Hi Christina! I studied English Literature at Trevelyan college :) Durham colleges work a bit differently in that they don't specialise in subjects - each college has a range of subjects in it, which I loved as it meant I made friends with lots of different people! When choosing your college preferences, I'd consider 1) location (though Durham is small so everywhere will be walking distance for lectures etc) 2) whether you prefer a larger or smaller college - there is a range of sizes 3) if you'd prefer catered or self-catered. I didn't end up being allocated to my college of choice, but I absolutely adored where I ended up anyway, so don't fret x

Hey! Sorry for the late reply x I think Durham, like any place, has good and bad things to it, but personally I loved my time here and am staying in Durham now that I've graduated. I think it's fair to say there's a 'town and gown' divide (students vs locals) here sadly, but I took that as a chance to break that stereotype and have lots of amazing friends who live here. :) In terms of sexual pressure, I wouldn't say that from my experience it's any worse or better than most other universities. Overall the welfare at colleges and on uni level is great with lots of support - people's boundaries vary, but as long as you know what you feel comfortable with and stick to that, I've found people to be respectful of that. thecardz hi! Well done for deciding to go for it :) most airport staff are very aware of diabetes and have had training on it since lots of people have it. I usually just tell the person at security before I go through that I have an insulin pump, as well as liquid medication in my bag, and then when I go through and the alarm goes off they’ll usually just confirm what my pump is and do a pat-down check instead x it was scary at first but it’s really not a big deal overall so I wouldn’t worry about it too much! Congratulations - Aidan's is awesome! You'll have a bit of a hill to climb up from town which people will probably keep reminding you of aha, but it's got an awesome view and a friendly atmosphere + close to science/business lectures :)

Hey Amy! :) Ah exciting - congrats!!! The landings are so cute 💛 so your meals are all in the dining hall etc, but each landing has a pantry which has a fridge, microwave, kettle, sink etc, as well as a bathroom and showers. You’ve got everything you need really :) college does also have a couple of full kitchens which can be used if you want to bake or something and a laundry room for washing x

Hey x I didn’t really know anyone properly - but if your uni has something like a post offer visit day (Durham did for example) then I’d suggest going to that! Also, most units will have a Facebook fresher group set up before getting there so you could chat to people on there before arriving too :) just remember that everyone will be in the same boat as you x

Gulderen Oz I'm coming from abroad too!!! Your college may have updated a freshers handbook somewhere (St. Cuthbert's Society uploaded it on Facebook) which should specify if gowns are needed or not. If you're in Castle you'll definitely need one but I don't know about the rest😅 Which college are you in??

@@davonheria739 the college is pretty good I remember living in quite fondly. Durham uni as a whole is plagued with the issue of bringing in a load of posh southerners to a working class area. There's a lot of dickhead Oxbridge rejects and I'm told the support for mental health etc is pretty poor. I like the city though.

Hi! :) The living cost is fairly high, but considering everything you get for it, it's actually not that bad. Because of the college system, you are paying not only for your room and full-time catering, but also all the college events, the pastoral system (eg college staff that you have access to etc), all the facilities (the new gym, recording studio, sports hall, tennis courts) and societies too. Definitely look into getting Student Finance if the price is an issue - I rely on that myself! :) The great thing in terms of managing money is that in first year, almost everything you normally need to pay for is included in the college fee, and any extra money will go on stuff like clothes/snacks etc, so mainly things that aren't essentials. Also, college offers a scholarship (reduction of fees) for some people depending on their family income. Room sharing can actually be so great. You get to choose if you want to share 1st term or 2nd/3rd. In first term it is great for socialising and you instantly have a friend to do stuff with. In the following terms, you actually get to choose who you want to share with, which is also great. I shared second term and we decided to keep sharing for third term because we enjoy it so much. :) If for whatever reason sharing doesn't work out, however, there is a person in college that you can talk to and can sort out an alternative plan.
