A "perfect" camera and lens for wildlife and hiking in the nature has got to be compact and light weight, so I have the Sony A7 RV and Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports. It is very nice to have 60 megapixels, even in APSC mode you still have 26 megapixels.

I have an R5 that I use with various lenses for landscape photography, primarily with a Tamron ef 35-150mm f/2.8-4 and Canon 16-35mm f/4L with ef-rf adaptor, and sometimes with my Canon RF 100-500L. I bought an r7 primarily as a lightweight travel camera setup with the rf-s 10-18mm & 18-150mm kit lenses, and RF 100-400mm small telephoto. I also use the r7 with the 100-500L for an effective 160-800mm wildlife and birding setup thanks to the r7's 1.6x crop factor. Along with a couple of other prime lenses, I find this combo covers all bases for me.

What an enjoyable video! I got into bird photography about two years ago. I'm currently shooting an R7 with your favorite 100-500 L lens. I also have a 1.4 converter that I use occasionally. I have pre-ordered an R5 Mk II (arriving this coming week with fingers crossed). Im hoping that the R5 camera's various features offset the shorter reach factor. Your photography is simply outstanding, and I look forward to enjoying your other videos in the future. Many thanks!

Hi Jimmy, great video, I have the R3 and R5 and my main go to lens is my Canon 600mm F4 MK2 I absolutely love this lens, but to say it is a pain in the back side for travel or hiking is an under statement, like you I have the RF100-500 and absolutely love this lens, but here in the UK when shooting small birds it's just too short, I have used the 1.4 RF Extender and it works well, but I treated myself the the new RF200-800 and since owning this lens I now use it over the RF100-500 when hiking or can't be bothered to take the big prime, in good light this lens is amazing for the money.

@@JimmyBreitenstein Thanks for the reply Jimmy, the RF200-800 is what it is, in good light it's sharp and can be very sharp, but it also like other big zooms suffer from heat haze, and I think a lot of people who say this lens is not sharp is getting confused with heat haze, I think for your Alaska trip this lens would be awesome it's a lot of reach for something quite light and inexpensive. Talking of Alaska I am ready for your videos as usual 🙂

I haven’t had the opportunity to use an RF lens yet, but I am very happy with my Canon R5 paired with my Sigma EF 150-600mm C lens. I bought the Sigma new for <1k, so for the price I’m quite happy. I’m afraid to try the Canon RF 100-500mm, I might like it, and it costs quite a bit more. I would like to try the new Canon RF 800mm when I can save enough to afford it.
@JimmyBreitenstein

That sounds like a really good camera and lens combo. Have you had any issues with the lens lagging on the R5? I used to use the Tamron 150-600mm G2 on the R5 and in the end I just had so many issues with it talking to the R5 through the adapter. Hence why I got the Canon 100-500. I'm just curious if you've experienced the same thing with the sigma?
@jeffolson4731

I had the same set up you have. You are right, you will love the RF 100-500 if you give it a try. Some people will tell you 500mm is too short, it isn't. Those same people will tell you f7.1 is awful and f6.3 is wonderful but won't be able to explain why 1/3 of stop makes any difference at all. The Sigma EF 150-600mm C is a great lens and sells for a great price.

@@JimmyBreitenstein It will search sometimes, especially on a small bird in flight against a featureless sky, but I’d think that is fairly common. This can be minimized by using the focus limiting switch. I think that catching Cliff Swallows in flight is probably difficult with any lens (I have managed to get a few shots). I’ve seen videos where other people have had issues of focus searching, but overall it hasn’t really been an issue on mine. I do have the Sigma cradle and have made a couple adjustments, though offhand I can’t remember which settings I tweaked. Maybe I just got a good one.
@jimgsewell
@jimgsewell 8 күн бұрын
@@jeffolson4731 I’m sure you are right, it’s just tough to spend another $2800 for 100mm less reach and 1/3 less stops of light. If my lens missed focus often, it would be a different story, but that really isn’t the case. With my 5DMIV, I would miss focus on a bird’s eye fairly often, but the R5’s eye-focus has turned that around. On the other hand, I do have a few red ringed lenses, but I’ve never had a white lens. Owning a white lens with a red ring would feed my ego, so that would be nice. I’m sure it is a fantastic lens and probably hits focus quicker than my setup. Maybe one day I’ll give it a try.

