As bad as Jimmy Saville was, yall have to admit that ad really worked
@HobartBloke4 ай бұрын
It is a highly professional job, making legit selling points crisply. Saville, toned down, is an unexpected but convincing pitch man. Now we think this was one more instance of his genius for hiding in plain sight and conning people, but he was being sincere for once: he really was a devoted rail user. BR made some fine ads when its fortunes were at a nadir under the car-loving Mrs Thatcher. A favourite of mine is the Sevenoaks Grand Prix, with Jackie Stewart (road) losing to Hattie Jacques (train).

Why does her not paying mean everyone else has to pay more? That doesn't make sense - the £200 fine is more than the licence would have cost anyway so it's actually her who paid more. When this PIF was made the licence fee for colour was between £25 (July 1978) and £34 (November 1979).

Seatbelt mounting points were mandatory in 1965. Front seatbelts had to be fitted in cars from 1967 onwards. Some higher end cars even had seatbelt warnings, even though wearing them was optional. Even in the 1960s learner drivers and the police were belting up as a matter of course. There was also a whole decade of clunk click and other PIFs like this. So why weren't seatbelts compulsory to _wear_ until January 1983? That seems awfully late. Shouldn't the law have changed sooner given all post-1967 cars had front belts anyway?

TV licence wasn't a lot cheaper back then, everyone earned less, the BBC did and produced much less. In the 1980s you were paying the modern equivalent of roughly £130 in 2023 money and all you got was 2 channels that shut down at 11pm and 4 radio stations. TV was cheaper to produce back then and the BBC didn't have the iPlayer to pay for either. Today the licence fee is actually the best value it's ever been.

In those days, BBC 2 used to literally close down during the day as well - even BBC 1 often played the test card between the end of the afternoon schools programmes and the afternoon repeat of Play School - or play it for 15 minutes ahead of a programme in Welsh! If BBC 2 did come on in the day, it did so for cricket or horse racing!
