Thanks for watching Rick. This one isn’t a great fit for me but I’m trying to make it work and acclimate to it anyway because it belonged to my friend who passed away back in ‘20. I’m going to try some different pickups shortly, I ordered a few sets to experiment with, And it still needs fret work and general attention from a luthier.

For the most detail please see a fairly recent rig rundown: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHjLi2tphMhlhLssi=70PXoxYjOA8MQJ7N In this video I’m playing through my entire usual live rig but at much lower volume than at a gig. Amp is a late 60s vibrolux reverb, overdrives are either a ts9 or plimsoul, delay is an ancient Ibanez DDL. modulation used at the end is an ancient Ibanez CS10. The board has a lot on it, but most of it is bypassed and brought in and out of the chain.

I have the same guitar, but year 2000. I moved away from Strats for 20 years in favor of Les Pauls. What did it for me with the SRV strat is the neck - WOW!

A Y2K SRV sounds cool. The SRV neck carve is definitely loved by many and seen as the best part of the guitar. Myself I’ve have to work at it to get acclimated. I’m hoping once I get it refretted and am hopefully able to set it up closer to the way I need it, it will be a better fit for me. 🤞

Hey thanks! Just Experimenting a little and trying to enjoy the journey. I took the shotgun approach with the other guitar I bought from Kenny’s parents, everything worked out great, but Kenny and I both found it much more comfortable to play than the SRV, from the get go, so it was easier all the way around.

Nice video Rich, I hope that pickup configuration works out for you. I've played one of those SRV Strats (in the mid 90s) once and I too didn't like the neck, I'm not sure but I think that was a guitar Stevie was working on with Fender before his untimely death. I know Steve #1 Strat was a 62' which probably had a "C" shape neck profile, he later had to replace the neck with another early 60's Strat neck, which also probably had a similar profile to the first neck. The underwound pickups I feel sound the best, there's a lot of affordable well made sets you could probably find on ebay. I have played around with budget friendly pickups and I really like the Wilkinson 60's pickups if you are ever curious about an inexpensive pickup to play around with. Anyways, I enjoyed the video talking about different setups, pickups, etc. That's just "talkin shop" to me👍 I do think that setting the height the way you had it where you can hear the volume and clarity difference in the picking attack is a smart choice, the volume pot also comes in handy for softening the tone. Enjoyed and liked the video Rich, I hope you have a great weekend! Keep on rockin!🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶

It’s all about the whole combination (especially the player, moreso than anything else). That’s the great thing about it. There is Still so much to do to this guitar but I’m trying to enjoy the whole journey on this one. I also got along poorly with sss pickups for a long time, then something suddenly changed at one point and then I wanted it. I have no idea exactly what happened 🤷‍♂️, I think something in my playing style or my ear probably changed but don’t know exactly what it was. I have noticed some smaller details with playing lately that seem to lend themselves to sss and might attempt to do a video about it, but it’s not a super easy topic to get into.

@richhwang4230
@richhwang4230 22 күн бұрын
It did, Texas specials were OE. Kenny hated the Texas specials and sold them off. When I acquired the guitar it had no pickups, pots or strings and had been sitting a long time. The underwound pickups were installed in another guitar I bought from his parents (a 1982 JVRI), and the original SRV pots were cannibalized into the jvri also. I’d tried David Allen Texas floods in the SRV, but “something wasn’t right” at that time (it wasn’t the pickups fault, the guitar was still somewhat dead sounding). I removed them, put them in the jvri and the jvri suddenly became really great. So this is the second set of pickups, they’re decent overall. I’m going to try a mixture next time based on an Eric Johnson set but after it’s refretted I want to try another set of Allen Texas floods, or maybe the mojotone Rene Martinez set, or possibly lollar specials. Something that leans hotter but still sounds pretty traditional. Thanks for watching

It was a favorite for certain venues for awhile, then I started to have problems with it that in the end turned out to be a faulty volume pot. It started sounding just a little bit dull, I played it and actually got used to it, then the pot malfunctioned badly and it sat. Once I fixed it, the feel/sound changed quite a bit and I brought it to entirely the wrong venues to test and base my opinions on. The inevitable comparisons were the worst part. It’s a mind game and I need to get past it. Hopefully playing it live for 3 hours tonight will get rid of all my half-baked notions 😅

You might get the internal reverb sound you are looking for by taking the reverb tank return line and running it into the NORMAL channel via appropriate cable and RCA-to-1/4" jack. This will allow you to clean up that bass end, by attenuating with the bass knob; plus, you can brighten the reverb return with the treble knob and even the bright switch. Sounds MUCH better than using the normal reverb set up in the VIBRATO channel. Your amp is gorgeous! Great sounding amp!

It’s a mopar performance/direct connection generational culture communication method. They sold the same cams for decades and most of the community was very familiar with their products. Most would describe their cam as a 474,484,509,528,557,590 or 620. Most other enthusiasts who were familiar with Mopar understood what was referred to without listing complete specifications in every conversation. This may sound strange, but in the old days of mostly verbal communication this would often prompt the unfamiliar to ask about duration and lobe separation, thus prompting a more detailed conversation after………..sometimes……. because not every gearhead can list cam specs From memory. Mopar culture aside, Cam nicknames are quite common practice across the spectrum of enthusiasts…. ….certain ford cams are referred to by the last 3 digits of the part number, Pontiac had a McKellar grind, Chevy had a Duntov 30/30, and many referred to early Inskendarian and Crane grinds with 3 digits, usually lift but not always.

Brother, you own the guitar, not vice versa. If you bought this Les Paul to enjoy and not just as an investment, and loved everything else about this one, it would not have been 'sacrilege' to reshape and refinish the back of the neck to your liking. It's wood. That's not hard to do or have done. I could've done it for you in a few hours. (Edit: After watching and listening to you play, you are obviously a good player and to me, the neck profile didn't seem to be a problem for you. You even said, "This is cool." Did I miss something? I hope you don't find yourself regretting you let this one get away.)
