One of the biggest issues facing commercial lamb producers in the eastern US is having to compete with hobby farms that don't run their operation as a business. These hobbyists continue to supply the market with lambs at a loss using off farm income to support their project. A significant percentage of lambs sold in the eastern US come from operations that don't need to make a profit to survive.

CDT vaccine should be given to pregnant ewes who have been previously vaccinated and boostered annually 3-4 weeks before lambing. Lambs should be vaccinated at weaning and boostered 3-4 weeks later. You may get by without vaccinating if you are finishing on grass. If you are feeding them on concentrates and they are gaining well, you will probably lose several lambs to enterotoxemia.

What a great listen Austin. On the small numbers we had mortality was high with Barbers pole. As he mentioned the mental strain got too much.
@craigrobinsonsaddler23 күн бұрын
A good listen. I run dorper ewes n lambs. 20 head. I'm no longer have any as Barbers Pole worm, wild called it quits. With the worms 🪱 I spoke to the original breeder who was a vet. His answer tome was, worn today then day 15 then day 30. I then done the same process. It worked and in the control, but we were in a decent drought, Queensland Australia. Then I head you say that you wormed similar at the early stage of their life and the other was rotational grazing. Of recent times I've thought of making a sheep caravan 20'x 8' and housing 6 weaner sheep. Yes worm the same programme then they would be moved everyday. 😊🇦🇺

We have a few that have bred in the first year but historically their lambs are not as large and delicate at birth. I like to wait an additional year and have the new lambs healthy and more developed for better success.

I just brought a Meramma to my flock. No experience with sheep, but cattle and chickens. We have chickens too. Did I make a mistake?
@BalancedRuminantGrazersАй бұрын
@@pretzeltwisttwist7740 I have a friend who breeds Merammas. She says that they are a “sticky dog” meaning that they bond to their animal or their humans very well. So I think you should be good. I would just make sure to keep a close eye on the dog for the first few weeks to make sure that they’re bonding with the sheep. Nip any problems in the butt ASAP. But as long as she’s staying with the sheep and showing interest in them, you should be good off to a good start. Best of luck!
@pretzeltwisttwist7740Ай бұрын
@@BalancedRuminantGrazers thank you for your response! Any tips on helping them bond to the sheep? He is currently chasing them and the ram is getting annoyed. We are having the dog sleep in a stall at night with the sheep, hoping that helps.

What age are you breeding your F1 ewe lambs?
@BalancedRuminantGrazers2 ай бұрын
We are exposing them to the ram at 5-6 months old but not all will get bred. I would guess 30-50% will get bred. They just don't have the body size on them yet in our breed up program. If they don't get bred the first year they are definitively ready to go the following year.

Awesome! Best of luck to you! The AW does put some size on the lambs so watch for that. I worry about it most with my smaller framed Katahdins. I have no worries about my F1s lambing out their 2nd year though!

@@BalancedRuminantGrazers yes, I’m happy to be starting with a slightly larger framed F1 vs the standard framed Kathadins. Hoping to breed up over the next few years. Let’s keep in touch. We may be able to make deals on rams if fresher genetics are needed.

Seems to me that slow,and somewhat steady so you can track your progress and what genetics has the best chance for long term Profitability. Why go spend a bunch of money before you have to. By sourcing from 4 different places you should in theory have enough genetic diversity to keep you going for a few more years. That should give you time to figure what works best for your program and act accordingly. Also,what kind of customer base do you have built up and for what type of product? If your happy with the direction your going it might be best not to chance derailing that Progress.
