I agree! One of the best half hull demonstrates I’ve seen on you tube.

Thanks so much for this video, Edward! After having purchased our first wood boat last year (1984 Skiff Craft) I'm planning to make half hulls of our boat and the 1955 Chris Craft Commander my grandfather owned. It's one thing to read about how to make a half hull, but another thing entirely to see a master like you at work. Thank you for taking the time to explain the art of making half hulls and for helping another generation keep such a beautiful tradition alive.

Thank you Blake. There are others on KZbin who have greater skills than mine but it is nice to be referred to as a "master".

Great video! We recently purchased an antique (ca. 1830) house on Cape Cod formerly owned by Captain Harding Cobb. He operated at least two packet ships between the Cape and Boston. I’d very much appreciate learning how to obtain the plans for a packet sloop featured in your video as I hope to carve a packet sloop half hull model for our house. Thanks!

William: The plans I used were enlarged from Howard Chapelle's "American Sailing Craft" if I remember correctly. Sorry for the delayed response. EM

William: The book I mentioned was not the correct one. It should have been "The Search for Speed Under Sail" Howard Chapelle, Bonanza Books.

Hi I would like to build this boat where can the blue prints you have be purchased?
@edwardmaterson36462 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, sorry I had not checked this site sooner. The plans are from Howard Chapelle's American Sailing ships, if I remember correctly. In any case it would either be that or The Search for Speed under Sail, same author. I simply photocopied the plans and blew them up to the desired size. You can paste them together if you don't have a larger print capability. Some times I just make a same size copy and bring it to a local print establishment where they can usually enlarge them for a pretty reasonable fee. Hope this helps.

Beautiful work! Particularly love the Bawley you carved. Where did you find the plan for that particular shrimp boat? Thanks for sharing this!

Todd Thanks for the comment. Don't check these often enough. Regard to the plans I have to stop and think. Have so many books and stuff and I did that some time ago. If I can track them down I will post them for you

Dear Mr. Masterson, how can you be reached directly. I am interested in making full models. Can you assist me with this. I would truly appreciate your help. Your video was very good.
@edwardmaterson36464 жыл бұрын
Shawna: You can create a full model hull if you can make a half-hull model. All it takes is to flip the patterns and use wider stock. If you trace an innere profile on each template and cut along those lines you can create a hollow full hull. Christopher Hale has a video on his full models and there are many others. Also, Dover books puts out a few reasonably priced books on model making. Harold Payson has an excellent book on model making but he had a full boat-making shop and many of the tools few people own. You can do it though with the simplest tools a jigsaw (hand) costs less than $10 at some stores Chisels should be the best quality but you can get by with one or two. Hope this helps.

Correction: Christopher Hale's video is about half-hulls but there are many full model making videos on KZbin.
