometimes it seems Lesbian Vampires get to be more sympathetic than living ones. 'The Hunger' is an 80s film and has a much clearer infectious lesbianism angle than the Carmilla novella or most of the adaptations (I haven't seen the Italian ones which is most of them).

Thank you for mentioning Polidori, I feel like he's often overshadowed by Stoker. I would like to add two more works to the early queer vampire lore. Christabel by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is an unfinished poem about some kind of demonic woman who seduces another woman. Since it's unfinished, it's unclear if she is a vampire, but Carmilla (Christabel being often called inspiration for it) is explicitly about lesbian vampire. Both were published before Dracula, Christabel even before The Vampyre! Byron knew Coleridge, having visited him and Wordsworth when there were living together in Lake District. Highly recommend reading both Christabel and Carmilla, they're very similar, I feel like Carmilla is what Christabel would look like if Coleridge had finished his poem. Gothic, erotic and also pretty gay 🖤🦇

@AC-dk4fp

I subscribe to the theory that Carmilla was an attempt to provide an ending to Christabel but the ending of Christabel implies that Geraldine just used the eponymous heroine to gain access to her dad so I'm not sure she counts as a Lesbian Vampire. Le Fanu doesn't use any of the plot elements set up but not employed in Christabel he just reworks the basic premise. But I'm a mostly straight guy trying to write a Christabel adaptation in spite of thinking animated mummies and skeletons are cooler than vampires so what do I know.

One of my favourite things about bi people and vampires is that the first time (or one of the first times) the word 'bisexual' was used in a video game was in 2001, in metal gear solid 2: sons of liberty. In the game, Solid Snake is describing a man that is pale, imortal, has great speed and reflexes and drinks blood, the man in question is called Vamp. Because he's a vampire, right? No, its because he's bi. I find it amazing that the first time someone was explictely called bisexual in a video game, the guy was a vampire and in the most bisexual game franchise I've ever played.

I got it suggested. Your searching it out and commenting did it. The system worked! This video fell into the lap of a vampire loving bisexual. @@shashatainment I'm so glad you asked. Basically, vampires came from humans, so their need to continuously feed would be the same as _our_ continuous need to feed. The average human has around 10 pints of blood. However, the average human stomach can hold about a quart of liquid. That's roughly half a pint. I'm assuming a vampire can only drink fresh blood, and _isn't_ keeping a pantry of victims, and probably has spit with anti-coagulation as a feature. (By the way, you can lose about 14% of your blood before it becomes an issue.) The initial feeding won't kill you, the being left to bleed out _will._ 3+ meals a day base line to keep healthy, plus snacks will be at _least_ 3 people a day. This is why they're such a problem and have to go, because small Romanian villages don't have the population to support a vampire.
@shashatainment
@shashatainment Ай бұрын
@@wareforcoin5780 oh, thank u for elaborating! it’s such an interesting though which can be applied to different vampire canons and that will give us different outcomes, as well as factoring in the enhanced features like physical abilities which would probably require more than an average human

1:13:00 as a Brazilian I feel obligated to let people know that 9/11 also lead to the death of Portugal’s portuguese. a growing issue in portuguese homes has been the fact that young kids are now adopting Brazilian Portuguese due to the videos made by KZbinr Lucas Neto. Lucas Neto is a Brazilian content creator that makes content for children, and he’s essentially a nepo brother - he only got his start on KZbin because of his brother, Felipe Neto, one of the most well known and successful Brazilian KZbinrs of all time. And Felipe Neto only got his start on KZbin because he wanted to bitch about Twilight. So 9/11 is now responsible for Brazilians finally paying back Portugal for years of colonialism lmao

I think people love the charisma the clasic Vampire has. Count Dracula was heterosexual but he speak with a calm and soft tone of voice with both boys and girls that makes you think "Is he's hitting on me or just beeing friendly?" Same with Carmilla of Styria that was strictly lesbian when she bites her maidens and Laura but could mask her preference among everyone else.

