This is the 2nd part in a two part series.
This is my Maytag Heavy Duty Large Capacity Washer. Maytag washer model: LA412; Series 04; Serial # 313861 TC. It was manufactured in February 1987. In this video, I am washing a load of colors on the regular fabrics cycle. Still running great after all of these years. I bought this washer 3 or 4 years ago and the only problem I have had from it was when the water pump became clogged with a dryer sheet I had accidentally dropped in the drum. These older machines were built to last a long time and this video proves it.
Hope you enjoy the video, and if so, please like, comment and subscribe for future videos. Thank you so much for watching!

This thing is worth its weight in gold. No fancy “HE” detergents, no code cries and complaints, or crashes for the slightest bit of resistance, and hardly any repairs. Just straight up wash, rinse, drain, and spin.

This washing machine helped get 4 kids through high school with soccer, hockey, and basketball games, causing almost daily use! The genius "burnt tire" alarm was recently tripped, leading to a $12 belt purchase that will once again rejuvenate this masterpiece of 80's engineering! "Get a new washer?" Hell no! This thing is invincible and only requires minimal maintenance to keep in the fight! "Viva la 80's!"

Those older Maytags--before they enlarged the tub size--had a nice lon stroke action. The latter ones had a quicker, shorter stroke, and eventually a corkscrew agitator. I have spare parts--timer, belts, tub seal, bearing kit, even the transmission--as an insurance to keep the machine going. Spare parts get harder to find and get more expensive. Best machines that don't put a damper on laundry day. I always use gentle cycle for clothes, underwear, and socks.

Have one still working every other day of washing since 1985 la612. Just replaced the nozzle and sleeve for $10 mail order. No electronics......me LOVE ! Was going to do the belts but if it ain't broke, I ain't fixing. The hoses inside are still supple. Manufacturers in everything are ripping us off now a days via cheaply made parts.

The last of the great machines produced by Maytag when quality mattered instead planned obsolescence. Mine is now 35 years old and still 'doin it dirty' after thousands and thousands of wash cycles over the years. Helical drive transmission (genius), motor, belts and pulleys, fill valve and water pump. are the four main working parts. Built like a tank to last.

I had the LA712 model. Purchased new in 1987. In 2021 the white porcelain tub paint was breaking apart and flaking off so I called Maytag about a replacement tub. The reps response was "Let me get this straight...you have a 34 year old model 712?! Really?! We don't make parts for that model anymore!" Broke my heart to give it up. I went to get a new Maytag but was told Maytag is not what it used to be so $1200 later I now have a Speed Queen TR7 top load. Pretty happy with.

This looks like the washing machine they had on the Child Psychiatric Unit at The University of Iowa Hospitals and clinics. It was used daily. I was on that unit in 1986, 1991, and 1992. I remember being in the room on one occasion when it went into the first spin cycle when they still were in the original building. I was surprised at how it shook. It went with them when they moved into the hospital. It was a workhorse.

My 34 year old started smoking, thought it was the motor. It was the belt between the motor and the pump. Changed it in 15 minutes second belt changed in 34 years. I decided to grease the motor, removed end cap on top and used moly wheel bearing grease, lubrication can give out on motor. Runs much quieter now. Recommend change all hose clamps to worm gear type.

I have one almost like that. I bought the Maytag used 17 years ago from a repair shop. I have had two belts replaced, a relay box refurbished since. The washer still works but not 100%. The gears in the transmission have probably worn down, so I can only wash small loads. If I wash a big load, the agitator won't move and make awful nosies. To wash a large load, I first set to small load setting, as the agitator starts to move, I add more washing quickly and add more water using an external hose. I hope it will keep working since I dislike the modern washers. Any suggestion on how to repair the transmission? I am not mechanically inclined.

I've heard never use fabric softener or it will eventually mess with the pump. I don't and am ok with it. Also, fabric softener leaves a film on the clothing and towels to get the softness and that won't due for me. after several washings the residual fabric softener came out of the clothing.

I have owned this exact washer since 1988. It recently started running from one cycle to the next without stopping. I will start it on the 'regular fabrics' cycle and it may shut off at the 'permanent press' off. Sometimes it keeps on going around. Can someone tell me which part likely needs to be replaced?

College Debt Slavery-on kindle that’s a good question. Unfortunately I don’t have an answer for you. Would love to see a pic. Push knob in them turn to it always to the right and as soon as you put it on the beginning of the cycle you have selected and preferably the beginning then you pull knob back out and it starts filling up then agitates and pauses briefly then starts spinning out the water, and if you ever need to stop it just push Knob back in.

Take the lint filter out of the agitator top and soak it in maybe mild dish soap and use a toothbrush or another soft brush to get the gunk out. Believe me they're hard to clean. Having two grandma's who had the same model of maytag washers like this I've cleaned out the lint filter many times. Hope this helps me

A new brake package? What do you mean?
@billivins2811
@billivins2811 5 жыл бұрын
@@lonestartropicalstx You're tub is "indexing" (or moving) during agitation. It should remain stationary. Because it's not, the brake is not holding. There may be one of two things that are the problem...either the brake is not fully engaging or you need a new tub brake. There are plenty of youtube videos about Maytag brakes.

Thank you for letting me know! I appreciate it so much!
@billivins2811
@billivins2811 5 жыл бұрын
@@lonestartropicalstx Of course! The other tell tale sign is that it took the tub a little longer to come to a stop than it should have when it finished spinning. Before investing in a brake package, you might try removing the transmission pulley and putting some additional grease on the helical shaft. The transmission pulley rides up and down that shaft and engages or disengages the brake, depending on the direction of the motor. When it's not well greased, the brake sometimes won't engage as it should. Again, youtube is a great resource for learning how to remove the transmission pulley and re-installing it. Try that first. If it works, you have a simple fix!
