INSTEAD of canceling the conference championship, #1 Go to 10 Conference Games, #2 move the Rivalry Games up to Week 11, #3 make Week 12 (the last week of the season) a FLEX SCHEDULE WEEK. The conferences will have #1 vs. #2 (conference championship) and #3 vs. #4 Team in the Conference, #5 vs. #6, #7 vs. #8, #9 vs. #10……..all the way to the bottom. #4 Modify the Playoff Selection by adding the old BCS Computer Score starting week 4 (released each week as a WEEKLY REFERENCE), and the selection committee provides the actual rankings starting week 7 (BCS Score continues to be released as only a reference. #5 Group of 5 gets their highest ranked Conference Championship in the Playoff. #6. Top 11 or 12 (depending on whether Group of 5 is in the Top 12 or not) Teams get Playoff Bids and are seated by their Rankings #7. I want to preface this comment with the context that this is not an argument for Bama being in the playoffs. They had no business being in any tournament that would crown a champion. But I wanted to call out where I think the difference in perspectives is coming in, as I think it may provide some clarity on both sides of the argument I think the thing I keep hearing from this podcast vs other media (i.e. Herbstreit, Pate, and some others) is this podcast seems to focus a lot on a teams losses, and less on your wins, whereas others seem to do the inverse. The philosophy I gather from this group seems to be more concerned with who is DESERVING of a shot to win the title. And you (the Cover3 crew) use losses as your primary measuring stick to determine who meets that benchmark. Which is a fine enough point of view anyone can have. It's clean, and can remove some of the bias and human error element from the selection system. And based on that criteria, SMU absolutely deserved a shot more than Bama did. And on paper, it makes sense. Every team in the country is capable of losing any given weekend, and the teams who kept their crap together and didn't drop a game (or at least as many as others) have an argument that they deserve a shot to prove they can keep doing it. And I largely agree here that some benefit of the doubt can be earned by winning enough, even if against perceived inferior competition. Herbstreit and others seem to be looking at wins like Bama over UGA as proof of concept that teams like Bama are CAPABLE of winning against elite competition. Whereas teams like Indiana and SMU had a shot against higher levels of competition and failed their tests. And as some others have pointed out (and even you guys have pointed out by highlighting that blowouts were also commonplace in the 4 team playoff) there are very rarely even 4 elite teams in college football (i.e. teams capable of winning a title). So the gripe from some like Herbstreit is that, yes, they would like to see the teams capable of winning a title get a shot at a title. They are of the opinion that Indiana, Boise, Tennessee, and probably ASU have no real shot at beating someone like Ohio State, Texas, Georgia or Oregon for the national title, especially not when they have to play multiple games against the likes of those teams to get there (and I think is a reasonable assumption based on the way the games played out). Bama, Ole Miss, SCAR had shown that they were capable of winning against teams like that. SCAR beat the ACC Champion just 3 weeks ago. Ole Miss and Bama beat the SEC champion. That is proof that they are capable of beating "playoff caliber" teams, and (in the eyes of some), means they deserve a shot against those teams to win the championship. I'm not sure which of the philosophies subscribe to more. Selfishly, I want to see good games, so I like the idea of putting "better" teams in over "more deserving" but I agree that seems unfair. And I do think fairness should be considered, if only from a fan investment standpoint. But I do think it is a mistake to put so much emphasis on wins and losses, as I believe that no two wins are created equal in college football. Bama beating UGA and Indiana beating FIU are both only one win, but only a fool would say those two wins mean the same thing. I also think the timing of games needs to be a bigger consideration. I think dismissing Kirk's point is a mistake, as I think there is merit to the idea that who you beat is a strong indicator of your capability as a team. Additionally, when you play multiple of those types of games against high caliber teams, there is a taxing effect on your team, mentally and physically, that can make it exponentially more difficult to win against other teams you are "better than" and would beat easily otherwise. So I think additionally leeway needs to be granted there. But I also think Strength of Schedule, while it should a very strong consideration in candidate selection, should only take you so far. Losing to clearly inferior teams repeatedly can't be rewarded just because you managed to put it all together once or twice. In short, your team clearly deserved to be in more than that other team, and whoever says otherwise is clearly bias and hates college football

Nikon U better win a title this year or next year, because NIKE is hemorrhaging money. They lost $ 28 billion in one day this past June, and their stock is tanking. A couple of years ago it was worth $128 a share, now, about $76 a share, and is still dropping. Just like KODAK or SEARS, once big brands start to decline like NIKE is, it’s very hard for them to recover their former glory, and it’s only a matter of time till the shareholders start saying we can’t continue to fund Phils pet project at his alma mater when we’re losing $$$$$.

Late to this but complaining about the first round is ridiculous. How is this past weekend any different than wild card weekend most NFL seasons? Home team torches the wild card team and they move on to division round, which is usually closer. By the way,, this year Cincy is likely not making the playoffs nor Miami while Houston is in as will likely Denver. Not that Cincy or Miami are all that great but one could argue that those two teams have a better shot at winning it all than the two that are in and are both better teams. Play this 12 team format enough times and the year wll come round for the sweet hert underdog that makes it to the final and wins or loses, wouldn't really matter and then everyone will be lauding how great the playoff format is and how the underdog would not have gotten in but for...

That's why you have the spectacle of games starting at 11 o'clock in the morning and taking 4 hours to complete 60 minutes of play-it's all about the money. @39:13, Chip hits the nail on the head- the CFB community is obsessed with identifying the "best" team rather than who wins the championship at end of season. Nobody cares about crowning the best NFL team, just who won the Super Bowl, which is not necessarily the same. For CFB, it probably stems from old bowl days where there was a jumble of disparate bowls to crown a bunch of champs. That lead to a ton of bickering about who was tops. The thing is, that was part of its tribalistic charm. Now it's just soulless money grabs.

Can we stop acting like the Tennessee blowout is somehow a negative against the people complaining about the field. Tennessee also had a weak schedule for an SEC team. One of the problems with the format now is that quality of wins in losses < number of wins and losses. That is a real issue. Bud himself is a proponent of FSU leaving the ACC because of what reason? The bottom teams not carrying their weight in his own words. Well how is it fair that a team like Indiana beat up on those type of teams and make the playoff over a team with a much better SOR. There is no incentive right now for teams to schedule real opponents OOC. In fact, it’s a detriment to do so.
@bobpool66364 сағат бұрын
If Committee used SOS or SOR, how was Indiana a top 10 team? They beat 3 teams with a winning record? The Committee refused to use SOR or SOS other than lip service. THAT IS WHY THESE GAMES WERE DECIDED BY HALFTIME. The SEC MUST leave CFP! SEC Championship Playoff TONS NIL Bonus No Committee! The Committee FAILED!
