Hola Nick desde Buenos Aires! I just bought my D-Lux 8 a couple of weeks ago and LOVE it, and your video really helps me with my settings! I have made my adjustments per your video and works great, so thank you! One question, in Scene Mode, the "Miniature Effect" or the "HDR" is not highlighted, and does not allow me to press it. What can I do to make work? Gracias Guillermo

Very clear explanation! But.. His example of using jpeg for bird photography is a bit unfortunate. In wild-life photography you want the raw files because of dynamic range that is retrained in the raw files.You want that additional data for processing the images later.. yes there are lot of pictures to sort to, but you want that additional data!

Thanks for the walkthrough! One question: Is there an option to quickly toggle between focal lengths? I assume there is not. But maybe it would be possible for you to suggest that to Leica for a firmware update. I imagine it like on the Q - System, where you can toggle between the (virtual) vocal lengths. In this case probably 24, 35, 50, 75mm. So when you see something and push the button three times, you know it will be at 50mm.

It’s a good idea, I’ll pass on the request.

Many thanks, Nick, for this excellent review. Seeing the D-LUX 8 as a major facelift of its predecessor Leica have worked on all major weaknesses, including the menu structure which appears so much more mature and intuitive. Although as a conscious user of zoom lenses I also miss the "step zoom" and "zoom resume" features I'll definitely upgrade to this model. I do trust a firmware update will bring these back.
@KemalMyktürk7 күн бұрын
excellent video explaining all the options. but why, for the love of god, did leica remove "step zoom" and "zoom resume" from the options? both were available on the d-lux 7, and are, for many photograpers, essential or "wesentlich". the one size fits all-approach does not work with a zoom lens camera. please bring these features back in a firmware update.

There’s no doubt that this camera is a welcome addition to the Leica lineup Nick. As an ancient Q1 owner (myself and the Q!) I won’t consider buying one due the telescopic nature of the lens. The Digilux 2 had the perfect lens imho with its internal zoom…✌️🇦🇺

That tilt screen sucks. It detracts from the beautiful camera. And I can’t imagine the decrease in water resistance! I will keep my Q2.

Absolutely the best explain-video of all settings on this camera, thanks a lot! I use my Q3 for over a year now and I immediately changed a few settings. I do have a little extra tip. I noticed after a while that the battery went very low quickly. This appeared to happen because I didn't use the EVF (only the LCD) and usually carry the camera in front of me on the carrying strap. I had this setting (EVF/LCD) at 'auto'. Therefore the EVF turned on all the time using battery. Well, maybe I helped someone with this small tip.

I prefer to turn the camera off when it's hanging on my shoulder. It's very quick to turn on again, and you can turn on the power switch by feel as you lift the camera.

The D-Lux 8 has only a 12 Bit sensor - does that not limit the results that you can get out of the camera?
@LeicaCameraAustralia10 күн бұрын
Not really. In theory, maybe. But in practice the difference between 12 and, say, 14 bit is negligible. I’m sure it can be measured in test images but in the real world, not so much!

I've had a D-Lux 6 for more than a decade. It takes great pictures. In fact, I often choose it in preference to my pro-am Nikon D750, especially when I'm going sightseeing while travelling. It's lower resolution than the D750, but the Leica colours are so much nicer. My one gripe with it is that it has no viewfinder, and I don't really like having to rely upon the LCD back, especially in bright sunshine. When the Typ 109 and later the 7 were released, I had a close look at their specs. Even though each had a viewfinder, I decided, in the end, that their better features did not (quite) justify an upgrade from the D-Lux 6. Now that the D-Lux 8 is available with an improved Leica-style interface, I'm very tempted. But ever since I attended a tryout of the Leica SL you conducted in Sydney in November 2017, I've had a hankering to upgrade to one from my Nikon DSLRs (including the D750, which I acquired in 2018). Now that second hand SLs are (just about) affordable for me (if I save up for a while), I think I might just keep using the D-Lux 6 for the time being, and get an SL to expand my Leica repertoire (initially with a compromise lens, maybe a Sigma). Anyway, thanks for the video, which taught me a few things about the D-Lux 8 I didn't already know from other videos I've recently seen.

Is this better than the V-Lux 5? I was thinking about selling my V-Lux 5 for this one. Thank you.
@LeicaCameraAustralia7 күн бұрын
It's quite different. The D-Lux 8 feels better in the hand and is much smaller, but it does not have the powerful telephoto lens of the V-Lux 5. Image quality would be very similar.

Any camera eco-system has overlaps between camera models but there seems to be quite a significant overlap between this and the Q-series cameras which are often marketed as EDC/travel cameras. How do you see this comparing with the Q? I currently have the M11 and Q2 and I’m debating whether to replace the Q2 with this to use as a companion to the M11.
@LeicaCameraAustralia7 күн бұрын
The Q2 is a much higher quality camera. 47MP, weather sealed, Summilux f1.7 lens etc. Hard to compare with the D-Lux 8 unless the lighter weight is a big consideration. The D-Lux 8 will also fit in a pocket - the Q2 won't.

I can only hope the next revision will have atleast a 20mp usable and ibis, Oh and better weather resistance because those extending lenses of the D-Lux always get dust problems. It is the PERFECT form factor and MFT is more than enough for daylight.
