Sir, irá the pendulum's movement exact or does it lose accuracy as the traction loses strength?

Hi I would like to build this boat where can the blue prints you have be purchased?
@edwardmaterson36462 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, sorry I had not checked this site sooner. The plans are from Howard Chapelle's American Sailing ships, if I remember correctly. In any case it would either be that or The Search for Speed under Sail, same author. I simply photocopied the plans and blew them up to the desired size. You can paste them together if you don't have a larger print capability. Some times I just make a same size copy and bring it to a local print establishment where they can usually enlarge them for a pretty reasonable fee. Hope this helps.

The bevels on the first one face the wrong way it only works because you got lucky

The first is fine. The second one is backward. The teeth point into the pallets, not away.

Great video! We recently purchased an antique (ca. 1830) house on Cape Cod formerly owned by Captain Harding Cobb. He operated at least two packet ships between the Cape and Boston. I’d very much appreciate learning how to obtain the plans for a packet sloop featured in your video as I hope to carve a packet sloop half hull model for our house. Thanks!

William: The plans I used were enlarged from Howard Chapelle's "American Sailing Craft" if I remember correctly. Sorry for the delayed response. EM

William: The book I mentioned was not the correct one. It should have been "The Search for Speed Under Sail" Howard Chapelle, Bonanza Books.

Hello Edward Materson, really great video, I saw your last video part 1, really have made a lot of progress since then, will you be releasing a launching video to show it in demonstration? I would really like a video like that. I have recently started repairing/building boats with my first video being released today, you're more than welcome to have a look, possibly suggest how I could improve things? Thanks Tom

I'm impressed that you made an ink plate from scratch, and the linkage that moves the roller arms. Looks like you could straighten that roller linkage just a little - the roller usually travels further up the ink plate. See my video at about 10:10 to see this same press in action: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJi0kqaogqd0gqM (BTW, the "platen" is the place on the press where the paper goes.)
@edwardmaterson36463 жыл бұрын
JIm: Yes, you are correct about the terminology. Don't know why I referred to it as a "platen" since I am well aware of the usual reference to that part. I had to experiment with the linkage and was aware that it could be better but just felt I had invested enough time. I had no part to replicate so had to use trial and error. Anyone with machine tools could do a better job of course. Anyway, thanks for your interest.

Where do you get your plans for the boats?
@edwardmaterson36463 жыл бұрын
Plans are available in many places: Books, Magazines, Museums, etc. This particular plan was enlarged from Howard Chapelle's, "American Small Sailing Craft", available through Amazon and used books dealers.

So the lifts have to be planed/thicknessed to represent the scale distance between the water lines on the plans? Have I got that right? Great video and model thanks.
@edwardmaterson36464 жыл бұрын
Yes. Not having a thickness planeer I use 3/4" stock lumber. It is possible to create your own lift lines but takes a bit of work. Since you have the coordinates of the half breadth and the station lines you can bend a batten along the appropriate points and create new lift lines.

Thanks so much for this video, Edward! After having purchased our first wood boat last year (1984 Skiff Craft) I'm planning to make half hulls of our boat and the 1955 Chris Craft Commander my grandfather owned. It's one thing to read about how to make a half hull, but another thing entirely to see a master like you at work. Thank you for taking the time to explain the art of making half hulls and for helping another generation keep such a beautiful tradition alive.
@edwardmaterson36464 жыл бұрын
Thank you Blake. There are others on KZbin who have greater skills than mine but it is nice to be referred to as a "master".

Dear Mr. Masterson, how can you be reached directly. I am interested in making full models. Can you assist me with this. I would truly appreciate your help. Your video was very good.
@edwardmaterson36464 жыл бұрын
Shawna: You can create a full model hull if you can make a half-hull model. All it takes is to flip the patterns and use wider stock. If you trace an innere profile on each template and cut along those lines you can create a hollow full hull. Christopher Hale has a video on his full models and there are many others. Also, Dover books puts out a few reasonably priced books on model making. Harold Payson has an excellent book on model making but he had a full boat-making shop and many of the tools few people own. You can do it though with the simplest tools a jigsaw (hand) costs less than $10 at some stores Chisels should be the best quality but you can get by with one or two. Hope this helps.
@edwardmaterson36464 жыл бұрын
Correction: Christopher Hale's video is about half-hulls but there are many full model making videos on KZbin.

Hi, where can I get the plans?
@edwardmaterson36464 жыл бұрын
The source for the plans is included in the video at about the 19 second mark. The Dover book:"Building Model Ships", 1998, includes full-size patterns.
@edwardmaterson36464 жыл бұрын
Afteer searching online I did not find this book available any longer.
@thomaszaccone39606 жыл бұрын
I guess the same method can be used for a full hull model except you do two sides.
@edwardmaterson36466 жыл бұрын
Thomas: Yes, the same method can be used juste by flipping the templates of the "lifts" and tracing the mirror image onto your stock. Also, to create a hollow model, draw parallel lines an inch or two inside each lift profile (enough to leave room for glueing the lifts together).
