Ernestine Oringdulph, who "created" this very event 4 years earlier, conducts the Hallelujah Chorus!

WOW - this totally brings back the memories. It was such a festive kick-off of the holiday season in Portland. Much-missed. Is there even ANYTHING like this anymore? Portland Baroque Orchestra did their version of it for awhile but of course, way smaller and no chorus of 3,000 people. Avshalomov was a dynamic force - as charismatic as any of the bigger conductors in conducting history.

Yes indeed. And other than perhaps a "Messiah favorites"-type thing with the audience singing along with a few choruses including the "Hallelujah", I don't think anything like this is being done with any great regularity. At least, not with thousands of people attending.

Another great story. I saw the Twilight Zone original too. It leaves a feeling of great wonder for many....could a robot ever really be thought of as living even if it's programed to show emotions?....but are they real emotions or just an illusion? But for the human being with them would it really ever matter after a while.? Would the illusion just be so real that they wouldn't even care to wonder any more.

Very much enjoyed this rendition of the classic Walking Distance. It was one of my favorites TWZone episodes. Just something about it I think a great many of us wish we could at least revisit our past even for a day or so. I've wondered what would I say to myself the older me to the younger....for me it would probably be don't worry about certain disappointments I'd have in the teenage years. It's all going to turn out great!

Just the episode itself, filmed in 1959...I'm sure it's online for free viewing in some bootlegged form. What we've uploaded here is an audio book, and audio books don't have visuals (I don't think?)

@TwiZoneInc2 жыл бұрын
Sadly they only released six episodes in this format. I agree, they are way better than those radio drama versions, most of which are very bad. The ones I've posted were actually adapted from the screenplays into story format - they weren't the scripts read by actors, as the radio dramas are (or acted by actors in the original episode.) THAT'S WHY THEY'RE SO GOOD! I wish they'd done more of them, but they probably didn't sell well. Then again neither did the radio dramas, I wouldn't guess, or they wouldn't be posted here on KZbin for everyone to listen to for free.

I used to "play " spaceman .I had a space 🚀 ship made out of an old wire spool 🧵,that my mom got from the power company. I cut out three or four slats and I would climb in the ship. I would get in flip imaginary switch es and stuff. Well we had to use our imagination back then. I'd watch these old shows ,and act them out. What a hoot.

You suggest in Part 1 that Terry's career was somehow hindered by her role in TZ, but I just can't imagine that was true. I think that role was a great showcase for her natural talent. She was no Anthony Perkins in that respect. I wonder if you have any evidence of that? BTW, don't forget Angelia Cartwright as a child actor in TZ.
@TwiZoneInc3 жыл бұрын
That may be your opinion, and you are certainly entitled to it, but if you had known some of the *painful* backstory that was Terry's life, you would not be suggesting this. "I wonder if you have any evidence of that?" I most certainly do, but it's beyond the scope of what I wanted to cover in this video. Yes, she was perfectly cast in the role. You also mention Angela Cartwright...it was Veronica Cartwright who had a role in TZ. While Veronica is a great and versatile actress who has had a long career, her performance on TZ - although competent - was nowhere near the realm of Terry's, if only for the kind of role it was (as a moody young teen who has trouble with her mother's passing.) Thanks for your interest.
@jre6173 жыл бұрын
I was so intrigued by Terry's performance on Twilight Zone I tried to find other performances. Terry is actually in an I Love Lucy (uncredited), but you can spot her at Little Ricky's birthday party. (hulu) She's also very good as a teenager in two My Three Sons (KZbin). I think her acting is very natural. She's in a Leave it to Beaver, but I don't know where to access Beaver shows. Anyway, thanks for helping keep her memory.

I wish I knew! These recordings all came off bootlegged cassette tapes - VERY rough - copies of copies. There was a compilation put together by Pearl Records (I think?) some years ago, we're talking 30 years or more now - of these very early recordings from the days when everyone played into a horn and a wax master disc was made. Then, slowly, came microphones! Anyway, I just wanted to get these out there for anyone who might be interested. Although the quality is horrid, it gives us a good idea about how these people played whom we can only read about in books or on Google searches!

Post Script: Originally Paul Douglas played the role of the manager "Mouth" McGarry. During production he suffered from serious heart disease that killed him the day after production wrapped. He was basically suffering from a heart attack during shooting, unbeknownst to anyone. Serling felt that the circumstances of his death cast a pall over the episode but CBS refused to pay to reshoot. So Serling himself paid for the reshoot with Jack Warden recast as the manager. The actor who played "Casey", Robert Sorrells went on to be a character actor for many years in Hollywood. On July 24th 2004, Sorrells was drinking in a bar in Simi Valley, CA. He became drunk and belligerent and was thrown out of the bar by another patron. Sorrells went home, got a gun ( you know how this has to end) returned to the bar and shot the patron in the back, killing him. He also shot a bystander and fled the scene. He was later apprehended, tried and found guilty of one count of premeditated murder and one count of attempted premeditated murder. He was sentenced to 32 years to life in July of 2005. He died in prison on June 11th, 2019 at the age of 88.

Thank you. Yes, check out parts 2 and 3 for more. I'm just glad these old recordings are being posted here on KZbin - the copyrights on these recordings expired a very, very long time ago and they're public domain now as nobody is making money off them. Least of all, the artists themselves who are all deceased. The beauty of KZbin!!! Remember what it was like 15 years ago and longer? If you wanted to hear these things, you had to have a record player AND the old records themselves, if they weren't scratched and warped and totally un-listenable. Not many were ever released on cassette tapes either. Some older musicians that I knew in the 1990s did not even have CD players...I think maybe eventually they were brow-beaten into it by their colleagues but they were very late adopters. ANYHOW, ENJOY EVERYONE!!
