Again another great video with some excellent tips on how to find GGO. I find that those tips work well for most Owls especially Great Horned and Barred Owls. We don't have GGO in our area but this time of the year is Short eared Owls and I have been working on them for the last couple of weeks. Thanks again for the great tips and have a great week and successful shooting!!

Thank you Keith! Yeah, I've found that many of the owl-finding tactics that I use work well with a variety of species, which makes things convenient when out in the field. Short Eared Owls are so fun, I hope you get some good stuff! We get them more around here in the spring and I can't wait to photograph them again. Best of luck my friend!

All those tips have me thinking of areas where I have heard Barred Owls calling in the spring evenings. Perhaps I should hike more in those areas to try to find them. When my son was little, we had the rare opportunity to photograph a Snowy Owl maybe I should dig those photos out and do a story time episode. I don't know when there will be another eruption of Snowy Owls. Looking forward to part 2!
@JimmyBreitensteinКүн бұрын
Thank you Julie! The great thing is, these tactics work really well on Barred Owls as well, I hope you find them! Wow, how cool would that be!? I've still never seen a Snowy, but have always dreamed of it 😁

Out for a hike the other day, looked up and saw to bright yellow orbs at ground level. Looked closer and a very well camouflaged Great Grey appeared. It was awesome. Now is Snowy Owl searching time - some seen here in central Alberta already.

I think the first question for finding a new lens or camera is "what do you already own?", especially as it relates to interoperability with existing gear. Most of my wildlife shooting is R7 with 100-400 and I'm looking forward to getting the 100-500 (the 100-400 is amazing for the remote stuff we do, the 100-500 is still much lighter and smaller than a lot of the other options like 200-600 lenses in other brands). One thing I'm ready for on day 1 of 100-500... if you back off the zoom to 472mm you get to use F6.3.
@gregmonforton41038 күн бұрын
Lenses will be a settled issue for me: RF 24-105 F4 and RF 100-500... it's the camera combos that are vexing me! I have the R7 and R8 and I love leaving the two lenses on their cameras but would it be better to sell both bodies and get an R5, or R6III when it comes out, or sell the R7 for the rumoured R7II, or dig for gold and get an R5II, and where does the 1.4x TC fit in, etc. etc. etc. But taking a "lens first" approach is helpful.

Great tips! I think the order of difficulty depends slightly on your kit. Due to my camera's autofocus not working well lately, i find the action shots and bird in flight shots more difficult now, when compared to multiple subject shots. (I can find the flying bird quickly, but the camera pulls focus off and then i find myself cursing at the camera.) Adding reflection, foggy breath, sunset would be the best way to enhance the shot, but rarely do these conditions really coexist with a good subject. Bird in flight in front of a distant rainbow was what i tried today, but i failed. Got only the rainbow. Your list seems quite exhaustive to be honest. In addition, I have tried fluorescence photography at night, but I got nothing good. It seems only colars underwater are good for that, not typical subjects. Also, a thought of night flash-photography of flying bats in front of noctilucent clouds has crossed my mind, but it seems very difficult indeed needing some sort of fancy triggering mechanism. Same with lightning and animal subjects...
@JimmyBreitenstein8 күн бұрын
Thanks so much, Ott. You bring up a really good point that the gear you have and how well it's functioning can really inhibit certain types of images. That rainbow shot sounds really cool, you may not have gotten it today, but at least you tried. You definitely wouldn't have had you just decided to stay in 😏 I've gotten some video of some birds in front of a rainbow, still no really good pictures though. I really admire that you have a list of such specific images that you'd like to get. I've started to do that more and more and love the added challenge of seeking out those shots. Thanks so much for the feedback, I really value your input and insight.

Lots of great tips again Jimmy, I have basically followed the same route in my wildlife photography. Lately my favorite is to photograph birds in flight and trying to capture some action from my subjects. I have also started to try to learn some good video techniques and also how to edit my videos. I don't plan on starting a KZbin channel but would like to have some videos to share with family and friends. Thanks again for sharing your excellent tips and have a wonderful week!!

