Some notes about the video: 1-I shot it after I extracted the key, wasn’t sure if it would work. 2-The wire shape is very important, needs a tiny hook to go through the side of the key and grab the end. 3-Don’t try this at home, I was lucky but there’s a risk of damaging things or getting hurt with electrical components like the ignition. The more logical thing to do is to pay a locksmith. Or learn these procedures from a professional, maybe there’s a step required of disconnecting battery for extra safety, I don’t know. 4-I tried various tweezers first which did not work, that would have made for a more interesting video with various failed attempts before the solution 5-I have an extra key which I’m trying to get duplicated but a few local shops don’t have blanks for it. Some shops are quoting a long time to make one probably because they have to order a blank. I ordered some from amazon and will attempt to have a key made at a hardware store. Wish me luck!

I think one of the issues with a tool like this is ergonomics. Multitools with pliers are already pretty infamous for pinching your hands between the handles, and a tool like this will probably have issues with that. I dont really see a solution to the ergonomics with the single pivot configuration as the handles have to cross over each other to fit and you cant reshape the grips without causing fit and fitment issues when closed. Something I wanted to tinker around with but didnt have the time to do is basically take nextool's mini flagship and do a single pivot plier head and have scissors in a handle. If you make the scissors take up the internal space and make one handle bigger than the other, you could shape the handles differently to not create a pinch point since you could move the outside tools to a different layer and that might offer a better ergonomic experience, but you also couldnt have small tools on the inside

hi, i have in my jean's left pocket my phone, and in my right pocket my leather wallet, and my keys but i'd like to have my knife (that doesn't have a pocket clip) on me, but if i get my wallet out it would be visible, do you have any recommendations ? great video btw, i just discovered your channel, keep up the great work👍

Some people add a short piece of lanyard with beads to tools or knives and then you can pull the lanyard to retrieve it. I think the channel best damn edc explains that. I haven’t used that system but could be worth checking out!

KZbin recommended this video, and I’m glad cause the idea looks awesome. Fewer parts, room for additional tools. Just make the tools customizable so people can have what they want. Leatherman stopped making their small bladeless tool that was perfect for air travel, so I’ve been looking for something with pliers and scissors, with a place to put tweezers/toothpick. Your idea seems like it would scale really well to a keychain size multitool.

Yes. With some effort we may be able to create some open source pieces that people can make, share and improve upon, like happened with software or 3d printers. Thanks for sharing the enthusiasm!

The current version is a bit weak on the locking strength. I think it needs a slight tweak of a couple dimensions. My plan is to refine it and try a metal version, if it’s usable I’ll put dxf files on the github repository where I’ve been uploading the other designs.

I am really enjoying following your progress on this. The locking mechanism doesn't come across as the strongest, but that's actually entirely okay since you're making a tool and not a weapon. I think most people just want the blade or tool to not close on their finger, and your idea certainly does that at least. What interests me the most is that you seem to be designing for easy/simple production, which I can envision resulting in a lower price on the final tool. Is your intention to create a tool that is cheap, or is this more related to ease of rapid prototyping? Cheers.
@ToolTechGeek
@ToolTechGeek 16 күн бұрын
Yes I think it’s interesting both ways. The 2d nature would make it easy for a hobbyist to design & prototype (ordering laser cut parts online ), and then if one wants to mass produce maybe can be made very cheaply via stamping (or for a small run maybe laser cut in a factory). I kind of envision that these tools could become a kit that a small business could sell disassembled and the user can put together for fun and maybe choose a custom toolset like happens with the modular multi tools.

