This washing machine helped get 4 kids through high school with soccer, hockey, and basketball games, causing almost daily use! The genius "burnt tire" alarm was recently tripped, leading to a $12 belt purchase that will once again rejuvenate this masterpiece of 80's engineering! "Get a new washer?" Hell no! This thing is invincible and only requires minimal maintenance to keep in the fight! "Viva la 80's!"

I had the LA712 model. Purchased new in 1987. In 2021 the white porcelain tub paint was breaking apart and flaking off so I called Maytag about a replacement tub. The reps response was "Let me get this straight...you have a 34 year old model 712?! Really?! We don't make parts for that model anymore!" Broke my heart to give it up. I went to get a new Maytag but was told Maytag is not what it used to be so $1200 later I now have a Speed Queen TR7 top load. Pretty happy with.

This looks like the washing machine they had on the Child Psychiatric Unit at The University of Iowa Hospitals and clinics. It was used daily. I was on that unit in 1986, 1991, and 1992. I remember being in the room on one occasion when it went into the first spin cycle when they still were in the original building. I was surprised at how it shook. I have one almost like that. I bought the Maytag used 17 years ago from a repair shop. I have had two belts replaced, a relay box refurbished since. The washer still works but not 100%. The gears in the transmission have probably worn down, so I can only wash small loads. If I wash a big load, the agitator won't move and make awful nosies. To wash a large load, I first set to small load setting, as the agitator starts to move, I add more washing quickly and add more water using an external hose. I hope it will keep working since I dislike the modern washers. Any suggestion on how to repair the transmission? I am not mechanically inclined.

I’m not mechanically inclined either, but I would suggest looking up videos on how to repair it. I have done that with success for my washer, dryer, refrigerator, car. Good luck.

@lonestartropicalstx2 жыл бұрын
I pour the bleach in the tub while it is filling up with water. As for the fabric softener, try taking the blue cup out and clean it. Also, take lint trap out and clean that. The lint trap is the blue thing the cup sits in. Hope this helps.
@user-nq8vm2iv9v7 ай бұрын
I've heard never use fabric softener or it will eventually mess with the pump. I don't and am ok with it. Also, fabric softener leaves a film on the clothing and towels to get the softness and that won't due for me. after several washings the residual fabric softener came out of the clothing.
