I have been following your Sudoku tutorials and my solving capabilities have been improving. Thank you, Madam for your articulate explanations and explaining each step repeatedly. A request - what software do you use for colour marking the lines & colouring the squares & candidates. Thank you in anticipation 🙏

HOW IS THIS A LESSON FOR BEGINNERS, WHEN YOU USE SOME MAGIC ASSISTANT TO FILL ALL THE CANDIDATES @3:22 ? HOW IS THE BEGINNER SUPPOSED TO DO THAT?
@LearnSomethingNewEveryDay
@LearnSomethingNewEveryDay 2 күн бұрын
You can use autofill to generate the candidates if you don't want to take the time to go around the grid cell by cell. The idea is to learn how triples work. Triples is a beginner level strategy, they are easier to spot than wings, skyscrapers, chains etc.

This was not a hard puzzle, but with only 23 givens it was rated hard...not because it would require advanced techniques or strategies. I think NYT just took the easy way of categorizing the puzzles. It seems to be the lazy way a lot of people rate puzzles. Of course they won't say "lazy"...they will say "efficient". Reminds me of my son! LOL 😍😍

This particular tutorial is just what I needed to help me when I write in all the candidates. It is pretty daunting at the beginning to try and find the triples with all those little numbers scattered everywhere. But, when you highlighted a single column and dulled down all the other columns, it was so much easier to see the triples. Now I am able to complete intermediate puzzles at last and I want to thank you for helping me out. You are an excellent teacher.

In minute 5.51 you are too fast, you missed the position of the 9s in the central block (a very helpful construction, because the nine from below blocks the only free cell in the upper line of central block!) and so also the position of the nine in the right central block

This doesn't feel like a beginners lesson as it is so hard to spot those triples when all the candidates are placed. You are explaining it very well but I guess it's just practise, practise, Wish I had your skills.
@LearnSomethingNewEveryDay
@LearnSomethingNewEveryDay 15 күн бұрын
Thanks Marie, keep practicing and you will start to see the patterns as your brain will get attuned. Then you will start to see them faster. There are lots of triples, I didn't point out all the triples, its a very common pattern, but you have to know what to look for. Have fun, and remember, practice makes progress! Thanks for the kind comment!

In row 8 , column 8 , the number 2 could also be a candidate . Not only the number 4 and the number 5 right ? which means the 4 and 5 are no longer naked pairs right ? Appreciate your feedback , thanks for the videos !

@@LearnSomethingNewEveryDay Minute 4:04 , Row 8. , column 8 , where there are candidates 4 and 5 , why could that not be candidates 2 , 4 or a 5? Thanks for your reply and regards from Belgium !
@LearnSomethingNewEveryDay
@LearnSomethingNewEveryDay 15 күн бұрын
Hello to Belgium from USA! Row 8 has two pairs, the 1,2 and the 4,5. For it to be considered a triple you need three numbers shared between three cells. The two is not shared with the 4 or the 5, so its not part of a triple. If one of the cells had the 2 with either the 4, or the 5, then you would have a triple. Does that help?

The first example was at first very frustrating to me because I couldn’t find any use in the excluded 3. There‘s just no follow-up. But it made me look very closely until I managed to spot my very first xy wing 🎉🎉🎉 Hurray! There‘s one with the pivot in R3,C9, x in R3,C3 and y in R9,C9. It conveniently excludes the 2 in R9,C3 and the whole puzzle unravels easily, even disregarding the empty rectangle trick. So, while it was an underwhelming empty rectangle it would make an excellent example for a super helpful xy wing 😅 Thank you!

Key thing to remember in finding X-wings or Skyscrapers: 2 "Sides" (2 columns or 2 rows parallel to each other) have to consist of Conjugate Pairs (only 2 Cells in Separate Blocks in a Column or Row contain the Same Number ie in video: b2,h2 and a7,h7) and that on the Third "Side" (in this case, the "Base") the Ends (h2 & h7) just be lined up in a Row or Column. And No, the Base DOESN'T have to be a Conjugate Pair or Matching Pairs. REPEAT: The Ends in the Third Side Doesn't have to be a Conjugate Pair or a Matching pair, they just have to line up. Sounds weird I know, but in a Skyscraper it's on the "Roof" (b2 & a7) where any Eliminations take place. Btw, same rules apply in an X-wing too! The Ends of the Roof (say if was b2 & b7) Doesn't need to be Conjugate Pairs or Matching Pairs (just like in the Base) they just need to Line up. Of course, the difference here is that (as opposed to a Skyscraper) you can also make eliminations in the Base too. Whew! Hope that helps guys! ✌🏼

At TS 8:25, why eliminate the 9 in G5 but not the 5? The logic for removing the 9 seems to apply equally to the 5. Did I miss something?
