If you have the "first generation" machine, they "lift" out.. There is no spring actuated button to release the cam. In fact, Elna provided a "fork" to lift out the cams.

Can't see anything. It's out of focus and not enough zoom. And the bobbin was moving counter-clockwise, at least as we the viewers saw it. Much better tutorials for that here on youtube.

All Elna Supermatic machines use a rubber friction wheel - commonly called a pulley or drive pulley. You can see videos about this on YT. A friction wheel is an inefficient way to transfer driving power to a needle bar if you want to sew leather. This is a domestic machine. Please look at online or pdf manuals for this machine. They don't talk about leather. For a reason. Please go to online forums for leather workers and see their posts about using domestic machines. And if you make inquiries please state what kind of leather you intend to sew. Not all leather is the same.

I have been trying to put a zipper in a jacket which has about a 4 inch flap that goes over the zipper with snaps. The zipper has to go on the side with the flap and I have no idea how this can work. Just so frustrated. I am about ready to give up.

When stuck like that, you can always tuck in the those flappy foldy parts down where they should go, and then hand stitch them down in those places where you know you need to machine stitch. Then, when you flip the pieces over and inside out to stitch them on the machine, your hand stitching will hold those foldy flappy pieces in place where you need them to be. I hope that helps, it's stressful being stuck. But there's always a way.

I appreciate your information. Because I’m in a hurry to get on with my sewing in a world where there never seems to be enough time, I found the first third of your discourse where no actual instruction is happening unnecessarily time consuming. Otherwise, thanks.

I learned to sew as a child on my mother's Elna Supermatic and now that I sew myself (many years later), it was interesting to see the machine up close once again. My mom is 88 years old and still has her Elna even though she hasn't sewn for many years now. One of these days when I'm visiting her, I'll have to sit down and try out her machine again.

Image is too blurry to be of any use, too much elementary chatter (get to the point), and camera angle should be from the perspective of the sewer.

3-in-1 is TERRIBLE for sewing machines. This is the worst advice on the internet. Only sewing machine oil should be used. 3-in-1 will gum it up. The grinding sound is probably due to a flat spot on the friction drive pulley-- it goes flat when the machine sits unused.

Thank you for your videos! They helped convince me to go vintage. I am wondering, since there doesn't appear to be a "straight stitch" cam, does that mean that this machine sews a straight stitch WITHOUT any cams installed?

You are killing me. I am watching videos for ideas on how to repair the zippers in my 29 year old leather jacket. To see you tearing at that old leather I was cringing, later on you say you ripped the leather a bit. I assure you it matters, leather jackets become a part of a persons life journey. It is not like other pieces of clothing. My motorcycle jacket i am going to have to trust that someone will take as much care as possible in repairing the inside liner, zippers and repair the collar retaining as much or the original jacket as possible. " i probably shouldn't have sone that"'pulling at the delicate leather. Do you think??? How long does it take to tell yourself oops i was impatient working on what holds high value to you..lady, treat leather like something that you value. They trusted your ability. Take your adhd meds before talking such an important job, I am beside myself at your indifference.

Agreed, leather can be quite special. A jacket well-made and often worn, with only an occasional cleaning, can easily last a lifetime. A good leather only gets better with age often outliving its original wearer and going on to collect the memories of several lifetimes. Any coat offers protection from the elements to some extent I suppose but leather beats wind and with good layers underneath nothing can protect you better. Certain leather jackets also have the ability to make anyone who wears them feel like a rockstar. If the owner of the leather in this video valued his leather he likely would have understood that the importance of paying a little more to take it someone who does primarily leather work.

This was not a 'best effort'. Much more care should have been taken and that rip could easily have been avoided. Leather should also never be pinned, the pins leave permanent holes. I take great care when working with my Clients items.

@@angiedavey1195 Let me know where to mail my leather jacket too. Here in Florida I can not find a single tailor, seamstress, sewing, or leather shop that will breathe life back into my jacket. I do not mind if it has scars it will give it character. It is to the point now that the color has holes from the cracking one hole in the left elbow and the inside lining needs to be replaced. I want to change it to tiger print. No Idea what I am doing but am thinking follow the holes and do it by hand? I know that on a machine in my case there is no such thing as a straight line. The zippers I am expecting to be the most challenging. want the silver snaps and buttons to be changed to brass or copper

so, those little silver “buttons” are not actually buttons, they are button stops. They are used when switching back and forth between forward and reverse, to assist with keeping your stitch length uniform. The only functional button is the black one, which needs to be placed on “A” in order to use double cams (stretch and pattern stitches that use automatic reverse stitching). To move the button away from “A” and back to normal sewing, you need to depress it. It can be turned clockwise (lengthens stitch) or counter clockwise (shortens stitch) to minimize distortion in pattern stitches.