Very good video again Jimmy. I went through almost the same process when I decided which way I was going to go. I was shooting all Nikon DSLR when I decided to go to mirrorless. I have loved my Nikon gear so that is what I stayed with and also because Nikon has probably the best selection of wildlife lenses that are available now. I was lucky enough to find an almost brand new used Nikon d9 and a 400 f4.5. From there I added a 800mm PF and a 180-600mm zoom lens as well. I added a 24-120mm and a 70-200 f2.8 so now I am pretty well covered for anything I want to shoot. Nikon has come out with some prime lenses that are very light and are a reasonable price, still expensive but no where the cost of the exotic prime lenses. It is great to see you back and and I hope your Alaskan Bear trips went very well and I am really looking forward to the videos from your trip. We are getting close to the salmon in our rivers so I will be heading off soon to photograph the Black Bears. Recently a photographer on our Vancouver Island photographed a Sow Grizzly Bear with 2 cubs, this is the first time that this has ever happened. Fortunately she is keeping the location to herself. There has on occasion young male Grizzleys seen on the island but this is the first time a female with cubs has been seen. Mostly the young males swim to the island from the B.C. mainland and usually return but the experts are saying that the cubs are much to young and small to make the swim. Hopefully this will be the start of a Grizzly population on our Island. Good shooting and have a great week.

Thanks a bunch, Keith! Nikon really does have an impressive line up of lenses for wildlife. I did want to ask you how you've been liking using the 180-600mm? You mentioned earlier in the year that you usually stick to prime lenses but that you had gotten that zoom, just wondering how you're liking it vs your primes? The bear workshops went wonderfully this year, I couldn't have wished for better results and experiences. I'm excited to see what you get with the black bears out there this year. That would be neat if you managed to get some grizzlies as well 😁

@@JimmyBreitenstein I love the 180-600, it seems to be my go to lens right now, it is not quite as sharp as my primes but it is so versatile and it is fairly light and easy to carry around. This year I hope to do some video of the Black Bears and that will be my go to lens for video. I got a Nikon Z6ii for a backup camera but it will be mostly my video camera, the video files from that camera are really good. It is not great for quick action photos but great for stationary subjects.

@@keithmacdonald4805 That's great to hear. I'm glad you're liking the zoom, they really are so convenient and versatile. Thanks for the input, I've been quite curious about this the last couple of months.

Unfortunately, price dictates my choice of camera gear and why I am stuck in the dark ages with my Canon 7D mkii and my 11-year 400mm prime! The sound of that mirror slap does give me away, but with my non epileptic seizures I am not sure I could use a mirrorless camera. My husband tried out a mirrorless Sony years ago and didn't like the view finder. He let me try it and it made me feel a bit glitchy. I wonder if electronic viewfinders have improved since then. Hope the lens was insured! Good to see you again!
@JimmyBreitenstein
@JimmyBreitenstein 8 күн бұрын
Thanks Julie. I totally get what you're saying in regards to camera costs. The lens was insured, but in the long run wasn't worth the premium increase, so I pulled from some savings I was keeping for a different lens 🥴 I used to use a Sony with an electronic viewfinder and it was pretty rough. I do feel that the technology has come a long way and is pretty flawless at this point. Just my experience.

That's an interesting question, thank you for the video. My old EF 100-400mm serves me very well until today. I added a couple of extenders for more reach. I'm still using an EOS R (first model), which is slow in frames per second. I've been considering the R5 for the eye-AF capability and also speed. Also, I do enjoy filming wildlife in slow motion video. But I can't decide between the R5, R5 ii (might be overkill) or even keeping my current gear. Although my camera is limited in features, I think I improved myself as a photographer. In most cases, I the most difficult thing is finding the right combination of subject, light background, and story. As a hobbyist, I don't care if I miss a shot. Anyway, I know that I will upgrade at some point, but I'm just waiting to be sure about what might really be missing in my gear that would represent a great improvement in the results.
@JimmyBreitenstein
@JimmyBreitenstein 8 күн бұрын
Sounds like a pretty good setup you currently have honestly. R5's will definitely be dropping a lot in price with the mark ii being released, so that could be a good option. I’m a noob when it comes to hiking but have learned a ton. I know what gear I need to buy for different weather conditions, now I’m learning about dehydrating my own meals. I plan on having each meal in each meal bag weighed out, calories counted, and protein counted. For spaghetti, I would include everything in the meal bag, including seasoning and everything except for olive oil. I would use small individual resealable reusable Mylar bags to have olive oil in and peanut butter.