The ergonomics of v2 are much better. I actually thought the chunky pliers of V1 were good, but they might just be my preference for more blunt nosed pliers. I'd suggest avoiding a friction element for engaging the plier head, go for a detent instead. Friction elements are quite finicky to get just right and they wear and change behavior. I'd suggest a detent mechanism like many other multi tools, they're more reliable and stable long term. I personally think they provide a more stable and secure feel right off the bat as opposed to friction hinges which have a fairly soft feel and can slip in use. They also provide a tactile click when locking into position, which I personally like with tools, it lets me know the tool is deployed properly and ready to use rather than having to guess if a friction hinge is fully seated.
@ToolTechGeek
@ToolTechGeek 22 күн бұрын
yes I’m leaning that way. I’m looking at small ball detent hardware as we speak.
@H34...
@H34... 21 күн бұрын
@@ToolTechGeek Something like a leaf spring detent might be easier to print and also manufacture out of metal. I'm not 100% sure how other mutlitools do it but i suspect its sheet metal/leaf spring based rather than ball detent. You could also consider maybe a liner lock type mechanism. Not exactly a detent but as an end user I wouldn't be opposed to a liner lock on the pliers.

This is awesome. Keen to see version 3 and beyond! Have you considered incorporating bit driver and bit holder? That plus an upgraded able knife blade would make this system epic!
@JWestin
@JWestin 23 күн бұрын
You could use a bearing ball with a divot to hold the pliers in position. Similar to how a frame lock holds a knife blade in place. If you wanted to keep it simple, you could just add teeth to the friction point so they click in.

Very clever engineering and awesome how quickly you incorporated feedback in your newest version. 😎 My suggestions would be to print a traditional three pivot design that has the exact same size pliers and implements to compare the ergonomics (in all usage scenarios) and resulting size/weight. I'm curious about the overall closed length of your prototype compared to the max possible length of main tools (knife, file, saw, scissors, etc). Will your design support four large implements like the Leatherman Wave/Arc?

i said you should patent it! i'm famous! woohoo i expect a discount when its out!🤣 still more to do but nice improvment's i would've made the pliers more on the needle nose side and maybe consider magnet's for the pliers ditent. also you will probbably add outside tools and usully they are wider at the base so you'lle need to figure out a way to reshape the handle so it will fit and still not damage the better ergonomics you've got in the new prototype. 💪

At this size, you'd be competing with Nextool's mini sailor if you could scale production to price it at like $25. Excited to see how this progresses. I like that you maintained a small profile overall, while still having a substantial plier head. Perhaps the Leatherman mini tool would also be of inspiration.

You can add a long blade and a long t-shank adapter with a file or sawblade if you bend the frame like on the Wave. Also, a bit more needlenose on the pliers would be nice.

I like three things about it: 1-Lots of tools in a lightweight, small package. 2-Affordable while still having the warranty & quality from the company. 3-Historical value. In part it’s technically similar to the original PST, which to me is interesting to understand how the current plier-based multi tool eco system started evolving. On the minus side, mine had the issue of the blade coming out unexpectedly which I think was fixed in subsequent batches, and doesn’t have locks (not a huge deal considering almost every swiss army knife also doesn’t and they are quite popular). For the last reasons though I like the rebar a bit better.

Need to think of how much the handle is open when using pliers and mabe install a spring loaded plier to fix opening plier head mabe but definitely need to have less distance in handle when using pliers you really don't want to have Handel's open to wide when grabbing something tight with pliers but it looks like your on to something here
@JohnAndries-lt2jd
@JohnAndries-lt2jd Ай бұрын
One of the biggest problems I see is the opening angle of the handles. You could make the handles articulating but then you get a 3 pivot MT.
@JohnAndries-lt2jd
@JohnAndries-lt2jd Ай бұрын
You need to completely redo the ergonomics if it's going to have a chance. The pliers head needs to be superior to anything on the market, perhaps specifically designed to work with fasteners better. You better make sure that single pivot can withstand the load pressures. With 3 and 5 pivot multitools the stress is divided amongst the pivots. Here one pivot bears all the stresses.
@ToolTechGeek
@ToolTechGeek Ай бұрын
Tbh there’s that plus a large amount of other engineering details that are not addressed in this prototype. Some new designs took years to get right (i.e. the story of PST or the G.O.A.T tool) However there’s probably teams nowadays that can potentially knock it out in a shorter timeframe.

How much leverage does your single pivot design have versus a conventional pivot or SOG's pivot system?
@kokost

Interesting concept. Two things of concern: how do the pliers lock in place? The free rotating system might be problematic with opening. I also see the crisscrossing design as a pinching hazard...