Anne Rices vampires were asexual. But they were seemingly bi/pan romantic in general tho. I was really upset at the asexual erasure in the IWTV amc version, but they did the swap to bi representation of them well so I ended up not as mad at the end of season 2.
@shashatainment
@shashatainment 22 күн бұрын
idk if they can be classified as asexual if they still engage in sexual acts and feel lust, albeit in another form - anne rice practically equates biting to sex (i’m not trying to refute your point, i generally don’t know that much about ace people and don’t feel comfortable judging as someone who does not belong to the group), but they could probably be interpreted as ace, and i would looove to see ace representation on the show

On the subject of Mormons having vampire discourse: The author of one of the most beloved and famous D&D modules ever, Curse of Strahd, is a mormon, and they have {in my opinion} rancid takes about vampires! And they appropriated and misrepresented the Roma for their vampire content! If I had a nickel for every time a mormon wrote a book about vampires where they horribly misused and stereotyped an oppressed racial or ethnic minority for ✨flavor,✨I'd have two nickels, and that's not a lot of nickels, but it's weird it happened twice!

Not sure how Twilight can be said to have 'made vampires straight' outside of it being the center of a moral panic around the sexuality of women (teenagers and housewives). Its vampires were considered pretty "gay" by lots of men who had similar opinions about the characters 'not being real vampires' as the presenter of the Twilight section of this video has. The vampires are heterosexual but the fandom isn't entirely. The fragile masculine backlash against Twilight seems more influential on perspectives on vampire lore than the actual contents of the series themselves (which I'm not that familiar with). A lot of people who'd maybe watched one horror film suddenly claimed to be experts on what vampires 'should' be without having actually read any books on the subject and that's left a long legacy. Many films were made with anti-twilight intent to reclaim vampires 'for the (straight) boys' even if they were reacting to a technically heterosexual book/film series. Its kind of weird how the culture Edward the culture simultaneously sees as a stalker who corrupts young girls to romanticise abuse, a frivilous temptation that makes adult housewives fall into childish emotional displays that distract them from their motherly duties and as a chaste embodiment of toxic purity culture. No matter your fears about American sexuality there's an interpretation of Twilight you can hate on. Super speed and strength are pretty common vampire tropes in literature and role playing games going back to at least Dracula and Carmilla. Its only movies that made vampires slow and wimpy and after having watched some of the really pathetic vampires you find in low budget films the first Twilight film is a breath of fresh air in having actually formidable vampires. You can just as easily take the Underworld Franchise and say its characters are barely vampires. At least the Cullens have to constantly deal with bloodlust and the fear of the damage they can do if they lose control is narratively realised. "Sexy Male Vampire Love Interest for Straight Self Insert Heroine" has a much longer history than the 2000s paranormal Romance boom. Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's 14 volume series Saint-Germain started in 1978 and was a major trope maker for the immortal romantic hero. The author was a major convention attendee and helped popularise the legendarily terrible 'Eye of Argon' which as an important predecessor for ironic readings of My Immortal.

