Grand Canyon 4960 is a 2-8-2 mikado just like the southern railway 4501 and number 29 is a 2-8-0 Consolidation locomotive just like the Southern Railroad 630 💖🚂

National weather service has issued a NOSTALGIA WARNING
How come it has a five digit number? Knew that was a thing on some older locomotives in Mexico but never seen it north of the border.

My father started working for Southern Pacific in the early 70" s doing teletype and other clerk duties .He also would close 3 trestles on the coos bay line .It was on the Oregon coast .Since the train did crew change at the depot in coos bay or would have to slow to a crawl coming over the bridges that gave me plenty of opportunities to ask if I could ride on the train while he ran ahead to open the trestles. My first ride was in 82 and my last was in 94 right before I graduated high school. I wish I would have taken more pictures. As most children I had no idea how privileged I was to get to do such things. One of my favorite rides was in the caboose with some maintenance guys that were dead heading .They were playing cards and even let me try .
