When one grows up in a highly dysfunctional environment life is a mixed bag & complex. Of course she remembers both good & the suffocating environment laid down by Conroy. She at times enjoyed her mother or her nurse, but I have the impression she could not trust her mother because of her foolishness in being so influenced by Conroy. Having an heir to the throne kept away from court so much. Is poor preparation. She was treated like a pawn & yes her mother was siding with Conroy. Those whose mothers enabled abuse or neglect from someone else are seen very ambivalent like this throughout adulthood. There is a strong feeling that the mother had a responsibility to protect one from that predator. & truthfully they did. This does create intense anger & a focus on the bad. This is not astonishing at all. It’s completely normal for one who has survived a dysfunctional & abusive environment. Victoria was very suffocated & not given any room that all children & teens need to grow & test boundaries.