hi! it seems like you did not pay attention to what Anya discussed in her portion, and I'm gonna try and address your concerns: -idk what fandom has to do here, since Anya is talking about the text of the Twilight saga (in book and movie form) - the masculine backlash was to perceived femininity and the saga being framed as For Girls, not to supposed "gay" vampires, that are not really present there - the Twilight vamps are overtly straight and straight-laced overall. the "straightification" of the vampire, however, is not a fully serious title, which i thought was pretty clear. -as she mentions, if you dig deeper, you can suppose that Edward is effectively framed as gay by the narrative within the Law of Chastity -"Its kind of weird how the culture Edward simultaneously sees as a stalker who corrupts young girls to romanticise abuse [...] and as a chaste embodiment of toxic purity culture" - these are not contradictory statements, he can be both a stalker and a sexually repressed man, as is discussed in the vid's chapter -super speed and strength are not in the first echelon of vampire trope (yes, they are present in media, but they are typically overall supernatural traits, not specific to JUST vampires), and detecting someone is a vampire based on just them is silly. also, this is a joke within the context of the vid, idk why you decided to focus on that -nowhere in the chapter Anya says that Twilight was the First Book To Ever Do It , but its influence on pop culture is enormous, hence why we discuss it
@AC-dk4fp
@AC-dk4fp Ай бұрын
@@shashatainmentThese were more comments than concerns or criticisms. 'Gay' was a descriptor being used which is still homophobic even when its as you say not about literal queerness. Actual analysis of Twilight's portrayal of sexuality was not an important part of the anti-Twilight backlash. Perceptions had more importance than the content. The "first echelon" of the vampire trope is a matter of preference. The super speed demonstration makes as much sense as a visual demonstration of power in context as any other. The point of the scene is that Edward is an exageration of the threat of male sexuality so he demonstrates his superior physical strength to show that. Pretty much every vampire trope is just generally supernatural, immortality, weakness to holiness, bound by arbitrary rules, limitations on where they can enter, even drinking blood isn't vampire specific. Folkloric vampires are basically just a subtype of Witch or ghost anyway and Dracula borrows a lot from Gaelic fairy lore. Edward's sexual repression is partly about a woman's fears of unrestrained male threat which goes beyond simple critiques of the harmful aspects of the extremes of American purity culture. The contradictory elements of the Twilight backlash could be synthesised into a whole but that's not the impression I got at the time.
@shashatainment
@shashatainment Ай бұрын
@@AC-dk4fp well, yes, i don’t think misogyny and homophobia enjoyers were particularly dissecting the vampire sexuality of the series, but misogyny was definitely more prevalent in the backlash, regarless of whether the word “gay” was used as an insult by those opposed to Twilight, since when used in a “ew that’s gay” way (as a synonym for shitty) it is more often than not not referring to actual queerness. the backlash from überstraights is not what the video is dealing with. and i still have to disagree on the typical and main vampire tropes - western media discussed throughout the vid, especially that which is part of pop-culture, has pretty neat canons of what a vampire is - an un-dead who drinks blood from either animals or people, and superstrength and speed are not species-defining qualities, but everyone, of course, is entitled to their own opinion i don’t know what critiques of american purity culture you are talking about since the chapter specifically deals with mormonism (a religion that the author is a part of) and how it influences his sexual expression. i honestly have no idea where you got the “fear of unrestrained male threat” part from, but then again - it is a piece of media open to interpretation, so u can read it however u want to/deem right
@AC-dk4fp
@AC-dk4fp Ай бұрын
@@shashatainment Its an element of Edward's sexual repression that isn't mentioned in your video. Twilight wasn't only popular with Mormons and Purity culture was a heavy feature of American life in the Bush administration. The undead-ness and supernatural nature of vampires is pretty negotiable in media. If undead means you've died and returned to a form of half-life there are tons of vampire films that openly contradict that. Turning into a bat would be more vampire specific but most Hollywood vampires can't shapeshift at all to stop the werewolves being redundant. The most prevalent vampire trope is having a scene where they call other vampire tropes inaccurate. Some people reacted to the film version of What We do in the Shadows with confusion that the vampires were parodying tropes that barely existed in media they'd actually seen.

1)Garlic and silver are antibacterial. Your DNA is affected by your micro bacteria within your own body. The micro bacteria evolve into a probiotic that antibacterial materials can harm probiotic micro bacteria. 2) Blood contains stem cells, and under proper conditions can be used to prolong life. For example, fetal bovine plasma protein was used during WW2 to help heal troops to the speed recovery. Unfortunately every time the DNA devides telomers at the end of your DNA gets a little shorter and so when you get older your body starts to take shortcuts and prioritize it's functioning. By extension of the telomers at the end of your DNA your DNA becomes immortal. Certain micro bacteria can extend the DNA telomers and in combination with the proper stem cells you can become immortal. That doesn't mean that you can't die of other causes but not by biological causes. For example if you walk into traffic and get hit by a car and it runs over your head, well congratulations your dead. There's probably no way of bringing you back. 3) Though the blood of human children has the DNA stem cells you would need there's plenty of other possibilities for substitution. For example sheep. When we first came here we wanted sheep instead of humans because humans are more useful and we needed to breed with. Goats where a second choice and so we decided to develop the religious politics of culture to "sacrifice " lambs for the Jewish and Christianity and goats for the Satanist. We can use bison, Lama, camels, deer, wolf or other. It doesn't matter. Even jelly fish! We have no intention or interest in running your life and we don't care about your politics. We just want to survive and thrive and if we can help you along than that's cool too. We just want to coexist. Please accept us.
