I Loved Aladdin's looks. oh well. There's some pre-DKC rendered backgrounds in there that amazed me at the time. The megadrive version had great animation but pretty drab colors and bland gameplay.

I don’t think it looks bad at all and I definitely think there’s a lot more variety in the stages than the genesis version

Good list. Turtles In Time was definitely a good rental. I rented Desert Strike a lot both on the Mega Drive (Genesis) and SNES, too. Sunset Riders was another regular rental for me, great soundtrack. Mega Drive version was different to the SNES, more brutal. Aladdin was a quality game, the Mega Drive version was better than SNES imo.

I actually liked some of the changes on the genesis version of Sunset Riders better than the snes game

I'm a bit younger, so the systems are a little newer but I'd say that my top 3 rented games were: Rocket Knight Adventures on Genesis, Star Wars Rogue Squadron in the N64, and Time splitters 2 for the GameCube. My dad got so upset at me and my brother for Time splitters. We probably rented it enough to pay for 2-3 copies before he broke down and bought us the game lol.

I wish video stores would have implemented a thing where if you rented a game enough to own it then you could keep it. I probably spent at least 100 bucks on turtles in time from just renting it

Yes that was always an issue. Usually I’d get to the video store before the rush hit, but sometimes I’d be stuck wandering the aisles for the leftovers on a Friday night

I only rarely got to rent games, so they were usually one and done in my case, but I got to at least find out about games that zero friends or classmates had. I'm not a big football guy, but there was a rental-only Madden on Genesis that was all previous Super Bowl teams, and that was kinda cool. Far better than Greendog, and I figured that it wasn't that no one I knew had the game, they probably did and just didn't want to admit to it. That same video store rented PC games on CD a couple years later and I rented the talkie version of Leisure Suit Larry 6, because what a random thing to say you rented, right? Also, regarding Dragonball GT: I feel bad for me too, but thanks! Haha

Now I prefer the SNES version just because of bias. I like how it works, and that it's more simple. This means more accessible even if it is more vague in many places. Now having said that, just because i will play SNES Shadowrun before I will play Gensis version, I still think the more definitive experience is the Genesis. The weaker sound chip gives more of a techno vibe to the game and that you are just a shadowrunner and can do infinite missions is fun. Using magic and cyberware is counter to one another and it works more on the lore of the universe. I still don't like the matrix cyberdeck if you're a decker. It just hurts so bad to have to grind money, to get a better cyberdeck, so you can grind more money, to get a better cyberdeck. It's an ever ending loop and since you can't remove software save for purposefully hitting black ice and getting lucky, then this makes some software objective better if you know the progression of the game. as you don't want to level up a software program if you know it will suck down the line. So there are problems with that, and also no point in being a decker the only reason is to earn more money but you honestly don't need that much money in the game if you do the main story.

0:52 I had the exact opposite reaction with Mortal Kombat on the SNES. Despite my owning a Genesis and being a total Sega fanboy, I felt like that version paled in comparison and was (and is) only held in such high regard for its blood code. (I borrowed/rented both within a week of each other in 1993.) For my money, the SNES one just had better gameplay, enough buttons on the controller, and just felt closer to the arcade in feel and graphics. Of course, the real irony is that in modern times -- to me -- all versions of Mortal Kombat are long in the tooth and boring. Despite spending so much time within the genre as a preteen/teenager, one-on-one fighting games are the equivalent of Fruit Stripe chewing gum when I play them as an adult. All appeal is gone within minutes.

My biggest regret was the very first time my mom let me rent a game i looked at the box art and rented xmen on the nes. Being young and not knowing about the xmen yet, it looked really fun. I played for about 30 minutes, was confused more than i had ever been, and didn't play anymore. Xmen are some of my favorite comics and characters of all time, so im glad that didn't turn me off to them forever.

1:30 actually you could just do the input it quick even if the character didn't seem to flinch on screen and it still executes, the same goes for fatality, I could pull it off easily by ignoring the delayed on screen movement. 6:04 there's a comparison done by Console Wars, the Genesis version had better music, more voices, and better gameplay with no i-frames on enemies, I'd recommend you checking that one out if you're interested.

I kinda collected PS1 games starting in late 97 or so, and passed up the chance to buy Dragonball GT: Final Bout at a Toys R Us for $34.99, and then I never saw it anywhere again. I didn't know much about Dragonball at that time, but I went on a hunt because it must be rare; never in any used bins, employees at some game stores had never even heard of it. So fast forward to maybe 2001, I'm in a funcoland that I went to often, and they knew I was looking for it. This day, they happened to have it - a disc-only copy, no book, no insert, just a disc in a pink jewel case. So not even the original jewel case. But I couldn't pass it up... even at a whopping $123.45 after applying some trade-in credit. Then I got it home and not only is the game lacking in many ways, it got reissued when Atari got the DBZ license in like 2005ish? For $14.99. Different cover, different disc art, but I think it's identical otherwise. $123! And I was like 25! No excuses, I just made a bad decision.

I kinda did that with the import Samurai Shodown collection for the Saturn. I had been wanting a decent port of both games for so long and they actually had it at EB Games one day for like 100 bucks and I grabbed it up instantly. Unfortunately it was a pretty bad port of SS IV and I don’t think it even had RAM cart support (though it may have just been my janky cart). The Real Bout collection was much better and I should have got that instead

I was 11 years old went Mortal Kombat came home. I'd seen it at Celebration Station at my friend's birthday party and I was blown away by the graphics, sounds, and realistic appearing martial arts moves and violence. When I finally got it on my Sega Genesis, I was severely disappointed by the muddy, low color graphics and near complete lack of voices. To expect something similar to the arcade game and to instead find that the only voices that made it home were "Fight!", "Get over here!", and "Finish him!" was surprising to say the least. But it was all I had and I played the hell out of it anyway. And I could at least feel better than those poor SNES kids because I could do real fatalities. So, yeah, I think a lot of people were disappointed on Mortal Monday, since there wasn't really a strong port of MK available until the DOS version came out.
