One of the biggest issues facing commercial lamb producers in the eastern US is having to compete with hobby farms that don't run their operation as a business. These hobbyists continue to supply the market with lambs at a loss using off farm income to support their project. A significant percentage of lambs sold in the eastern US come from operations that don't need to make a profit to survive.

I often take lambs to auction barn and tell them to only sell under market value. Please Gawd no more money I have an off the farm job..