Thank you very much, Keith! The action shots are so much fun and I personally find they give me the best all around practice. Video is a whole other animal and I haven't forgotten your request for tips on video editing and such. I'm finishing up one video this week about videography tips and should have it out in a month or so and hope that it helps. Thanks for everything, always appreciate it!

Hi, it's a long time you have posted this video, thanks for it! One exercise for me is to permanently search for beautiful backgrounds that would have allowed me to take a beautiful wildlife picture if only... some wildlife would have been here! That allows to be better position myself when an opportunity is here.

Thanks so much for watching and for the tip! That's a great exercise and habit to get into. It's always so nice when you already have a background in mind when that animal finally arrives. Thanks again!

Jimmy, any thoughts on doing a muskox trip in snow season?
@JimmyBreitenstein8 күн бұрын
Hey Tim! Yeah, I've definitely got it on the trip radar, I just need to figure out some of the logistics. Much of this area is virtually inaccessible in the winter and daylight only lasts a few hours. Once I figure out those facets, you can bet I'll have it on the calendar! I'm also considering some other locations that get a tad more light in the winter. Things to think about 🤔

Stunning images of the Musk Oxen. They rewarded your hard graft with some amazing photo opportunities and such a wonderful setting to see them in. The fox you filmed looked in beautiful condition, fabulous white tag to his brush too. The red foxes here in Wales can show quite a bit of variation in colour and a lot of them won't have the white tip to the brush but that little fella was pretty much a picture perfect specimen. All the best from here in Wales.

Thank you, Robert, always appreciated! Yes, I was very pleased with all the photo opportunities I had out there. I was a bit worried at first when I couldn't find any Muskox the first day, but things turned out incredibly well! That Fox was one of the most beautiful individuals I've ever seen. Like you said, just a perfect specimen. I was impressed with just how clean and neat it looked, no raggedy fur or anything! Thanks again my friend, have a wonderful week.

@JimmyBreitenstein15 күн бұрын
Do what works best for you. I make a lot of things myself, I always have, so that just comes naturally for me and was easiest. If it's too much of a headache for you, it may be worth buying one.

@ what are all the exact materials for building one pls help me I’m begging you man
@JimmyBreitenstein14 күн бұрын
@dorianetcetera2264 Honestly, I went to the hardware store and got what was available. Plywood outer layer with rigid foam inside and a resin coat to keep the water out. I don't have a list of exact materials because I just purchased what they had at the time. Don't overcomplicate it, you just need some sort of waterproof base with essentially a tent that sits on top.

Incredible trip and super high quality videos! These colors and wildlife look so good - i have typically thought of tundra being a windy sbowy desolate place with nothing to see but this looks just so stunning. Summer tundra rules. Should there be lemmings, weasels, weasels, snowy owls, wolverines and a whole lot of strange wader birds also there? Did you see signs of more species to follow up on next year? 3:08 looks a bit off the horizon to my eye - how do you make sure that the photos are level. Good thinking with the large bear (i had to put 1080p video to even see it) - without the good fish supply the grizzly might get some ideas. Thanks again for taking us along!!
@JimmyBreitenstein14 күн бұрын
Thanks so much, Ott! It was such an amazing trip. The tundra can definitely be extremely bad tempered as far as weather goes. I really had it quite nice while I was out there, but I know the wind can just be insane out there. Yeah, there is a lot of wildlife out there that I never saw or saw signs of. That's why I should have planned a longer trip to have more time to scout and explore. Next time I head up there, it'll be for quite a bit longer. I did see wolf tracks, I would love to see some of those! I use the level on the camera LCD and viewfinder to make sure things are all good. They were on a hill in that image, so they may seem a bit crooked 🤷♂️ Thanks so much for watching and your support, I always appreciate it!
